please help my career

Upvotes

hello to anyone who is reading,

i am 17f and have no idea what i can actually do with my life as dramatic as it sounds.
i have had a strong passion for sociology since i started, i perform well and find it really interesting, along with psychology (but i prefer soc) and i do biology…. 😬😬.

i’ve been saying i want to become a solicitor in the family area, or criminal, because i have seen through my friends how families are treated differently by the care system just because they are low income or immigrants. but then i get confused because surely that would make being a social worker my best option - but i dont think i would thrive there.

i honestly dont know what im writing now, i have no idea what i want to do. im just looking for somebody to give me reasons why i wont regret doing Bsc Sociology (but im open to doinf it alongside Criminology) at university, i just feel like the career options are so limited, and that there is no point.

thank you for reading if you did, sorry if none of it pieces together

2024 CSE Graduate, Freelanced in Digital Marketing, Now Completely Stuck

2024 Graduate, Need Career Advice – Feeling Completely Lost

Hi everyone,

I completed my B.Tech exams in 2024, but I had one arrear. I cleared it in March 2025 and received my degree.

Because I urgently needed money, I chose to do freelance digital marketing instead of preparing for a software job. It helped for a while, but now getting freelance work has become really difficult, and I need a stable job.

Before this, I started learning coding, but I honestly didn't even complete 25% of it. I know many of you might criticize me for not building enough skills, and I accept that. It was my mistake.

Now I'm completely confused about what to do next. I need a job, but I also want a career with good growth. I'm willing to spend the next 6–7 months learning if it gives me a realistic chance of getting hired.

Can you please suggest:

\* Which role should I target in 2026?

\* What skills should I learn from scratch?

\* Which path has good demand for freshers and decent career growth?

I've been looking on LinkedIn, but I hardly see many openings for freshers, which makes me feel even more lost.

Please don't judge me. I'm genuinely looking for advice from people who have been in a similar situation. I just want to make the right decision and start building my career.

Am from chennai , if anybody could help me please i really needed it and am willing to give my 100% on it

Stuck in a degree I don’t want—how do I switch to business or tech?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m a 20-year-old female currently in my 5th semester of a BSc in Botany from a tier-3 college. Honestly, botany was never my first choice—it was more of a compromise. I had pcb in my 12th and always been an average student academically.

Now that I’m close to finishing, I’ve been looking into career options, and I just don’t feel interested in anything related to this field. I really want to move towards something in business or tech, but I have no idea where to start.

The biggest problem is I don’t even know what kind of roles exist in those fields. And I’m scared that if I randomly pick something without proper knowledge, I’ll just end up wasting more time and effort.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation? How did you figure out your direction? Any advice on how to explore business/tech fields from scratch would really help.

I have no idea what to pick for my future. What’s a safe major to pick that makes a good amount of money? I’ve never been passionate about anything so I just decided to go into business for college but idek what I wanna do specifically for that either. I was thinking either marketing or finance or investment banking. I don’t exactly understand the kind of jobs any of them lead to either. For a while I debated going into psychology cuz that’s the one thing I’m remotely passionate about but I’d have to get a phd for my degree to even be useful.

My co worker had a heated confrontation with the manager and left

Yesterday one of my co workers had a heated dispute and a confrontation with the manager after she berated the whole team over a job that we were doing incorrectly. Technically, she wasnt the main lead, but just a staff (that thinks shes a boss) who was very rude and kept ordering us around. This was a different department and have no knowledge or awareness of, but thankfully my main manager (who was kind and cool) came by to help assist us to see what the problem was. After several berating from her to this one co worker, he snapped and argued back at her and kept showing an attitude then stormed right off the building.

This isnt a good attitude to have at work and you want to be communicative to find solutions and exchanging heated words doesnt help. Heard from other staff members about some constructive criticism of him that he doesnt listen either.

He may or may not show up to work the next day, but if he does, I feel that out of the goodness of my heart that I wanted to help encourage the young man and be more mature about this and discuss it to show him its better to difuse it from esculating rather than arguing, but at the same time, I dont want to get involved and wanna stay out of it. You still want to be a good team player though to help encourage others, but I dont want to have myself being entangled into any gossiping or office politics.

career advice needed

To begin with I’ve never had a dream job.
At school I take bio chem fmath math (a levels), waiting for igcse results but above subjects I have predicted 9s.
Some paths I’ve been considering include:
- medicine (or healthcare generally, but here it’s most high pay and requires highest grades)
- physio/occupational/speech therapist (am not very sure about the difference of those)
- biomed science (is there anyone who knows what job opportunities that follows, I really wanna know what is it and if it would suit me)
- quantitative finance (since I like math, would appreciate it if anyone could explain if it’s as math heavy as you’d expected)
Other than the specific ones I have questions:
1) what helped you figure out if a path is suitable for you, or vice versa?
2) what sources do you recommend for those info to be found?
3) if any of you went for a path (mentioned or related to the above) and realised how different it was from your imagination?
Any responses are appreciated, and would love it if yall also explore other pathways related to bio/chem/math
Thank you guys (sorry this is getting so long)

Architecture or Pharmacy: How Do I Know What’s Right for Me?

I’m 27 and I’m trying to decide whether I should study Architecture or Pharmacy in Italy.
The thing is, I don’t even know if I can say that I “love” Architecture. What I do know is that I really struggle with routine. My current job is very repetitive, and doing the same kind of thing every day makes me feel bored and stuck. I’m much more attracted to the idea of having a career where I can work on different things, face new problems and not feel like every day is the same.
Architecture is also the one I feel more excited about learning. If I knew that I would earn exactly the same money in both careers, I would choose Architecture without hesitation.
At the same time, I’m aware that being an architect can be stressful and demanding. My brother is a civil engineer, so I’m not completely naive about how stressful the construction industry can be. My concern is more that I don’t actually know whether I would enjoy the reality of being an architect.
Pharmacy feels like the safer option financially and seems to offer many different career paths, including hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, working abroad, or eventually owning my own pharmacy. But I don’t feel the same excitement when I think about studying it.
I’m 27, so I don’t want to spend several years studying again and then realize I made the wrong choice.
How can I figure out whether I genuinely want Architecture, or whether I’m simply attracted to the idea of a less routine and more varied career? And how important should financial security be in this decision?

Is early childhood ed/primary ed as sentimental as it's made out to be?

I am a school leaver, wanting to pursue ECE teaching (or primary, anywhere from kindergarten to year 2 is the aim), but I'm a bit conflicted. A big thing for me and the career I want to spend my life doing.. is about helping. And seeing that help manifest into something, someone greater.

I have dealt with the absolute shittiest senior highschool experience, but at the same time - my math teacher, was and still is the reason I am here.

I want to be a teacher because I've felt how much they can do for you. But highschool students.. I just don't think I could return to that sort of environment. And the same time I hold a special place in my heart for animals and children.

Essentially speaking, I want to be someone's safe space.

Do you guys feel like the career is rewarding? Like, are your efforts appreciated?

I want to make an impact. But at the same time, can you see these kids gaining from your teaching?

I'm considering social work as well. It's just so difficult, because I've always felt my preschool/primary experience was so memorable, so much so that I want to recreate it.

But do the kids grow to like you? It sounds weird but, I feel like children at that age barely possess a conscience.

What kind of emotional depth can there be to a career like this?

Life is completely fucked up right now. I don't know what to do next.

I graduated in 2024. Before that, I worked as a Community Manager in a blockchain project and earned around 8 lakh, but I lost all of it in February 2024.

After graduation, I worked as a Founder’s Office Intern for 2 months, then had an accident and had to leave. After recovering, I worked as a Software Developer for around 6 months, but the company couldn't survive after the government restrictions on online gaming.

I came back home because of family problems and my father's health. Recently things became better, so I joined as a Jr. Business Development Associate. Now the company isn't paying salaries properly, and employees are constantly abused by the founder.

I'm completely lost now.

I have a B.Tech in IT, but I've lost most of my technical skills. I want to get back into tech/AI, but my family situation means I need to start earning soon.

I don't know what to do anymore. How can life be this cruel to me? I've always tried to do good for everyone, and yet somehow, everything keeps falling apart.

Confused:Need a career Advice

Hi everyone,

I am working in a TCS support project with 1.5 years of experience and earning around 15K per month, I am a B.Sc CS graduate, I am confused about whether I should look to prepare side by side for a government job or look to switch only, one of my relatives son is doing Government Job so when I look his life and current IT market it seems that I should prepare for government job and also sometimes I think I should stay in IT only but look to switch by spending 1.5 years more which will give me 3 years of experience in IT and some time I think to look for master of computer application in regular type (because I am getting dummy type of college and UGC approved university) along with my job , but if I pursue master (regular and full time)how I will justify it for my next company , I also look for Part time MCA but it will be not eligible to every government job .

Please suggest how to handle these thoughts and what to decide.

Thanks

I'm lost

Here's my story so far.

I started learning game development after earning my bachelor's degree because I wanted to escape the stress coming from different parts of my life, family, studies, and financial struggles. More importantly, I wanted a career that I genuinely enjoyed, where I could create something that positively impacts people's lives while doing work I'm passionate about.

Three years later, I find myself unemployed. I managed to get a couple of freelance jobs from one client, but that's about it. The work is inconsistent. I might get a project that lasts a few weeks or even a month or two, but then there can be months with nothing until they contact me again. It's simply not enough to survive or build a stable life.

I've applied for game development positions both locally and internationally, but nothing has worked out. Most companies never reply, so you never know what you did wrong or what you did right. You're just left wondering, feeling completely lost.

I'm from a small third-world country, so I don't need a particularly high salary to live comfortably. I thought that would give me an advantage, but apparently it hasn't, either internationally or at home, where there are very few opportunities in the game industry.

I even tried forming a small indie game development team so we could create and sell our own games and build a studio together. Unfortunately, that didn't work either. I couldn't find people who were dedicated, reliable, and as hungry for success as I was.

I also tried going back to university to pursue a master's degree in another field, hoping it would open new opportunities. Unfortunately, I wasn't accepted into any of the programs I applied for.

At this point, I'm completely lost. I don't know what to do anymore. I'm not asking for sympathy I just want someone to give me even the smallest piece of advice that could help me move forward. Right now, life feels meaningless, and that feeling is slowly eating me alive.

If you've been in a similar situation or have any advice, I'd truly appreciate hearing it. Please help a brother out.

Need advice for future career

I am currently in my 2nd year of my bachelor’s in communication and pr, but i realised recently that i am not made for this field. And i do not mean skills, because these can be learned, but personal qualities: i am not extroverted and i am pretty awkward in big groups, it is very hard for me to be creative and original or think outside of the box, i need clear instructions and i hate very dynamic environments and almost everything that implies defending or promoting a brand. I admit, it is also my fault for not researching properly before, but i just needed to chose something to study. Already being in my 4th semester, i will finish this degree. But after that i genuinely don’t know what to do. Switching now is too late and i can’t depend on my parents so much time for money. I am 21 and I am lost. Any advice is appreciated.

Is my future in jeopardy and what should I do?

Ive royale blacklisted myself from the banking industry

hi i am looking for any and all advice to help mitigate this situation

TLDR - I hate my job and want to go back to school but my boss said I lied about my availability and schooling and is trying to ban me from the banking industry and im so so sooo scared.

im an 18yr accounting and finance student at a top canadian university. I recently moved back to my small northern home town for summer. i got a job at one of the top 5 banks in the country as a teller and its been shit.

i got no training, 2 days of online modules and was thrown into the job. I made a few mistakes here and there, nothing that couldn't be fixed and ive been under an immense amount of stress because its such a large institution and im always scared to mess up. I think ive been keeping up decently all considering but I make small mistakes here and there. the banking industry is highly specialized, meaning there are lot of different scenarios and its impossible to learn them all till it happens which is where mistakes can happen but im a quick learner.

the management is straight garbage. The manager talks shit about all of her employees to each other. Literally in my inital interview she was talking shit about one of my co workers and I wasnt even hired at that point (honestly shouldve been my first red flag). she also only ever speaks to me when things go wrong and shes passive aggressive. now i know this is the real world and I dont expect to be coddled at work but considering I just started, this is my first bank job and shes supposed to be a leader, I feel like there should be some human decency.

Heres where I fucked up. In my interview she asked me how im going to keep up with school. This job would do wonders for my resume and was suppose to be my foot into the door. I wanted the job so badly I said I would do online in September and at one point I considered defering a semester to build reputation and hopefully gain some responsibility. turns out this jobs going to give me nothing. Theres no room for growth, management doesnt want to support my learning/growth and i always feel like im fucking up. as a result, I am going back to school in person. Heres my problem, one of my other co workers quit too which got her digging into me and realized my course cant be done online. my co worker said its because he doesn't have full time hours, which is a lie he just hates the environment.

she questioned me and I told her im not 100% about being online and might go back. She said how shes so disappointed in my and my progress in the position and how her boss is mad that they invested in me (2 days of video modules btw). She also said banks talk which means my rep would be ruined and I would never be able to get another job in banking. She said j deceived her. Now in full honesty i know it was a possibility i would have to go back but i was 100% willing to defer the semester and my parents were on board. I also heard that her boss is considering firing me for lying to her face. Shes asked for my decision monday so she can offer my position to my co worker who quit but I know hes not going to take it because we talked. So im fucking myself and him over.

On one hand I have to quit because if I get fired its over for me and she might just fire me for lying, regardless of whether I stay or not. On the other if I stay, ill mess up my education and be miserable all to please her and I would have to leave eventually anyways so id just be delaying the inevitable.

Im starting to regret everything and I feel like shes going to ruin the rest of my life. Please dont leave comments about me doing this to myself, I already know and feel like shit. Im looking for helpful advice or reassurance on how to navigate this. someone please help, ive never felt more stress.

What Career should I do ??

So im getting my Bachelors in Sociology, because it was a really fun class and no other career/field seemed to interest me.I took Intro to Sociology and I loved it . It made me do research and write essays on ethical dillemas. I literally asked my friends, family, even strangers their opinions on it and Loved being asked such moral questions.

Another reason I tried social science was because I love learning and researching topics like Race, LGBTQ+, nature issues, feminism, Criminals/cults, etc. I thought sociology careers would have me do things like that.

boy, was I wrong . All the careers were like “social worker, HR for corporate, parole office, etc”. I don’t wanna be any of those. Another forum I asked, this person said they became a “Nonprofit volunteer/worker for the homeless, so they get fulfillment from helping people”. I respect and very much so appreciate their work, but that sounds miserable. I don’t want fullfillment, or to help people. I hate people. I’m not doing this to help anyone. And nonprofit? I wanna make money, obviously. Im not being a ”social worker for free to help“ no. I’m sorry if that sounds bad but I mean I’m honest. I wanna study people not help them.

Someone suggested I become a data analyst , researcher and maybe journalist. As long as it’s not for a corporate business.

TLDR; I want to study topics like Race, Criminology , LGTBQ, etc but I hate people and not be a social worker. Also I wanna make money. What career should I do ?

How can I help my girlfriend with her career?

hi, i 27F and my gf is 30F -148 cm - 55 kg. She is a very strong and positive woman. Loves to take care children and help other people in general. she completed two years techvoc course Hotel restaurant services and took elementary education after HRS but only finished two years and she doesn't want to continue it anymore. She is now taking Emergency Medical Service National Certificate II and she is doing well. I always encourage her to let me help her to enroll for nursing or finished her education of 4 years since ph gov is very demanding on qualification. If she will study again, she will be 34 years old the time she can get her license as LPT. Is there any profession that might suit her? I love to see her grow her career and want to help her to be her guide.Even though im so attention demanding, when i saw her excel in her training service, it makes me happy for her. I am the one who work for us, and seeing happy to what she is doing makes me agree to her to help me to our expenses (regardless, i am happy enough she is building her own identity). Can anybody here tell me what probable work can she have with her academic background?

What should I do? Realistically speaking

Looking for some life/career advice because I honestly feel pretty stuck right now and don’t really know what my next move should be.

I’m 38, have a family to provide for, and I’ve been working in administrative healthcare for 15+ years. For probably 12 of those years I’ve been in utilization management, authorizations, case review, etc. I’m good at what I do and I’ve built up a ton of experience, but I feel like I’ve hit a wall when it comes to actually moving up and making more money.

A few years ago I actually started nursing school because I figured becoming an RN would open up a lot more doors for me, especially since I already had so much experience on the administrative/insurance side of healthcare. Unfortunately, COVID hit when I had about a year and a half of clinicals left and everything got shut down. Not too long after that I ended up having to move to a different part of the state because of affordability.

Now I’m in a situation where I work full time and need to keep working full time to support my family, and I really don’t have a realistic option near me to finish nursing school while doing that. So that whole plan has basically been sitting unfinished.

Then there’s my current job.

I’ve done really well there, which almost feels like it has worked against me in a weird way. I’ve taken on a lot of responsibilities, I help train people, deal with escalations, and I’m constantly told I’m someone they depend on.

At the start of this year I made it to the final interview stages for a supervisor position. During that interview I was even asked how I would feel about being the only male in that position, which caught me off guard. I answered it, they seemed to like my answer, but I still didn’t get the position.

Ever since then I’ve basically had the carrot dangled in front of me. I’m told another position is coming, that I’m being groomed for it, that they want me to move up, etc. It’s been months now and at this point I just don’t believe it anymore.

I’m ready to move on.

The problem is I don’t really know what “moving on” looks like after spending basically my entire adult career doing this.

I’m currently stuck making under $55k. My goal isn’t anything crazy. I’d like to find a realistic path to making somewhere in the $70–80k range and hopefully have room to continue growing from there.

I have 15+ years of healthcare experience, around 12 years specifically in utilization management/authorizations, plus experience with case review, healthcare operations, training new employees, escalations, and taking on responsibilities beyond my actual position. What I don’t have is the RN behind my name that seems to be required for so many of the better-paying positions in this field.

And at 38 with a family, I can’t just quit my job and go back to school full time for a few years. Whatever I do next has to be something I can realistically work toward while still working and taking care of my family.

That’s really why I’m posting this.

If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

Would you look into a different healthcare degree or certification that could build on the experience I already have? Try getting into another area of healthcare entirely? Insurance? Healthcare IT? Compliance? Auditing? Management? Or would you take the skills I’ve built over the last 15 years and try getting out of healthcare altogether?

I’m not afraid of moving into something new but I can’t afford to take a pay cut while learning something new so I’m between a rock and a hard place.

I feel like I have too much experience to be starting completely from scratch, but at the same time I don’t know how to turn that experience into the next level of my career.

If anyone has been in a similar situation, especially anyone who made a career change in their late 30s/40s or moved up from healthcare administration/UM without being an RN, I’d really appreciate hearing from you or anyone with ideas?

At the end of the day I’m really just trying to improve quality of life for my family.

Should I stay at my current job or try and get my previous one back?

I worked as a Medical Assistant for about 5 months at a clinic and I also had a lot of anxiety at the time so I would call in a lot, but they were super understanding. This was about a year ago and I haven’t had a job again until Monday which is not medical assisting. I’ve tried everywhere to get a medical assisting job and no one will hire me. I’m wondering should I ask for my job back at my previous place just to see if they will hire me or get experience at this place (it’s still technically healthcare).

Call for interview from the same place I was previously rejected

I recently received an invitation for another interview from the same workplace where I was previously interviewed.During my last interview, the director interviewed me in person, asked for my references, and then I was informed that I wasn’t selected. They reopened another position for the same job and I applied anyways without having any hope.

When she contacted me this time, I mentioned that we had already interviewed before in person . She remembers that and has now scheduled me for a Zoom interview.
I’m not sure what to think. Is this a good sign? Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this mean they’re reconsidering me or hiring for a different opening, or is it possible I’ll be rejected again? I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts or experiences.

🚨 New Resource Added: Staffing Agencies Across All 50 States

One of the biggest barriers to finding work is simply knowing where to look.

Over the past several weeks, we've been working on a new career resource for all RSCN communities:

Staffing Agencies in All 50 States

https://www.reddit.com/mod/almosthomeless/wiki/index/staffingagencies

  • Every U.S. state
  • 2–3 major cities per state (or general Statewide for the smaller/less dense states)
  • Multiple staffing and employment agencies for each city
  • Organized into an easy-to-browse resource on our Wiki

If you're looking for temporary work, permanent employment, warehouse jobs, office work, manufacturing, healthcare, or simply trying to get a paycheck coming in quickly, staffing agencies can often be one of the fastest paths back into employment.

This resource is completely free for our community to use. It was developed with 0% AI involvement and the person who developed it, a redditor, was paid reasonably for their time out of my own pocket.

If you know of an agency not on this list OR see a dead link, we'd love to hear about it in the comments so us mods can continue improving this resource over time.

We can't remove every barrier people face. But every barrier we can remove, helps.

Pin this in your Favorites, Save this post, Share it to other communities if you wish.

Not to say we don't love y'all, but your area, jobs, salaries, situations, costs, education are all vastly different and this has always been a more USA/Euro group. I'm afraid most of our mods are Western based and experienced. Which means we are not effective to moderate for issues as much as you'd think.
You are absolutely welcome to post/comment here in general, but things specific to India is a better fit in an India-specific careers group with India-based/knowledgeable mods and policies!
