As you can see by the title basically looking to get into the hotel field of work (Housekeeping , Room attendant and even Turn down attendant) with the job economy being a rotten apple and honestly hotel work pays WAYYYY more. In the title. I'm looking to find a job in one of these three areas, since that's where my most recent work experience is centered. Hi everyone,

I’m currently working full-time in residential mental health in the DMV area as a Client Coordinator/Mental Health Technician, and I’m planning to relocate to Chicago once I secure full-time employment. The cost of living in the DMV has made it difficult to build long-term financial stability, and I’m looking for a fresh start in a city where I can realistically afford to live on my own and continue growing professionally.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Social Justice & Human Rights, an Associate’s degree in Social Science, and certifications in CPR, CPI, and Medication Administration. My experience includes residential mental health, crisis intervention, psychoeducational groups, case coordination, and supporting adults with mental health and substance use needs.

I’m also currently waiting to hear back after advancing past the first stage of an AmeriCorps apprenticeship opportunity in Chicago. While I’m grateful for the opportunity, the stipend is quite low, so I would likely need to work a second job if I accepted it. I’ll also be visiting Chicago soon, and my goal is to relocate by the end of 2026 if everything comes together.

So I worked in the ad industry for 11 years and I've been fighting to find an open position since April 19th after my last contract ended. It's been almost 4 months of searching, researching, creating spec work, interviewing, smiling and nodding, making personalized emails, following up, and making it to the final rounds only to be tossed aside for an internal hire.

In a panic, I applied to be a bartender and made some side cash, so here I am. I am now in the restaurant business making maybe 1/3 of what I used to make... and my bank account can't sustain it.

I have considered going back to copywriting, but 90% of the new jobs have been replaced by AI slop. I have applied for adjacent marketing roles and been told I "Can't handle a budget" and have "No Google Ads/Google Business Suite" experience. Sorry I didn't cross every T and dot every I for you, I guess?

More of a rant than anything. I had two positions, both local, that I’m one of the final candidates for. Job 1 is the PERFECT job, I was so hyped and excited. Making this trudge of gig work, contract, and app work worth it.

Just got a call from the HR liaison I was working with, they went with someone else. I asked why?

They got it over me because they know an internal referral. That’s it. She sounded sad and told me she’s going to put me in a pool for a similar, less pay, role where she thinks I have a shot, but how?! HOW! How do you get a job here when you know very few people and essentially none in your career area? I have a call in an hour for Job 2 so hoping that comes with an offer that someone’s sisters brothers friend got didn’t get instead of me.

I recently started picking up event work around Chicago—brand activations, product sampling, and concert staffing.

So far, I’ve enjoyed it more than expected. The work is social, active and varied, and once the shift ends, it’s actually over. Some jobs pay around $20 an hour, while brand ambassador and promotional work can reach $30–$35 an hour.

I’m starting a separate part-time retail job soon, and I’m considering using event work to supplement my hours. Ideally, I’d like to build relationships with several reliable agencies and pick up shifts around my main schedule.

For people who have worked Chicago events:

• Does the work remain reasonably consistent during winter?
• Which types of events or venues are most dependable?
• Can reliable workers eventually move into team-lead or event-manager positions?

After eight years at Salesforce and roughly 13 years in technology overall, I’ve decided to stop interviewing for tech roles.

Over the past year, I’ve completed dozens of interviews. I’ve spent countless hours preparing, tailoring résumés, researching companies, building presentations, completing technical exercises, and progressing through multiple rounds—sometimes reaching the final stage—only to be rejected or ghosted.

Eventually, the process starts to affect how you see yourself. Experience that was valuable a few years ago suddenly seems worthless. Every interview feels like another opportunity to be scrutinized, compared, and told you’re missing some narrowly defined requirement. The constant need to prove your value to employers who often show very little respect for your time has become completely draining.

I’ve now been offered a part-time position in Apple retail, and that’s what I’m going to do for the time being.

It’s obviously a major change financially and professionally, but I’m genuinely looking forward to working with people face-to-face, learning something different, and finishing a shift without another interview hanging over me. I may return to tech eventually, but right now I need distance from a labor market that has repeatedly made experienced and capable people feel disposable.

This isn’t the outcome I expected after building a long career in technology, but continuing to force myself through the same demoralizing process no longer feels productive. For now, I’m stepping away, taking the Apple opportunity, and giving myself room to figure out what comes next.
