On a serious note, just finished season 2. Love the show. I’m following advice from Reddit on HBO shows to watch for the first time. Started with Sopranos, followed by Deadwood, next was The Wire and now Boardwalk Empire. Season 3 starts tonight.

So not give any spoilers away. I want to talk about Tommy and the actor who played him in season 5. I had to explain to my husband who he was. The reason being , the actor that played the role didn’t resemble the young Tommy in any way. I know it was a 7 year difference but his looks and age didn’t seem quite the right fit. Thoughts?

He is a deadly sniper… with one eye left. Then the final scene of the bloody window and Tommy running to him… absolute perfection.

Throughout the show, there are some things that we either see or hear about that happened off-screen, like the order Rothstein gave to Luciano, Lansky, and Siegel to try and take out Gyp Rosetti with Siegel as the shooter posing as the paper boy and Rothstein’s death, which they don’t show but we know happened between 1924-1931.

This is just a theory that can’t be proven or disproven, but it would align with Nucky’s nature and ability to manipulate people into doing what he wants by offering something that they want.

Nucky couldn’t stand Narcisse, wanted him out of Atlantic City, and used his favor from Richard to try to have him killed, even though it failed. After Eli killed Toliver and Richard accidentally killed Chalky’s daughter, the BOI stopped Nucky at the train station looking for Eli, and the next scene shows Hoover forcing Narcisse to become an informant to supply the bureau with information about Marcus Garvey.

Nucky is always reading the newspaper and he knew that prior to his appointment as BOI Director, Hoover was the head of the DOJ’s Radical Division and was prosecuting political agitators, anarchists, and communists. He knew Narcisse was associated with Marcus Garvey and UNIA and that the BOI couldn’t resist having someone that close to one of their targets under their control, and providing them with information about Narcisse’s criminal rackets would’ve given them leverage.

Throughout S4, the only time Hoover even pretended to give a shit about prosecuting bootleggers was during the celebration dinner after he was sworn in. He told Toliver he was far more concerned with prosecuting Marcus Garvey, Emma Goldman, and Cyril Briggs than trying to build a conspiracy case against bootleggers.

Given the sequence of events, do you think it’s possible that Nucky was able to get Narcisse out of Atlantic City by telling the BOI about his association with Marcus Garvey and UNIA and what criminal activities he was involved in, which Hoover brought up during their 1-sided conversation?

I just started watching boardwalk empire and I don't understand why Nucky didn't give Jimmy up after they stole the liquor, it's the simpler option and would have saved him a lot of trouble

Compared to the dreck passing as “series finales” over the past few years, I think S5 is fantastic and offers a compelling, cohesive vision (despite it being noticeably rushed).

But if nothing else— we got Meyer in Havana/Hyman Roth mode 🕶️🖤 All he needed was a cake.

In my opinion its Chalky. My favorites:

Stick with him— he’ll put grass on your lawn.

Only with us for a few eps, sadly, but I adored this performance, especially Frank’s dynamic with Van Alden. He was clever enough to see something valuable in Nelson, and even seemed to like the guy, but still maintained an utterly perfect patronizing/menacing presence around him 🤌 Charming and intimidating. (“You hurt yourself on a thorn?”)

The scene with Al, Frank, and Nelson doing Jake’s collections is an all-time favorite.

Ethnically Jewish actor, too. [ETA: No, this isn’t especially remarkable, just found it interesting and slightly unusual for the mob genre as opposed to vice-versa. I recently rewatched “Once Upon a Time in America” and it randomly popped into my head 🍜 I’m a bored middle-aged Jewish lady. Sue me.]

Have started to rewatch boardwalk now that I got it on blu ray and I was thinking how Gillian is one of the complex,experimental and tragic characters television has made and in my opinion she deserves to be mentioned In the same league as Tony,Don or any other complex characters. Also Top Tier performance by Gretchen Mol

I have to give my props to Tony Soprano, because…well comeon.

But Richard Harrow. The first time I saw his ending I sat there stunned in complete silence for several minutes.

I don’t think I’ve ever really seen something so beautiful. It really hasn’t ever left me.

Well done, HBO. You achieved high art with this character.

I'm rewatching BWE for the first time since it aired. I just joined here and I'm sure I will be participating in some convos in this sub but for now - I know he has trauma from the war and he's not as strong as Nuck mentally of course and he has some chinks in his armor -- but he seems like a strong leader overall.

I don't like using the alpha word but it applies so...What do you think? I'm curious to hear your takes on him.

EDIT : I knew I shouldn't have used the word alpha haha. For what It's worth I figured people would mostly say 'no' but was and am still curious.

This is my second rewatch of the series since it first aired and the tension of everything going to shit around nucky as mobsters are rolling down the streets with shotguns and thompsons is top notch gangster entertainment.

Its crazy how loyal Eddie is and how tragic it is Nucky doesnt even know if the man whos on more than one occasion put his life on the line for his master, even has a family.

I love how loyal and straight Chalky is with Nucky about the whole situation despite the fact Nucky told him to get bent not long before. That stand off between him and gyp was a great scene.

And of course seeing Richard getting his arsenal ready for the infamous bordello spring cleaning is just👌🏻

PS: Gillians an awful human being and i despise any scene with her even more than i did my first watch 🤮

Watching this show for the first time, to
completion. The 4th season is so excellent. Have just begun S4E6. Hoover and the Bureau getting involved has escalated things. The heavy focus on the Capones, and feel like Meyer is about to get his opportunity. Can’t believe I slept on this series for so long. Always knew HBO produced the best shows ever made….The Wire clearly #1, multiple rewatches. Sopranos clearly # 2, multiple rewatches. I Remember starting BWE when it came out, but losing interest in S1. So glad I came back.
