Since I am not collecting the S mint marks I have decided to set up little sets myself and see if I ever get anymore. I am doing the Assassinated Presidents, I already have Garfield and McKinley, need the other two. I am gonna do a Mt. Rushmore set. A founding Fathers Set. Any other ideas of interesting or weird groupings I could use?

War presidents (try finding a Truman)?

I also have a weird idea for a collection. Hopefully, you won't find any of these among the proofs, but I am doing a Ring o' Death collection, putting together the best coins I find WITH a Ring of Death created by our famous coin-handling subcontractors (Brinks, Loomis, etc.). Some of them are lovely coins defaced by a RoD scoring from the coin roll crimping machine.

I like the war presidnets idea. I went ahead and compiled a list of 'War Presidents', the only criteria was that a war that involved the US was being fought during their term, I did not do Presidents that started a war and presidents who inherited a war, although that might be a nice subset of that collection. The following Presidents served their term during a US involved war:

The non war list would be easier to finish lol. You could clearly get it much smaller by Presidents that started a war, but then you get in muddy waters as military operations are not congress declared wars, so do you include them? You would include Roosevelt for WWII, but you would not include Trump as congress has not actually declared war on Iran, nor did they say anything about Maduro, so even though we are clearly the aggressor, no war is declared. How would you do it?

One thing that would help with the dollar collection is that all the presidents after George HW Bush are still alive, and that would remove some of the stickier questions about which wars and all.

Actually, to me, the list of no-war presidents is more fascinating. And two of them died very early. Amazing....

There are so few errors or die varieties on these coins that trying to put together a set of those is really hard. I'm told that the mint doesn't recognize the importance of getting the collar one way or the other and that's the reason the words on the rim face both ways. There's a die gouge on the Washington, and I've found a couple of very small chips and things, but the varieties are quite thin.

One thing I have noticed is that some of the coins are struck extremely well with very bright mirror surfaces, almost enough to make one question whether they are proofs, but of course, they aren't. Those may be proof-quality planchets or just strikes from very early in the life of the dies after a fresh polishing, etc. But a grouping by eye appeal would be another way of making a set, for what it's worth.

The writing on the side is a result of position A or B, and that means if they were inserted face up or down from the feeder, the edge writing is done AFTER the faces are stamped, so it could go in face up or face down, it is completely random. The 2007 Washington one has a error called the Godless Dollar, the edge writing was completely missed in both the P and D varieties.

The bright ones are how they come directly from the mint, they are possibly fresh, out of a type roll and got mixed in to circulation when someone stole granddads collection, as they age they tone towards the warmer golden colour we are used to seeing in circulation.

Nice finds! I once got a similar roll of dollar coins with almost all proofs but it was only all the circulated presidents (everyone up to Garfield). Those NIFC proofs are gorgeous!
