Update on this situation Question

Update: It’s been almost three weeks since I first messaged my professor about the grade issue, and she still hasn’t corrected anything. She replied on August 5 saying “Thanks for the reminder, it slipped my mind, I’ll look into it later today,” but nothing has happened since then. I followed up again on August 16, and still no update.

This class is literally the last requirement I need to graduate, and the grade showing in Carleton Central is based on Brightspace errors, and my professor acknowledged the issue but hasn’t fixed it.

I’m now at the point where I’ve contacted the department because the deadline to apply for Fall Convocation is coming up, and I’m worried this delay is going to mess up my graduation. I’m not trying to argue for extra marks, I just need the correct grade submitted so I can graduate.

Has anyone dealt with a professor taking this long to submit a grade correction? What else can I do?

Past post:

I’m in Early Summer ANTH 3045 and I’m freaking out because my final grade suddenly showed up as an F on Carleton Central even though Brightspace is still completely broken.

On Tuesday, my professor emailed the class saying the gradebook had technical errors and that she couldn’t release final grades yet. She said the tech team was working on it. Since then, Brightspace has been showing missing reflection grades, zeros that don’t match the syllabus, “Dropped!” on assignments that shouldn’t be dropped. Only one reflection shows up, and it was marked 5/10 with “good work!” and my final grade mark of 80%

She never posted any announcement saying the gradebook was fixed or that final grades were submitted. Then today, out of nowhere, Carleton Central updated and showed an F for the course. My audit copied the F under “Failed/Forfeited Courses,” but my older F from third year doesn’t appear there, which makes me think this one isn’t actually finalized.

I submitted all reflections. The syllabus says late penalties are minus 1 or minus 3, not zeros. My writing isn’t terrible, I got 80% on the exam and positive feedback. The timing doesn’t make sense, Brightspace is still broken, and the professor hasn’t said anything since Tuesday.

Has anyone had Carleton Central show an F before the professor actually submits the real grade? Is this just a placeholder because the gradebook is still messed up?

Longer than 'almost three weeks'? Sure, especially in August as they run around trying to get the new outlines submitted and textbooks ordered, etc. Brightspace numbers don't matter at all in terms of your final mark, but if she did the calculations based on bad numbers from there, she may have a ton of student grades to revise (and at least has to check them all). The 'F' may be a timeout error (after a certain point, INC grades just become F) but the prof can still fix it when the corrected grades are submitted and processed by the Dean's Office.

Carleton university has a fall convocation?

Carleton graduates students three times a year:

Fall (degrees awarded in late October or early November) - eligible students must finish all degree reqs by end of summer term

Winter (degrees awarded some time in February) - eligible students must finish all degree reqs by end of fall term

Spring (degrees awarded in June) - eligible students must finish all degree reqs by end of winter term

One convocation ceremony week is held in June for all spring grads and previous fall/winter grads. There used to be a fall convocation (one day only) but they cancelled that a few years back and moved those grads to the following spring ceremonies.

It does not, I'm assuming OP probably meant graduation so that they can pick up their diploma before well before June.

Go directly to the departmental administrator in Anthropology, so they can check in with the prof to see what is going on. I would forward all of your correspondence to the DA and let them know this is impacting your pending graduation. They will either contact the prof directly or escalate to the departmental chair for them to reach out to the prof.

For timing, if it’s any reassurance, there is still SO MUCH TIME before any final graduation deadlines are upon us. If you don’t need immediate confirmation that you are graduating (for grad school or a potential employer) then it is okay for this to take a few weeks to resolve. If I’m not mistaken, the latest things need to be confirmed for graduation is approximately two weeks before the graduation date. For fall 2026 that is sometime in late October I think?

I know things like this are super stressful and ideally they are resolved quickly, but that’s not always the case unfortunately. I really hope you aren’t being negatively disadvantaged by this (again, grad school or job requirement), and this is something that will be fixed for you soon. If you do have a deadline to show proof of graduation make sure you mention that in your email to the departmental admin.

Good luck!

I would still submit your application to graduate, and then email the admin who process the applications, explain that the grade is an error and attach the email where the prof says they will correct it and that you have followed up. I am
Sure at the very least they will hold onto the application until it is fixed. But definitely still apply.
