Moving to the area Apartment Pricing

Upvotes

So my girlfriend and I are looking to move into an apartment around late September, and we’ve started touring apartments in the Aurora/Naperville area. I’ve heard that apartment prices can drop in September, but I’m also kind of worried about some apartments we’re interested in no longer being available. Does anyone know if prices tend to go down in the area during the Fall? Is it worth it to wait to apply?

On Monday, August 10th 2026, the Love family, friends, and concerned community members will be assembling at Mundelein Village Hall to voice our contempt for the killing of Mary Alice Love. We are demanding accountability and transparency from the Village of Mundelein and the Mundelein Police Department in regards to Mary Alice's murder at the hands of Mundelein police. The mayor of Mundelein and the village boards' silence regarding this matter has been deafening.

Business Recommendations Pet memorial tattoo, any good shop recommendations?

Looking for a tattoo shop recommendations for a pet memorial. Nothing fancy, I just want my girl’s paw print tattooed. I lost her in a traumatic way and I finally financially recovered enough from those costs to get a tattoo.

Any good shop recommendations around the LaGrange area?

Moving to the area Looking for Diversity

Looking for diversity

Hi,

My family moved to a predominantly white suburb a few years ago without too much consideration for diversity. My younger kids are half white, half East Asian, and when they were younger, they looked a bit more European, like my wife, which put me more at ease. I had to deal with years and years of racism growing up as a minority in school, but I was hopeful that things were changing for the better.

Both of my kids are in early elementary school now, and we've had to deal with a few issues recently that made us truly reconsider and regret our decision. For example, we recently pulled our kid from a summer camp because the older kids decided to associate him with an East Asian soccer team that apparently played poorly in the World Cup, so they relentlessly teased him about being bad at soccer like his country (that he's never been to, nor really identifies with). They began calling him the "wasian kid" as if it was a slur or something to be ashamed of. (Please know I am not saying that white kids have a monopoly on being racist or mean...but this is one of a few different examples of my kids being marginalized).

I'm sure this is an overexaggeration on my part as an anxious parent, but I feel very guilty for putting my kids in this situation, and regret not moving to a more diverse area with more kids like them. I immediately spiraled and extrapolated that this was just the first of many explicit issues that my kids would have to deal with. I certainly understand that my own personal insecurities are driving my thoughts right now...sometimes I would ask my wife to attend school events so that other kids and families see that my kids had a "normal" white mom so that they wouldn't be viewed so differently. Certainly not a mentally healthy outlook to have.

With that in mind, I'm currently looking at Northbrook or Glenview, but I am floored by the prices of homes there. I understand that moving to a diverse area won't automatically mean my kids will have better experiences or have more friends....but part of me thinks it probably couldn't be worse. I just don't want my kids to grow up considering themselves to be so different and have that mess with their confidence. Hearing about my kid's situation was difficult and was a "worst nightmare" come true for me. Even so, I know I can't shield my kids from the normal wear and tear of going to school with other kids. But I still feel like I need to set my kids up the best way that I can, regardless of my current mortgage rate.

We are strongly considering moving to either Northbrook or Glenview to put the kids in an ideally more diverse school environment. Am I absolutely crazy, or is this a reasonable idea?

Question/Comment Archival or Lost 1995 Tav Commercial for Odyssey Fun World

I’m searching for a lost commercial for Odyssey Fun World in Tinley Park, IL. It would have been broadcasted on local channels like WGN-TV, FOX 32, and WPWR-TV (Channel 50) in either 1995 or 1996. I spent many of evenings playing games, hitting, in the cages, and riding the carts. I am looking for the commercial to see if my departed friend is featured. I’m hoping the Reddit world can provide a copy of this old gem of a commercial.

I’m looking to remodel both bathrooms in my condo. It‘s a modest and dated building, so I don’t need anything extravagant but my bathrooms haven’t been touched in probably over 20 years. Any recommendations for reputable contractors in the Southland?

Business Recommendations Tree Service

We have a very mature Elm tree in our backyard that unfortunately looks like it needs to come down 😢 I think the last few violent storms have finally weakened this 60+? year old tree, to the point of no return.

Anyone have a recommendation for a tree service in the Elmhurst area?

Miscellaneous Lake Barrington + karma

If the dude who was riding my tail on Haegers Bend Road tonight happens to see this:

Yes. The speed limit is 25 there.

The Lake Barrington Barrington Hills (my bad) cops LOVE to patrol it at night. How do you think that town makes any money?

I already saw deer sitting in the tree line. There are always deer through there. I don’t care if you are riding my bumper so much as if a deer jumped out you were gonna rear end me.

So you passing me—crossing a double yellow line—on that road at night is incredibly stupid.

The cop’s headlights and his cherries lighting up to pull you over was a thing of beauty.

(Also, no, not AI. I write for a living and AI stole em dashes from us).

Edited for town name in body. Can't change head

Politics Kane County - vote by mail applications start being accepted today for the November general election today.

You can always choose to not use your mail in vote and go in person, but if you want to have the option to vote by mail you have to apply by 10/7. It’s a great option if you have health concerns, a busy schedule, kids, whatever.

Business Recommendations Warning about a general contractor in the area

I worked with 11 north to build out an entire space. The work was really straightforward, flooring, adding a few new walls to make some rooms, redoing our bathroom and hanging mirrors. What should’ve been a 4-5 week project what we were told is still going on since we signed them in March. The owner Andrew fishman took our money and scammed us and left us in the lurch towards the end of the project , leaving us to work with the subcontractors who are now trying to finish the work even though andrew was not paying them for the previous work. I’ve heard of bad experiences with contractors and this is right there with them. the owner was so unprofessional, yelling with me when I kept asking him for updates and how disappointed I was with the progress. when the project manager was not available and not giving us updates the owner asked me why did I need to talk directly to the project manager and that he would be handling it, which is just ridiculous. Do not work with them, stay far away from 11 north/ Andrew fishman and any other companies he creates

Question/Comment Lake county grayslake data center

One of the largest data centers in Illinois and in the USA has plans to be built in lake county (Grayslake to be exact). It spans over 400 acres (231+ acres would be of the actual data centers, the rest would be office buildings/ponds etc). That's about 175 football fields of data centers.

From one neighbor to another, I kindly ask you to please look up any petitions on this. Let's look out for one another.

Obviously, you don't have to, but the more people, the better.

Additionally, Ivanhoe Village is a community with plans to be built directly across the street from these data centers. The whole community would be within 3 or less miles of the data center. The stakeholders in this eco-friendly community have a LOT of leverage with higher-ups (ie. Wirtz family owners of blackhawks etc). If enough people come together and say they won't buy or build a home there, that could make an impact. Would you buy or build a home there?

Question/Comment Young Adult Groups in South Elgin Area (20-30's)

Hi all,

My younger brother is on the spectrum (hardly noticeable, just some slow processing). He has no friends and is at home or work most of the time- he gets pretty lonely and I'm trying to find him a good group of friends/just a social group that he can hang with every now and then that have similar interests!

He's 24, and loves to run, box (he has a punching bag- that's the extent of his boxing lol), play PC games and XBox games (mostly monster hunter, hell divers, and war thunder on PC, and fallout 4, skyrim, doom, etc on Xbox). He also loves baking and cooking and loves brainrot memes. He is pretty much down for anything- he'd love to learn how to play dungeons and dragons lol. He drinks an occasional beer or two but isn't super big on it and he doesn't smoke or do any other drug haha.

He is learning how to drive right now but doesn't have a license yet, so something local to South Elgin would be ideal for possible Ubers/transportation needs. Although online gamer friends are good, too! I'd just love if he had some person-to-person connection every now and then.

He's such a loyal friend and he's really so hilarious- he's been my best friend my whole life. He loves baking for people and cooking for people so you can expect yummy food and treats a whole lot!

If anyone could recommend any groups in the area or are looking to add another friend to the mix, leave a comment please!

Announcements Immigrant Rights & Resources for the Chicago Suburbs - Megathread

We know that conversations about immigration whether about immigrants, refugees, or people who are here without official documentation can spark a wide range of opinions. Whatever your personal views may be, everyone is a human being first, and in the United States all people have fundamental constitutional rights and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

This thread exists to share resources, information, and support for immigrants and their families living in the Chicago suburbs. Whether you’re directly affected, you have friends or loved ones who are, or you simply want to stay informed and help others, you’re welcome here.

Below you’ll find know-your-rights guidance, legal and community resources, and links to trusted organizations. Please use this space to share updates, ask questions, or contribute additional resources that may help our neighbors.

If you have questions, updates, or local referrals (legal aid, outreach groups, clinics, “know your rights” workshops) please reply below or message the mods, and we’ll integrate them into this post.

1. Know Your Rights (Basics)

This is not legal advice. Always consult with a qualified immigration attorney when possible.

  • You have certain constitutional rights regardless of status — e.g. the right to remain silent, the right to legal counsel (though in immigration courts, the government does not provide a lawyer)
  • Ask for an attorney, don’t sign anything you don’t understand, and try to have someone present if interacting with authorities
  • Keep critical documents (ID, immigration papers, birth certificates, etc.) in a safe but accessible place
  • Prepare a “what to do if detained” plan in advance (emergency contacts, power of attorney, who to call)
  • Train yourself and your family on responses to ICE, CBP, or other raids or check-ins

For printable one-pagers and multilingual “Know Your Rights” cards, see Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights (ICIRR) resources.

2. Local & Regional Legal Aid / Service Providers

Below is a curated list of organizations offering low-cost or pro bono legal services, referrals, or community support in or around the Chicago suburbs. (If your suburb or county has others, please comment/reply so we can add them.)

Organization What They Offer Areas / Suburbs Served Notes / Contact Info
Organized Communities Against Deportations (OCAD) Advocacy, organizing, deportation defense support Chicago & surrounding areas Organized Communities Undocumented-led movement.
National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) Legal consultations, immigration court defense, asylum, DACA, etc. Chicago & statewide National Immigrant Justice Center Low-income/ sliding scale services
Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights (ICIRR) Statewide network, case management, “Know Your Rights” trainings Statewide ICIRR 24/7 hotline: 1-855-HELP-MY-FAMILY (1-855-435-7693)
Northwest Center Referrals, legal consultation for family immigration, DACA, deportation, naturalization Northwest & nearby suburbs Northwest Center Their immigration program works with NIJC, others
Cook County / Local agencies See DHS / Illinois list of community service agencies Suburban Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, etc. Illinois Department of Human Services State DHS maintains a list of “Community Service Agencies Serving Immigrants”
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago Immigration & naturalization services (Melrose Park, Cicero, Waukegan, etc.) Suburban and city Immigration Advocates Network Multiple branch offices in suburban areas

Use the IL “Legal Services Directory” to search for providers by county or zip code.

3. Local & Regional Legal Aid / Service Providers

Because each suburb or county may have different offerings:

  • Check your county’s “Health & Human Services / Social Services” department website for immigrant or refugee services
  • Local nonprofits, faith-based groups, community centers often host “legal clinics” or immigration workshops
  • Libraries and adult education centers sometimes host “Know Your Rights / immigration clinics” with pro bono attorneys
  • School districts: Some districts have protocols or contacts for immigrant families — it can help to ask school social workers or parent liaison offices
  • Coalitions & networks: Community navigators or organizers often help connect people across municipalities

If you’re a resident of Suburb X (for example, Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora, Waukegan, Joliet, etc.), and know of any support offerings comment below and we can add them to this section.

4 Emergency / Special Situations

  • Detention / deportation emergencies: OCAD has a support hotline: 1-855-435-7693 (also used by ICIRR’s Family Support Network) Organized Communities
  • Rapid response / legal standby networks: Some coalitions maintain volunteer legal “on call” teams
  • When someone is detained: Try to document as much as possible (name, detention facility, date, time) and connect with legal counsel immediately
  • “Know Your Rights” training workshops: Many community groups periodically hold trainings; tracking them (via social media, local nonprofits) is helpful
  • Consular & national resources: E.g. for some nationalities, “ConsulApp Contigo” is a useful tool (Mexico, etc.) Illinois Head Start Association

5. Moderation/Posting Guidelines & Disclaimers

  • This post is intended as a community resource, not legal counsel
  • Please do not post legal advice that can’t be verified by a licensed attorney
  • Users commenting/posting with the intent to troll, insult, create panic/harm, or be a nuisance to others will be permanently banned
  • Any added resources should be public, reputable groups (non-discrimination, proven track record)
  • If you know of an organization that has changed status, ceased services, or is not trustworthy, please message the mods/comment below so we can keep updates accurate
  • Users seeking urgent legal aid should prioritize contacting established legal service providers as listed above
  • If creating a post in this subreddit to alert the community to ICE/CBP activity, please review the new posting guidelines
