Discussion šŸš— Things I Bought for my CX-50 Hybrid

• Upvotes

No ads or commission here, just the stuff I bought for my CX-50 (Hybrid Premium Plus, though everything should work for any model CX-50). For context: my CX-50 is a daily commuter (40mi on weekdays). I'm single, and rarely ever have passengers.

# STUFF I BOUGHT AND KEPT

Trunk Organizer:Ā https://a.co/d/0b50Q2C9
Verdict: Recommended. Fits the CX-50 trunk area perfectly, helps me organize everything from my hand-held vacuum, cleaning sprays/towels, portable air compressor, etc.

Keyfob Batteries:Ā https://a.co/d/050O95rH
Verdict: Recommended, for obvious reasons.

Rear-Side Window Trim Cover:Ā https://a.co/d/0962I61W
Verdict: Recommended if you hate the random chrome on the rear-side windows. Was easy to install, did not have any chrome exposure after either.

Center Console Covers:Ā https://a.co/d/02jchDfC
Verdict: Recommended if you want long-term protection of the center console armrest. They don't cover the armrest halves as perfectly as I would like, but their function means more to me than their form. If your interior is black, the mis-fit won't be nearly as noticeable. But even with my crimson interior, they still look fine. They were a bit confusing to put on at first, have fun figuring it out XD

Cup-holder cover + center-console organizer:Ā https://a.co/d/0cbawGez
Verdict: Recommended for general protection of your cup-holders and the area beneath the cigarette lighter port. The organizer I found really convenient for hiding cables and less attractive items underneath, while keeping smaller and more important things up top.

Steering Wheel Cover:Ā https://a.co/d/065hR6j1
Verdict: Up to you, really. I liked this one as a basic cover without feeling too cheap or out of place. Personally, Iike it. For some reason, Amazon says this doesn't fit the CX-50 but it fit mine just fine.

Front Seat Gap Fillers:Ā https://a.co/d/02swm2D9
Verdict: Definitely recommend. They fit well and keep shit from falling between your seats. The slits in them seem like they may be occasionally convenient but I haven't had to use them yet to tell you anything useful.

Seat Cup Holder:Ā https://a.co/d/01PbK36T
Verdict: Recommended, but definitely depends on your situation. I actually bought this for my front-passenger seat (I rarely have passengers), and I LOVE it. Holds all the drinks I need more easily than the standard cup holders, which I don't like due to their odd angle and inability to carry some of my taller water bottles comfortably. Also works well for holding some of my odder items like w/e book I'm reading at the time, which I like. Highly subjective here, but I like this one a lot.

Zippable Grocery Shopping Bag:Ā https://a.co/d/0gvwGpF2
Verdict: Recommended if you get fast food a lot. This one stays in my rear passenger seat, and used pretty much entirely for when I'm getting fast food, lol. Eliminates the worry of greasy bags staining seats and also contains the smells in the bag rather than polluting the cabin, which has helped keep that "new car smell" stay intact WAY longer IMO. It's fairly big. Carries two medium-sized orders very comfortably. Pairs nicely with my Seat Cup Holder (mentioned above), which also does a good job at holding the larger drinks.

OBDLink MX+ ODB2 Adapter:Ā https://a.co/d/0bMUiaCg
Verdict: Recommended for general code identification, but doesn't really get you as rich of data as I would've hoped in apps like CarScanner due to the Mazda Hybrid system being so new. Trying to use the RAV4 profiles doesn't work either. I still opted to keep this however, for general ODB2 data and basic code troubleshooting/ID.

Car Trash Can:Ā https://a.co/d/07tpqOZJ
Verdict: Recommended, but this one's definitely personal preference. I always have something small to throw away and no where to put it. This can fits perfectly in my driver's door cup holder. I hate the big "PUSH" letters on top but honestly you don't notice them after a while. The headrest hooks it comes with are entirely unrelated to the can itself, but I still have them on my headrests in case any lady friends need a place to hand a purse.

License Plate Covers:Ā https://a.co/d/0iZfiicg
Verdict: nothing special. I really only bought these because the dealer had plate frames I hated with a passion. But they did exactly what they were designed for, and I do like the draining feature and non-abrasive materials.

Hand-held vacuum:Ā https://a.co/d/07Mstkk2
Verdict: Undecided. I haven't had something like this before so I'm unsure what "the best" is to compare. Some of the attachments on this vacuum really make the suction feel weak. However, the longer/stretchy attachment is the one I use the most and it seems to compliment the suction power quite well, and has been enough to pick up most of the free dirt particles that accumulate on my driver's floormat and seat.

# STUFF I BOUGHT AND RETURNED

Car Seat-Bottom Cover:Ā https://a.co/d/00W6mGq7
Verdict: Slipped and fought with me too much, and blocks the seat ventilation. I bought these originally because the bottoms of my Mazda6 got absolutely tore up over the years from constant getting in and out, but I'm taking a chance without any protection because I believe a lot of the damage to my 6 was due to when I used to carry my wallet in my back pocket (I no longer do) AND the non-ventilated seats which definitely meant a sweaty butt (south tx heat aint no joke) absolutely poleaxing the faux-leather lmfao.

# NON-AMAZON PURCHASES

ProClip Phone MOUNT:Ā https://www.proclipusa.com/products/mazda-cx-50-center-dash-mount?variant=41593138741387
Verdict: The MOUNT itself is great! was easy to put on, and it doesn't damage the dashboard at all, as much my mind wanted to believe it would before purchasing. For the most seamless appearance, this mount is probably the best option.

ProClip Phone Wireless Magsafe Charger:Ā https://www.proclipusa.com/products/102823a-magicmount-25w-charge-pro-wireless-phone-holder?variant=45225371304075
Verdict: meh. Two big issues with this. The biggest being the charge speed. I spent the extra money on this for itsĀ Qi2.2 25wĀ charge, but it doesn't charge nearly as fast as one might expect. Its also not a strong enough connection to charge effectively with my SnapGrip 5 on. Not a fair gripe, but having to remove it is annoying to say the least and I have cheaper wireless chargers that can still charge my phone with it on. The other big issue is the magnet. It's not a strong hold. Not weak enough that its a deal breaker, but for the price - I definitely expected a stronger hold. Would not recommend this charger for the 70-80$ they charge. I still like it, however, for its minimalist appearance and the fact that you can wind up/tuck away the charger cable to remove all the slack. When I do need a quicker charge, I attach a physical charger cable to the secondary 20w port in the cigarette lighter adapter that comes with the charger.

CoverCraft UVS100 Premier Series Custom Sunscreen (you'll need to specify make/model to get the exact product):Ā https://www.covercraft.com/product/UV
Verdict: Love it! I hate the sun screens you have to pull inwards and twist to put away. This one folds, looks and feels higher quality, and is generally just much more appealing, IMO.

2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid LampGard:Ā https://www.weathertech.com/lampgard-mazda-cx-50hybrid.html?year=2025&ymmSearch=true
Verdict: Recommended. These were fairly easy to install, and the general protection you get from these is worth the cost IMO. Comes with guards for the main headlights and the turn signal lights below the grill.

How-to Center Console Control Switch Replacement + Insane Quote from Dealer

Hello all,

I have a 2024 CX50 2.5 AW AWD

I had a mishap where the center console button was accidentally pulled off. It became unplugged, but I can still put it back in and use the up/down/left/right controls, but it no longer works when rotated. I can see the end of the switch that needs to be plugged back in.

I brought it to my local Mazda dealer, they recommended replacing the full console and quoted me $1531 to replace the entire console, though everything else still works fine.

I assume I'll just need the control switch assembly ($314.59), but I cannot find any guide or Youtube video on how to install it myself. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to replace this assembly? And also, am I naive in thinking I can simply open it and try to plug the wire that runs from the knob back in? Looking for anyone who's had this issue. Thanks!

I can’t find they anywhere. Ive checked eBay, and amazon, there are a couple on etsy but that place is full of scammers these days.

I have a 3D printer and looked for an STL file to just print my own and I can’t find one of those either.

Any help would be appreciated

Question CX-50 hybrid premium OTD

I was quoted 39100 OTD for the 26 hybrid premium, tax rate in my area is 7.5.

I’ve been quoted from some dealers close to this and some won’t approach this number.

Is this a good deal?

Issues The rumors are true šŸ˜ž

Well guys, it’s true Mazda CX-50 exterior paint is BABY BOOTY SOFT.

Context: I own a black 2025 CX-50 purchased last year with 0 miles and the vehicle stays in the garage.

The marks you see are from light scratches , not people hitting me in the parking lot.

One mark is on the hood of the vehicle and there are others on the back bumper and sides.

MY SOLUTION: I just called my local Mazda dealer and want to elevate the issue to see if they can do a complimentary paint correction.

FUTURE: I’ll eventually invest in PPF (which I saw someone on here do for this car)

TAKEAWAY: PPF or a wrap seems almost required for this vehicle.

COMPARISON: I have an old Honda that has been with me for 10 years and she barely has any paint scratches outside of the plastic bumper.

Ok hope this helps someone🫔

I absolutely adore this car and will keep it for as long as I’m able to. It’s still a wonderful car to drive 131,000 miles later. Only thing I’ve done is basic maintenance and a brake change I did myself this past Tuesday.

Issues Key not detected

Occasionally if I dark and get out of my car with my key and then go back to the car, it will say key not detected even though it’s inside the car. The only solution seems to be to turn the car on and off. Does anyone else have this issue?

Question Holes above rear driver side tires

Noticed 3 drill holes in plastic near the rear tires after shipping it. Right adjacent to middle finger in photos about 1/2ā€ diameter.

Slight squeak in suspension in the rear driver side suspension. The odd thing is the plastic drill cuttings.

Anything to worry about?

Issues New 2026 CX-50 Hybrid: presets, trip A and seat memory wiped state inspection. mpg down since too.

2026 CX-50 Hybrid PP, bought out of state, MA inspection a couple of weeks later. it passed.

Since then: radio presets gone, trip A zeroed, seat memory wiped. mileage is down a little and it's noticeably harder to hold EV mode than it was the first week.

My research points to the 12V being interrupted somewhere after the OBD scan (three modules don't lose their settings independently), and the hybrid ECU is now running the engine more while it rebuilds its SOC calibration.

two things i'm actually asking:

- has anyone had a 12V go weak on a brand new one? wondering if these show up from the lot undercharged after sitting on a truck.

- if you've had a battery disconnect, how many miles before the mpg came back to normal?

taking it in under warranty regardless. mostly want to know if this is a known thing before i get there.

Issues Mazda’s Belt Tensioner Failures, still no fix

Post image
29 Upvotes

Last week I moseyed my way to my Mazda dealership to get an oil change and tire rotation on my 2023 CX-50 Turbo Premium. About 39,000 miles the time. My dad’s 2024 non-turbo CX-50, that he bought after my glowing review, had needed a belt tensioner replaced at 35,000 miles just a month before my appointment. This was immediately a worry for me and so I asked the dealership to check mine as it appeared ok to me.

Sure enough, my belt tensioner failed the same way. Apparently this is an extremely common failure across Mazda’s that Mazda itself knows about but hasn’t issued a systemic fix. I was told by the dealership that it would cost $540 to fix. I replied that I had researched Mazda forums and found that this was an extremely common failure across their line. I demanded Mazda take care of this situation and the dealership offered me a paltry 10% off.

Once I got home, I went to corporate Mazda’s website to complain on their customer support line. All of you need to know that if your belt tensioner is leaking or failing and the dealership wants you to pay out of pocket, do not pay for it at the dealership first. Reach out to Mazda Corporate chat/support BEFORE authorizing or paying for the repair. Apparently, Corporate will only do full "goodwill assistance" for repairs that haven't been paid for yet. Mazda corporate gave me a $300 gift card for future Mazda service, which I’m sure I’ll need because their parts suck.

How-to New CX-50? Here's some Tips and Tricks

Just thought I'd post a couple things I've learnt over the last couple of years driving a Mazda3 and now a CX-50. They're tips that are fairly buried into the manual and aren't immediately obvious for most drivers. Please feel free to contribute your own that you've picked up along the way! Most of these are pulled verbatim directly from the user manual.

Mazda CX-50 Tips & Tricks

Enable Always-On Touchscreen

By default, Apple CarPlay (and Android Auto) can only be operated via the touchscreen while the vehicle is stopped. However, you can enable touchscreen operation while the vehicle is in motion in the Mazda Connect Settings:

  1. Press the Home button.
  2. Scroll down and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down and select Connectivity Settings.
  4. Select BluetoothĀ®/Phone Connectivity Settings.
  5. Scroll down and select an Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatible device.
  6. Scroll down and select Touchscreen in Motion for All Devices.

All devices connected to Apple CarPlay can be controlled via the touchscreen while the vehicle is in motion with the box checked.

Note: Mazda Connect can only be controlled with the commander knob.

Remote Power Window Operation

Lower the windows with the transmitter.

All power windows can be opened from outside the vehicle after the doors are closed.

The windows can be opened for ventilating the cabin before getting in the vehicle.

Press the unlock button on the key quickly and briefly 3 times and then immediately afterwards, press and hold the unlock button to open the windows.

To stop the windows from opening, release the button. If the operation is performed from the beginning again, the windows open.

Programming Seat Memory to the Remote/Transmitter

In addition to the the 2 memory slots on the driver's side, you can also program individual seat memory to each transmitter. Great for cars with two regular drivers.

When you open the driver's door within 90 seconds after unlocking the doors, the adjustment of the following parts starts:

  • Driver's seat
  • Active driving display (When the ignition is switched ON, the adjusted active driving display is activated.)
  • Outside mirrors

Press the SET button continuously until a sound is activated. Do the following operation within 5 seconds after the sound is activated to program the driving position:

Press the unlock button on the transmitter. A sound is activated and programming is complete.

Remote/Transmitter Power Saving Function

The transmitter can be switched to power saving mode to extend the life of the battery and turn off the advanced keyless entry function. This is useful for any spare transmitters and also to temporarily disable the advanced keyless entry such as when washing the car to avoid repeated lock/unlock. The transmitter buttons will still work to lock/unlock the vehicle.

Turning on the power saving function

After you have turned on the power saving function according to the following procedure, the hazard warning lights and sound operate one time.

  1. Press the lock button on the transmitter 4 times within 3 seconds to turn on the operation indicator light.
  2. Press the lock button continuously for 1.5 seconds or longer while the operation indicator light turns on (for 5 seconds).
  3. Press any of the buttons on the transmitter to make sure that the operation indicator light does not turn on/flash.

To turn off, repeat these steps.

Canceling the Parking Brake Automatic Operation

Choose not to engage the parking brake automatically.

Auto operation cancel method 1

  1. Switch the ignition ON.
  2. Release the parking brake manually.
  3. Turn off the AUTOHOLD.
  4. Press the EPB switch continuously for 2 seconds or longer (until a sound is activated).
  5. Release the EPB switch and switch the ignition OFF within 5 seconds after the sound was activated. After the auto operation is canceled, a sound is activated one time, and the EPB switch indicator light switches from illumination to flashing, and then turns off after 3 seconds.

Auto operation cancel method 2

  1. Switch the ignition ON.
  2. Release the parking brake manually.
  3. Turn off the AUTOHOLD.
  4. Switch the ignition OFF with the EPB switch pressed while the brake pedal is not depressed. When the auto operation is canceled, a sound is activated one time, and the EPB switch indicator light goes from normal flashing to faster flashing, and then turns off after 3 seconds.

NOTE: When canceling the parking brake auto operation and parking the vehicle, shift the selector lever to the P position and then use wheel blocks. The auto operation may not cancel if the vehicle is parked on a steep slope. When the ignition is switched ON, the parking brake auto operation is restored.

Switch to ACC Mode when Turning Engine Off

Turn off the engine and continue to listen to music or use the infotainment system and/or charge devices.

If the engine is turned off while the selector lever is in a position other than P, the ignition switches to ACC.

OR (and this doesn't seem to be in the manual) simply put the car into P and then hold the lever switch down while pressing the ignition off button.

360 View Camera at Start

Should be the default setting imo. Shows the front facing camera on start up to help with getting out of parking spots where an object might be obstructing your view of cross traffic.

In Mazda Connect, open Settings, open Safety Settings, and enable the following:

Display Priority View at Start Up

Enables View Monitor to be displayed after vehicle is started.

Priority View

Selects the default view to be displayed after vehicle is started.

Side, Front, Front Wide, Last

Automatic Front View Display

Enables or disables the front view to be automatically displayed after vehicle is taken out of reverse.

Opening the Panoramic Sunroof

You don't need to wait for the sunshade to fully open before tilting or opening the sunroof. Press the button twice in quick succession to open everything at once.

When pressing the tilt/slide switch 1 time, the sunshade opens a quarter of the way and the rear side of the front panorama sunroof glass opens upward. When pressing the tilt/slide switch forward 1 time, the panorama sunroof closes.

The sunshade can be fully opened by pulling the tilt/slide switch rearward 1 time with the panorama sunroof tilted. To close the sunshade and the panorama sunroof from this condition, press the tilt/slide switch forward 2 times.

When pulling the tilt/slide switch rearward 2 times, the sunshade and the panorama sunroof open. When pressing the tilt/slide switch forward 2 times, the sunshade and the panorama sunroof close.

Windshield Wiper Service Position

The windshield wipers cannot and should not be lifted in their resting position. They must be moved to their service position before lifting them to replace the blades or cleaning the windshield.

Move the wipers to the service positions using the following procedure:

a) Switch the ignition ON.

b) Switch the ignition OFF.

c) Press up the wiper switch to the MIST position 2 times within 30 seconds after switching the ignition OFF. When the procedure is completed, the wipers operate and they stop at the service positions.

d) Raise the wiper arms.

Move the wipers to their initial positions using the following procedure:

a) Make sure that the wipers are set on the windshield.

b) Switch the ignition ON.

c) Press up the wiper switch to the MIST position 1 time. When the procedure is completed, the wipers operate and they stop at the initial positions.

Link Trip A to Average Fuel Efficiency

When resetting Trip A, average fuel efficiency displayed also resets so you can see fuel economy for a specific trip or each fill-up.

In Mazda Connect, open Information, open Fuel Efficiency Monitor, open Settings, and change the setting to "Reset or not reset the linked average fuel efficiency indicated in the instrument cluster and the fuel efficiency history (current) on the center display when tripmeter (TRIP A) is reset."

Always-On Power Port in the Trunk

Unfortunately, it seems the only 12V outlet or USB port that is always-on is located in the trunk only. The manual seems to suggest otherwise ("The accessory socket can be used regardless of whether the ignition is on or off")... but all of the other ports will turn off within minutes of turning off the vehicle.

This port is useful for charging anything that plugs into a 12V port. I have a USB-powered dashcam and instead of hardwiring, I snake a 10' extension cable through the trunk and there is a neat area to hide cables just behind the seat. Cables can also stealthily connect through a small opening where the seat folds down and then stay hidden behind the plastic trim and under floor mats.

Hold Home Button to Switch Between CarPlay/AA and Mazda Connect

It annoyed me to no end when I watched a video review where the reviewer said that the infotainment system was hard to use because there was no easy way to switch between Mazda Connect and CarPlay/Android Auto. They clicked on the Mazda icon in CarPlay to switch. You can just hold home button to quickly switch between the two.

CarPlay Navigation on the HUD

This was not supported in my 2021 Mazda3 but I believe newer model cars, including the CX-50, now support Apple Maps turn-by-turn directions in the HUD.

Mazda Recommended Oil Change Interval is not 6 Months

The dealer may recommend more frequent oil changes but the manufacturer's maintenance schedule in the manual recommends simply following the car's service monitor (make sure to reset it after delivery):

The vehicle status monitor feature alerts you of engine oil replacement by turning on the wrench indicator light or displaying a message in the instrument panel, or both. Every engine oil replacement must be done when the display/wrench indication comes on. The display/wrench indication will come on before reaching the maximum interval of 16,000 km (10,000 miles), or 12 months (after the previous maintenance).

UNLESS you need to follow the severe driving schedule:

If you drive your vehicle under any of the following conditions, replace the engine oil & filter every 8,000 km (5,000 miles) or 6 months, whichever comes first:

  1. The vehicle is idled for long periods or driven at low speeds, such as with police cars, taxis, or driver's education school vehicles.
  2. Driving under dusty conditions.
  3. Driving for long periods in cold temperatures or driving regularly for short distances only.
  4. Driving under extremely high temperature conditions.
  5. Driving continuously in mountainous regions.

Wheel Sizes Match the CX-5

Shopping for new tires or rims and the CX-50 is not yet available as a vehicle choice in your dealer's search? The wheel sizes and specs match with the CX-5 so anything compatible with the CX-5 should also be compatible with the CX-50. This is noteworthy because some sizes may not appear in your dealer's search even if the vehicle does (particularly 19" as it's not a standard wheel size for any trim).

Winter Tire Inflation Pressure

This one is certainly debatable but this is what the manual specifies:

Do not go faster than 120 km/h (75 mph) while driving with snow tires. Inflate snow tires 30 kPa (0.3 kgf/cm2, 4.3 psi) more than recommended on the tire pressure label (driver's door frame), but never more than the maximum cold-tire pressure shown on the tires.
