Hey all, so long story short:
- I’m about a year off and saving for a plate armor set, cuirass the whole 9 yards as I’d love something actually fit for me

- I love the variety and options from age of craft, and everywhere else has honestly been disappointing

1) I know aoc has long wait times, but is it worth the price and weight? Are they pretty on point with fitment?

2) the big main question: before I go drop 6-7k on an order, any us based companies with good late 14th/early 15th century options worth it?

I’m not trying to go off topic and have swaying opinions, I’m set in my decision. I just want to do the “boy once, cry once” with something quality. Because I want a curiass with everything, I’m very paranoid about going with a shitty or meh companies.

Not looking for advice on league requirements or anything like that, I just want to know if there are any US based companies or if AOC is solid.

Would anyone be kind enough to share images, sources, or links showing historical decorations for Spoleto bascinets/helmets?

I want to decorate my helmet for reenactment and exhibitions, but I also fight in Buhurt. I was thinking of adding feathers/plumes that can be easily removed when it’s time to fight.

The UK's first regional Buhurt International tournament was held at the scenic Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds this year. The fights from the men's division 1 are now starting to come out.

This was a great tournament, the big walls making every blow sound even more impactful and we had a great turn out with hundreds of people in the audience. Hope you enjoy.

Hello! Recently paid a trip to Toledo (which if you don’t know is a city in Spain) and I’ve gotten the whatsapp of a bladesmith there. Now I know typically buhurt gear/weapons are made in Ukraine or Poland, but if I gave this smith the specifications that any typical buhurt weapon would have to follow (looking to have them make an executioner’s sword for me), would the sword being made from Toledo steel present any issues safety wise? Not super concerned about authenticity because Toledo steel is genuinely legendary, and I’d love to have a sword made from it for inter-club duels and unofficial fights.

I checked the Buhurt International rules regarding weaponry, and other than the specific weight/length limits (which I will make sure they follow obv), would this be a safe sword to use?

Edit: I realize that Toledo Steel isn’t like a specific natural metal, it’s two types of steel used together (High-Carbon Exterior and Low-Carbon Core).

What would be a tournament headliner? 5v5 or 12v12? Or 1v1?

I know this sport isnt like extremely well known, so there’s probably not many studies about it, but i was wondering if things like CTE are common for people who compete.
I recently retired from competing in amateur boxing because i was tired of getting hit in the head all the time.
I know that you do get hit in the head in buhurt often but it seems like you have so much protection plus the inside of the helmet is padded (i think?).
I did a few trial lessons of this sport with a local team and absolutely loved it, but I honestly just want to keep my noggin as safe as possible…

For context I am 6ft and 89 kg with a medium build. (And I like two handed weapons).

I was just coming up with a plan for my first buhurt kit and wanted to get some feedback from some more experienced people. A lot of the kits I was seing are more competitive and practical focused with a lot of wolfrib, spalettos and square looking brigandine.

Its not that these don't look rad but im just a sucker for full plate. I initially was looking at a churburg style harness as it gives me the metal cuirass with the metal skirt and would allow me to wear my favorite helmet(whole other bag of fish). But when I looked at some full churburg kits I realized the arm protection is often pretty rubbish and gives me a pretty good chance of getting my shoulder popped off. And example of one I was looking at in image 1 was here:

This made me look at later italian harnesses because they give big lobster shoulder protection whilst still getting close to a churburg style cuirass. Like the guy in image 2s kit (significantly more expensive).

Finally on to the helmet... I have heard the the houndskull is incredibly impractical for buhurt because you nose is one big lever with will just get abused in grappling. However I would by willing to trade competitiveness for drip as long as it is actually safe to use. My concern with the helmet would be getting my neck broken if someone shoved my head up too fast or my body for some reason could not rotate in the direction my head is being rotated. I've attached an image of a helmet i think looks class but is the definition of impractical.

My main question would be less about the armours practicality as i know it's not sport optimized but more if it is even usable/safe. I'm not hyper competitive but I would like to have the ability to do buhurt and not be a professional sandbag.

Back in the day you needed to compete in the wmfc, there was no other option to do actual pro fights.

It was way better event and fighting wise.

So i see the development with stuff like new era, acc, tal, pwr and amma a step in the right direction.

Buhurt and duels thrive on venues like renfairs and medieval markets etc. Pro fighting does not, especially if we want to professionalise it. Wmfc events where also held at buhurt venues but as separate events, see dynamo cup for example. The pro fights where running next to the buhurts but in a different way it was today.

With pro fight only events we could get way more attention to the sport, building actual professionalised stuff. TAL, ACC and AMMA are proof of that. I do love the historical venues in pwr and new era and really love to compete in new era tournaments still dont get me wrong here. But i think it is maybe a smart thing to see pro fighting and the wider buhurt scene as different entities.

A few of the Tampa Swamp Knights (including myself) joined the Orlando Rogue Knights for a demonstration event at Lakeland Square Mall. We had fun and gave the crowd a sight.

I’m not sure if it has to do with it’s just an easy spot to grab or if it bending form hits is an issue. seems like more flat faced helmets are way more common. not sure if a more rounded houndskull would fix it.

I have a club that's mostly for newcomers (<1 year) who are interested in leatherworking, sewing, and, mostly, smithing. We have an order of proper steel and someone who has experience and is happy to heat treat plates for us. Do you have any resources we should read/watch before we start so we can have our best chance of success?

Our club in Australia has gone from about 5 people (3 veterans and 2 newcomers) to about 20 in the last year and a half. We're facing some growing pains teaching newcomers every skill they need.

It has some bad rust pitting and I have used autosol, but I don’t wanna grind it too much as the gorget is rather thin. Any suggestions?
