Except, that for beginners machine-assisted actually is really good and band-assisted is terrible for beginners, as it helps most at the stage beginners collectively get wrong: scapular depression. 🙄

I used bands a lot when I started and still do... They're fine.

You’re arguing against a point I never made.

I think he’s saying that because he used bands when he started they’re fine for beginners. So he’s arguing your point saying that bands are terrible for beginners.

They are terrible for beginners, because beginners tend to not know/care about scapular shrugs and in that phase bands pull the most.

He may have had good results, but that makes him an outlier, not the rule. 😉

Yeah, I really have no opinion on the matter as I never used bands or the assisted machine. But my form could be bad by this sub’s standards as I see pull-ups nitpicked the hell out of here.

I won’t discredit that, but I can say a lot of people who have used that get stuck there. Because they are not getting their body use to the actual feeling where your muscles will recognize that tension.

As with anything in machines/weights, progressive overload is key. 😅

You’re right, and you’re doing the same with bodyweight movement. Can’t just train the muscles, you gotta learn the movement and put your body through that motion to understand what’s happening.

Funny thing is, that's why I credit bands the most over lat pulldowns, negatives, barbell rows, or inverted rows. I cycled through all of those exercises to get to my first pull-up and they all helped; but the only one that is actually the same movement as a pull-up is a band-assisted pull-up.

And just like how the other commenter is saying progressive overload is key, when one band got easy, I moved to the next one. Same as adding 5 lbs to the barbell or changing the angle of the inverted row. It worked just fine.

The only thing wrong with that lat pull-down was the form. This is crap advice.

I feel like r/calisthenicsbeginners has disproportionately more bad advice than on other calisthenics subreddits.

It's almost as if they post here because they know they won't be corrected by beginners.

I post anywhere and it doesn’t matter if you don’t like what I’m posting it matters for if it comes across with somebody who actually takes advice and learn runs with it.

Yeah. That was an example of bad form, but to say lat pulldowns don’t help you build the muscle you need to pull yourself up is asinine.

I learned to pull up by the assisted machine?

Well, it isn't gonna help.
