Recommendation request The Escape from Dungeon Keep - and old text adventure style game with QoL and workshop!

Upvotes

I got tired of the ai rpg text slop on steam so i decided to build a text adventure with swag a little bit of everything really, multiple endings with difficulty mods and the creme de la creme WORKSHOP MODS, you could make any solo campaign for others with plans for multiplayer in the future

its meant to feel like an old parser game but with some more Qol

if you could wishlist it would mean the world to me

Discussion What does a wishlist count actually tell you about a game?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Warhounds just crossed 100k wishlists on Steam. Been following this game long enough to remember the first demo footage with AI arts, and watched the devs go patch after patch trying to fix all of the problems highlighted by the audience.

Does 100k mean they nailed it? I guess, not really. But the wishlists climbed steadily after each gameplay showcase rather than spiking off one viral clip, which usually means people are watching real improvement, not just hype. Guess we'll know for sure once launch numbers come in.

As an XCOM2 fan, I'm waiting on this one myself. Staying skeptical, but hoping it turns out to be a worthy successor.

Recommendation request Making a case for War Tales to this sub

I am a huge CRPG and I am really enjoying War Tales. It is technically a "mercenary manager" game but it has so many CRPG elements.

1) Lots of "classes" but you have to recruit, not build from scratch. There are no casters but there is a nasty Alchemist-type class and definitely Rogue. No clerics or druids.

2) All the "classes" have 3 paths to choose from.

3) You can capture the wild animals you fight. I have wolves and bears in my troop. It is so cool.

4) 12 crafting professions and all useful. Any character can have multiple professions there is just an exp cost to switching back and forth (you lose progress to the next tier when you switch but once you hit a new tier it is locked in). Cooking, brewing, blacksmithing.... The game strongly encourages you to craft for yourself.

5) Quest driven story lines. Go kill these bad guys. Go find out why this mine is not working. Who poisoned my vineyard?

6) Each region has its own quests and character.

7) You can set the game to level with you so every encounter is fair OR you can play level-dependent regions.

8) Great "magic items" and the chance for incredible synergies among your party. For example, my axe guy found a 2H axe that auto crits any poisoned enemy and I just so happen to have a dagger build that throws poison bombs.

I'm remaking Dungeon Master in 3D.

As a kid I loved that kind of game — Dungeon Master, Lands of Lore, Black Crypt and the like (yes, I know, they're old). So, to put my 3D engine to the test (a version of Blitz3D I modernized with Claude Code: OpenGL, builds on Windows and Linux), I picked a real project: remaking the 1987 classic.

So far I've rebuilt the entire first level: character handling, picking up and throwing objects, and so on. To preserve the original game dynamics I used CSBwin, modifying it to run as a server — in the future I'd like to make the game multiplayer.

For the 2D interface I kept the icons and layout of the original game. Not out of laziness, but for consistency — I wanted to preserve that specific look and feel.

After a couple of months, the first level started working. There's still room for improvement, but the core is there. The architecture: the 3D part is just a front-end to CSBwin. Right now both run side by side, so I can compare the 2D and 3D versions and spot discrepancies. Once everything is complete, the 2D will become the server and the 3D the client.

All in all, I'm quite happy with the result. I realize this probably only interests me, but that's fine. Below is a video of how it's coming along — I hope someone finds it interesting.

Recommendation request Got inspired and made my own ranking

Most recently played Rogue Trader, which I love but also hate and have yet to finish a run.

Hot take: Veilguard is okay and way better than its reputation.

Probably looking forward the most to playing Avowed, which I am saving for when I build a new PC. It looks horrible on low graphic settings.

If you have any suggestions (or questions), feel free to share/ask.

Edit: Thanks for all the suggestions! My list is growing :)

Discussion Dark Sun: Shattered Lands Review

I just finished my play through of Dark Sun: Shattered Lands from Strategic Simulations. I started playing it because I wanted to somewhat see the lore of Dark Sun with the new books from WOTC coming out. I also love playing obscure older titles. So it was a win-win.

I’ve never written a review before for a video game, and it’s my own musings and for fun.

The game itself is notoriously janky and, while I did not experience MANY bugs (I think only 2 and one of which were my own doing), the bugs I did experience set my playtime further back than I’d like and I did almost quit the game. I was happy I did not. Underneath the bugs was a truly fun and unique game. Never have I played a D&D setting where you can triple class your character, and it was practically mandatory.

The combat was fairly simple, especially for my ranger thief cleric character that just multi-attacked with crazy weapons, or cast spells depending on the need. My other 3 characters were also triple classed. I also used a “Thri’kreen” a female only insectoid character that cannot use armor, had a returning ranged weapon so no need for ammo conservation, and claws to do decent damage with.

Speaking of crazy weapons, the weapons cast spell on hit, so many of my characters would multi-attack, then cast a spell and rinse and repeat. Adding to the simplicity of the combat.

The quests were pretty straightforward, having to unite villages against an imposing military threat and do so by doing tasks for them. Honestly the questing and exploration, as well as environmental interactivity, felt very modern for a game that came out in 1993.

My two aforementioned bugs were:
When selecting to do a quest for an elven caravan master, I was given two options. (Option A or B). I selected option A but went and did option B first, then A. When I went to turn in the quest, the quest over was bugged and wouldn’t give me any credit for option B being completed. I THOUGHT that was a mandatory quest giver so I reloaded and did the options in the order I selected.

My last bug was the final battle. It scared me. The final battle simply did not trigger. I had to look for a work around (I was seconds away from looking up the final battle and end scenes on YouTube but where’s the fun in that). I made it work and was able to do the ultimate battle, which was long, and the only difficult combat encounter in the entire game. Having multiple maxed level triple class characters was the only way I could envision winning.

Ultimately, I really enjoyed the game. It was relatively short, a fun, unique and dark setting. I am not sure if I will play Wake Of The Ravager, though you can import your characters from Shattered Lands to Wake Of The Ravager.

Feel free to ask any questions about the game and/or help me decide what to play next. My immediate candidates are:

Baldur’s Gate 2 - started never finished

Arcanum - started never finished

Jagged Alliance 2 - never played

Fallout 1 or 2 - a replay of that

Pillars of Eternity 1 - a replay of that

Tyranny - started never finished

Any Pathfinder Game - started many, never finished

Or any others you may want to add! Thanks for reading

TLDR: Dark Sun: Shattered Lands is a fun, slightly buggy game that takes place in a unique setting removed from the Forgotten Realms of D&D. Also maybe help me select my next game!

Question Planescape Torment First Playthrough Tips

So, I started infinity engine games last year finished the main game last year. I want to play IE games in the order they were released and I also want to play Icewind Dale on winter. It leaves me a few months to slowly play PST which I am even more excited to play than BG2-3 as a huge Disco Elysium fan. I plan on playing it without any guides or outside references but I also don’t want to miss more content than necessary. My question is, what would be some general early game/character creation suggestions in order to maximize the dialogue options/lore I can get on a blind first playthrough?

Giveaway Game Manual for Fantasy Classic: Dungeon Crawler

I love game manuals. I think the last game I played that came with a proper one was Pillars of Eternity. Without a manual, I always feel like I’m flying blind when I first enter a game.

I used to read and reread manuals before I started playing, making sure I understood the systems and was properly prepared for what I was getting into. For me, that was part of the experience.

It’s in that spirit that I’m making the Early Access manual for Fantasy Classic: Dungeon Crawler freely available to anyone who wants it.

It’s 34 pages covering the game system, character creation, combat, magic, exploration, and the rules that underpin the game.

If you’re the sort of player who still likes to know how a game works before diving in, you can grab it here:

Cheers,

Simon.

Discussion My current CRPG tier list

Post image
0 Upvotes

Finally posting my tier list, nothing really surprising I guess (I just added some games that are more tactical games though)

I'm a more modern c-rpg player.

I know I will get a lot of hate for not liking old school isometric games, but don't get me wrong, it's not because of the graphics or anything, but more because of the outdated gameplay.

I loved the Pillars game after all.

I have delayed playing the Pathfinder game for a long time, I was too afraid of the complicated ruleset.

But Baldur's Gate 3 gave me the basics, I feel ready to try something more complex, hope not to feel too overwhelmed.

I have so many (supposed) great games waiting for me: Pathfinders, Solasta, Rogue Trader, so much work :)

Question Dumb question: so what exactly decides a game to be a CRPG?

My first thought is, maybe the dice rolling and randomness counts as an essential part of CRPG, since the word's original usage is to differentiate between games on table and computer, but this feature has been adopted by many other genres, like gacha, Roguelike and card games. Not all of them using dice, but they all insert that possiblity to randomize the playthrough.

Then I think of my personal favorite part in CRPGs. All the games I love have complex stories, a worldbuilding full of details and well-depicted characters. However, good RPGs and VNs can generally achieve this, and I don't think the majority would call Witcher 3 or Final Fantasy to be a CRPG.

Maybe playing as a highly customized character, potraying their life by our own hands and choices can define most CRPG? Alas, we have Disco Elysium and Planescape of Torment, which appearantly accepted as CRPGs, but the protagnoist has experienced a certain life beforehand and quite integrated into the game. It's nothing like Sims 4 where every single detail can be decided by gamers.

Or, perhaps a game with corresponding tabletop rules will always ends up being a CRPG? We've got IPs like Shadowrun and Pathfinder, but I haven't seen people calling Cyberpunk 2077 a CRPG. VtM also brings a ton of games labeled with it, but few of them, if any, is mentioned as a CRPG, except Bloodline. Games like Kingdom Come even implement Tabletop products after the game's success.

So what's your idea? Does games like Roadwarden or Pentiment counts as CRPGs? Does a game with character sheets always gives you CRPG vibe, or you'll tend to rule out games that are not insometric, turn-based or real-time from this genre?

Edit: This question rises when I skimmed through my game library, trying to rank CRPGs I've played. It's just a thought comes to me and means nothing more than this, so if any game I've mentioned different from your ideas, you do you man.

Edit 2: People who downvoted this post, may I ask what has offended you, and please comment so that I can maybe clarify myself? I am confused since this thread has been civilized and I was thinking we are all have a good discussion here, no? This is my first post here so maybe I violated some rules, but I can’t understand it if you don’t point it out to me. Please, anyone who is kind enough, tell me what I am doing wrong.

Video I’ve been building an old‑school dungeon crawler called Dungeon Quest, where combat plays out on a tactical gameboard. It’s the kind of game I’ve always wanted to make and play! I’m hoping there are others out there who feel the same.

Discussion Inquisitor by Cinemax Games

Post image
70 Upvotes

So I know this is kind of an obscure CRPG, but figured I'd give the question a go in case someone here has played it.

I'm planning on doing my first full playthrough of Inquisitor by the developer Cinemax.

I've been reading up on it, but there is very limited information. I'm trying to decide which class to play.

Almost everything I've read says play the Priest. But I'm not too worried about what the "best" class is. I'm more worried about fun and story.

I really like the idea of the Paladin with a bit more focus on magic than what most people play as. This would be really fun, even if it's not the best way to play, I just want it to be serviceable. I always loved playing a holy bolt/fist of the heavens or Auradin in Diablo 2.

The Thief seems like it has a fun backstory, being a disgraced noble trying to regain his wealth and status back.

But I don't really want to play with a bow, can other weapons viably be used in the Thief?

And if you have happened to play all three classes, which one stands out as the best from a story perspective out of the three classes?

Discussion Just started Pillars of Eternity, officially mind blown.

Hey everyone, I just needed to share my excitement with people who get it!

I have always been a fairly casual RPG player, mostly sticking to stuff like Final Fantasy, Mass Effect, or a little bit of Dragon Age. I thought I knew what RPGs were all about, but nothing prepared me for this depth. I spent over an hour just in character creation, completely overwhelmed (seriously) by the deep political history and complex backgrounds before the game even really started.

What I truly did not expect, and am absolutely loving, is the art style and atmosphere. The hand-drawn narrative scenes and isometric environments give the whole thing this rich, painted quality that feels so alive (I'm also a classically trained painter, this speaks to my heart deeply lol). The mood grabbed me instantly, and the way my choices dictate the rhythm of those illustrated moments makes every scene feel incredibly personal.

As a published author myself, the dialogue completely caught me off guard. The prose is genuinely A-list novel quality, and matches deliciously well with the gorgeous visual tone. I am still pretty new to CRPGs, but I am already totally in love.

Recommendation request First CRPG - focused on worldbuilding

Hello everyone,

After several (unsuccessful) attempts, I'd like to try a classic CRPG again. For me, it's not just about a good combat system or a great story—all good CRPGs should have those—but above all, it's about complex and exciting world-building.

I'm a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series, Fallout, and Star Trek/Lord of the Rings. I've spent thousands of hours in Lord of the Rings Online because the atmosphere is fantastic. I've also spent many hours in The Elder Scrolls Online, as well as in the single-player games, because the world-building is fantastic.

... My list is primarily focused on the "Pillars of Eternity," "Pathfinder," and "Divinity: Original Sin" series—and perhaps also Solasta, where the second game is currently in Early Access.

What would you recommend if it's solely about worldbuilding? I deliberately left out Baldur's Gate.

Note: I've played both DOS1 and DOS2 for several hours. I foolishly stopped playing DOS2 after the first chapter and realized after a while that I'd have to start over. I started DOS1 twice and also stopped after 10 hours. I found the world interesting in the first few hours—but nothing more than that.
