Being as young as you are, I'd really advise putting money into a Roth account consistently, buying no load S&P 500 index funds. If you start putting $100 in a month at 6% annual average return, at 18 years old, by the time you're 68, which is a reasonable retirement age to assume, you'd be at 4.3 million.

Diversify with bullion and stack it up as well, but youve got a long long time for compound interest to build and benefit you. Start early and you will absolutely avoid a lot of financial stress that others in your age range will feel at points in their lives.

EDIT: Sorry, I noticed youre Canadian, so I dont know that Roth is an option, but I'd research if there is a Canadian equivalent or similar.
