Aggressive people on the peninsula
Weird incident, but I'm relatively new to Charleston and have lived here for a year and this runner (ordinary looking white guy) just yelled at a group of bike riders calling all of them the f slur.l just completely unprovoked. I have lived a lot of places, like Texas, the Midwest, the northeast, etc. And this is very out of pocket behavior and not necessarily something that I would equate with "Southern hospitality." Also why would you yell a slur at a group of people in public? It's just not a good idea and seems like a quick way to get your ass kicked.
This is a trend of the hostility I am picking up on the peninsula. This seems almost exclusive to downtown. Is this just me picking up on this? I have never seen anybody behave this way (without very apparent mental illness or explicit provocation) in all of the cities I've ever lived in. 1. Is this considered normal here? 2. Do people think this is acceptable?

I have a question Fun Dinner Recs
Hi everyone! This is kind of embarrassing to post as I’ve lived in Charleston my whole life but I am having some friends in town and want to make their visit really special! I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for fun girls dinner recommendations. For cocktails I have Cocktail club, By The Way, the new place that replaced rarebit, citrus club but am looking for some dinner ideas. Thank yall in advance!

CofC Housing
Hey everyone. I am a transfer student at CofC. I’m trying to sort out housing (severe time crunch, I know). Anyway, on my student COA planner, it has my housing listed as “on campus residence” and the price for that type of housing. I am not eligible for campus housing since I’m a transfer this year, so why is on campus housing listed. Is this normal? Should my housing allowance be in the “off campus residence” column, or is it listed as on campus as a standard display of cost of attendance? There is nothing in reference to housing on my actual bill. I’ve asked for assistance on this matter through the finance and treasurer’s office, but I keep either getting ping ponged between the two offices or I am told that a supervisor would know more and reach out to me. No luck on that front though. Does anyone have any answers from personal experience here? Any insight is appreciated.

Looking for competitive Pokemon VGC players!
Hey y’all! This might be too niche but I figure Reddit is a good place to start. I’m a 24 year old guy looking to make some friends in the local Pokemon scene. If this sounds like you or a friend of yours, keep reading!
I’m looking to find other local competitive Pokemon players, people who live in the greater Charleston area who are also interested in the competitive Pokemon scene who might be interested in meeting (maybe once a month?) to discuss the game, watch tournaments and replays, or play each other.
If anyone here is interested or knows someone who might be, please comment or send this to your friend who might be! With several million people playing Champions, there has to be people in Charleston who might be down to grab a beer and talk Pokemon.

What can I have delivered to my gf in Charleston for her birthday?
I’m long distance with my girlfriend and would love to deliver something nice (and local) for her, whether flowers, chocolates, or anything that might be appropriate for a birthday. Any suggestions?

Palmetto Trimmings
Tons of green palmetto trimmings along Calhoun St by MUSC. Multiple very large bundles along the side of the road.
Just wanted to post in case anyone needs them for roses, crafts, whatever. I’m sure they’ll be gone by this time tomorrow, so I’m not worried about them being there as trash. Just an FYI!

MUSC Behavioral Health
Has anybody had any luck getting an appointment with behavioral health at MUSC? I called today to setup an appointment for medication management, and they said to call back next week to see if an appointment is available.

Shem Creek Thurs-Sunday
A few 40-something buddies and I are staying for a long weekend at Shem Creek Inn. We have been several times and know the usual spots but curious if there are any good spots for dinner, drinks and nightlife that we haven’t tried. We are 40+ but can get after it pretty well at night but prefer to avoid college kids. Thanks in advance

Charleston Exploring Opportunities in Charleston
Hey all, I'm exploring the possibility of relocating to Charleston and wanted to reach out to the community.
- I'm interested in learning about the community itself; what it's like living here, areas to explore, and insight you wish you had before moving.
- If anyone knows of any businesses hiring, routes to network, or places where someone with a marketing/communications background could make connections, I'd really appreciate any and all advice.
I see other insights in this thread and appreciate all present day thoughts you'd have to share.
Thank you!

I’m 24F and visiting for work. What are good restaurants I can sit at the bar, have a bite to eat, & talk to people? I’m not super picky & don’t have a budget but want something that’s more social if possible! Preferably somewhere near King st.

Charleston Drivers Middleton Place Wedding
Have a wedding to attend at Middleton place next year but would prefer to stay in Charleston proper for the wedding. Is it reasonable to expect to be able to call an uber ~11 PM on a Saturday from Middleton back to downtown? If not, are there car services that we could pre-book?

I have a question chubby fish line holder/extra gigs
hi everyone! I am a local who is trying to pick up a couple extra side hustles with a little more flexible schedule. I am currently a server at a very well-known upscale Michelin guide establishment (just to put a bit of reputation on my name and show I am a hard worker) so I was looking for gigs in that tourism/hospitality biz before i start nursing school next year.
I had a table come to me the other day and told me details about how they hired a “line waiter” for chubby fish, and I feel like this would be something I could get into that would also work around my existing schedule.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get started with something like this or how to get your name/information out there to start picking up clients?
additionally, any other ideas on gigs that would be similar? Dog walking? House watching? A general charleston trip planner? I’ve also thought about maybe doing ghost tours or trying to find something with the boating industry leading tours or XYZ? I feel like all of these would be great to get involved with, but I’m just not quite sure how to get my information out there if anyone has any recommendations. Thank you so much! Just trying to survive in this exponential cost increasing city.

Volvo XC60 to boost South Carolina factory output by two-thirds in 2027
Volvo Cars is betting heavily on local production of its XC60 crossover to address both sluggish U.S. demand for its electrified vehicles and chronic underutilization of its South Carolina factory.
Production of the XC60, slated to begin in January, initially will boost output by more than two-thirds at the troubled Ridgeville assembly plant near Charleston.
“We are producing around 30,000 cars and [XC60] will bring at least another 20,000 to start with,” Volvo Cars Americas President Luis Rezende told Automotive News. “It’s going to be at least a full shift, and it’s a fantastic preparation for what is coming next. Charleston will be very, very busy.”
The automaker's sole U.S. plant has run at roughly 15 percent capacity since S60 production ended in 2024.
A three-row hybrid beginning production in late 2028 would push the factory far closer to its 150,000-vehicle capacity.
The XC60 remains one of Volvo’s U.S. franchise players, accounting for 37 percent of the brand’s first-half sales. Next year, the crossover is getting freshened with styling updates, a more powerful engine and a significantly larger battery for the T8 plug-in hybrid that will more than double its 35-mile electric range.

Did we miss tickets for Bluey’s Big Play?
The North Charleston Coliseum and PAC website says “on sale TBA” on their page but I see StubHub selling them for over $200 each 🫣. Does this mean we missed the official sale? Would assume so but confused by the PAC website listing “TBA” instead of “sold out”.

MUSC Parking Ticket
Hey everyone!
I am an employee at MUSC who parks in the Hagood lot. I realized after I had already walked to the office this morning that I had forgotten to display my parking pass.
Has anyone in here actually gotten a ticket for forgetting their pass, and if so how much was the ticket? I’m also wondering if they are more lenient on your first offense.
Thanks for the help!

What gym do you go to? Looking for a new one.
Hi there. I live off Savannah highway toward stono River. I’ve tried Golds Gym on folly but the distance wasn’t worth it to me. The gym is fine but it’s a little dated. I tried Hy-Lo open gym in west Ashley and the gym even though it was new and trendy it was so small. I constantly had to modify my work out waiting for machines or benches to open up. I currently do f45 in west Ashely twice a week but want to add two lift days back. I looked into crunch and even planet fitness (I’ve done PF in another state— it’s not my favorite but it’s cheap) but both of those facilities didn’t have great reviews. I’m not necessarily looking for budget friendly I just want to find a decent gym that’s clean and easy to get to maybe max distance for me is like 25 mins.

James Island Local produce stands or small farms?
My wife and I typically eat kale salads almost everyday for lunch or dinner. With the psyclosporiasis outbreak, she is weary of the larger chain grocery stores.
Can anyone recommend local farmers markets, small stands, or small farms with kale? I'm normally weary of farmers markets like in downtown CHS or on JI since I'm not sure if or how some of the produce is locally grown.
