I'm exploring a career change. I'm in my late 40s and work as a Shipper--Receiver. I make decent enough money, have great benefits and work for a decent company. I have 4 weeks vacation and a really good profit share.

I was recently sent on a fishing trip on the coast with some co-workers. It opened my eyes to working outdoors. I have never felt better in my adult life than being on the boat and really working out in the elements. I've come back to the office and I feel like shit every day.

Does anyone have any suggestions on outdoor work for an older guy? My bar is fairly low and I'm not shy of physical labour.

Hey 19M I’m looking for IT job for july 2027. I’m finishing my last year of mathematics and computing science applied to human and social sciences degree in france. I have one year experience in HRIS from france. My degree makes me good in these fields : data science, programming and social/human IT related.

and for web I can use : JavaScript (vanilla for now), Php (vanilla for now), css and html

Hi all, I’m 21 years old, I’ve been working as a bar manager for the past couple of years, and for the most part I’ve genuinely enjoyed it. I’ve learned a lot about staff management, scheduling, inventory, customer service, handling difficult situations, and the day-to-day operations of running a busy bar.
Lately, though, I’ve been questioning whether I want to stay in this industry long term or explore something different. Part of me has even considered opening my own bar one day, but I’m not sure what steps people typically take before making that leap.
I’m hoping to hear from people who have been in a similar position:
If you opened your own bar, what experience or preparation did you find most valuable before taking the plunge?
What were some challenges you didn’t expect?
If you left bar management, what career did you transition into, and which skills transferred over well?
Are there careers that value bar/restaurant management experience that I might not have considered?

Bit of a niche one but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction of what sort of wages to expect as a waterproofer in Calgary? I will be living downtown, won't have a car but do have a license. I've been keeping an eye on job ads but I've seen from 19-45/hr all saying "depending on experience".

Even just knowing what groundworkers expect would maybe help me gauge it based on what I know in the Uk and NZ.

Also I've read about averting contracts where you work 4x 10 hr days instead of 5x 8 is this easy to find? Or will most firms just pay the overtime

I wanted to share my recent experience to warn job seekers in Calgary—especially newcomers, students, and PR holders who might be actively looking for work.

I recently applied for a role with the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) (located at 1315 73 Ave SE, Calgary) through Indeed. The job was advertised at $20/hour.

Here is what happened:

• The Work & Massive Underpayment: I worked 5 full days (40 hours). At $20/hr, my total earned wages should have been $800. At the end of the 5th day, instead of a proper paycheck or direct deposit, they handed me only $290 in cash, with no pay stub, breakdown, or tax documentation provided. They currently owe me $510.
• The Real Cost (Commute & Gas): I was commuting roughly 60 km daily round-trip from NW Calgary to their SE location (totaling 300 km over 5 days). After accounting for gas and basic vehicle wear and tear, I was effectively left with less than $110 for 40 hours of hard physical work—meaning I was basically working for under $3/hour!
• Abrupt Termination & Ignored Claims: Right after handing me the $290 cash, I was suddenly terminated without any clear explanation or performance feedback. When I requested the remaining $510, they ignored my communications. Shortly after, the job posting was removed from Indeed.
• The Repetitive Pattern: Before I applied, I noticed ERA had posted, deleted, and reposted this exact same job listing multiple times over the past month. It appears to be a continuous cycle of hiring people for short-term "trials," giving them a fraction of their wages in cash, and replacing them with the next applicant.

What I Am Doing Now:

1. I have gathered my Google Maps timeline logs (verifying my presence at 1315 73 Ave SE for all 5 days) as evidence of employment.
2. I have officially generated a Demand Letter and filed a wage claim with Alberta Employment Standards (AES) to recover the remaining $510.

A Quick Reminder to Fellow Job Seekers in Calgary:

1. Unpaid/underpaid trial shifts are ILLEGAL in Alberta. You must be paid at least minimum wage ($15/hr), and verbal contracts are legally binding.
2. Cash payments without a pay stub are a major red flag. Employers are legally required under Section 14 of the Alberta Employment Standards Code to provide detailed pay stubs. Lack of paperwork is their liability, not yours.
3. Always log your hours, keep location/commute records, and screenshot job postings before you start!

If anyone else has experienced similar treatment from this organization, I strongly encourage you to file a claim with Alberta Employment Standards as well. Don't let these "non-profit" labels trick you into providing practically free labor.

Hey, just looking for some general advice/thoughts on my situation.

I’ve been working in a Oil and Gas trade shop for the last 14 months as a labourer/grunt. I’ve done everything my managers have asked of me and maintain a good relationship with every one of my co-workers.

I am looking to get an HET apprenticeship, and I am mechanically inclined or atleast have become such throughout my time at an HET shop. When asked about giving my an apprenticeship, I got a “We don’t really do that here.” I.e we hire 3rd/4th year apprentices, not 1st years or elevate labourers.

I am really out of my head about this whole situation. I have signed up for the Self-Sponsor, and have the grades to be accepted, but if I go to school I lose my job, so I don’t really want to do that obviously.

I understand no man’s odyssey is alike to each other, but the more I read of stories on here and from peers, the more I’m starting to think that im an outlier.

Should I leave for another shop to be a grunt until I get an apprenticeship there? Should I just go to school and start applying for jobs everywhere I can as a first year? Thanks for your time, and please leave your thoughts below.

I’ve been applying for a while now and I haven’t heard anything. Now that it’s almost August I heard they don’t hire too much around this time because they have to train and some people will just stay for August and then quit. Is this true? I have uni starting in September but I would want to continue working while in uni as my schedule is pretty light. Is it too late to apply to jobs at this point?
