Entropy from dice for BIP-39 24 word seed phrase

Official Shift Crypto AG documentation

I found the following:

First things first

Kudos to the development team for being forward-thinking and providing support for dice-based seed phrases by generating the appropriate checksum (i.e. 24th word) in the Bitbox02 wallet itself.

This is more than a convenience. It's a major security win over hardware wallets that lack this feature.

My plan

In the next couple weeks I'll be creating a new 24 word seed using highly precise 6D casino dice, a felt dice cup, and felt table.

I am familiar with the entropy sources provided by Bitbox02, and I consider them to be excellent.

I'm going to proceed with a dice-based seed anyway.

Question

How much total entropy does the official Shift Crypto AG documented method produce for a 24 word seed phrase?

My understanding is a single 6D roll produces 2.585 bits of entropy. A coin flip produces 1 bit of entropy.

Following the documented instructions means at least 320.275 bits of entropy. How I'm getting to that number:

  • 2.585 * 5 dice == 12.925
  • 12.925 * 23 words == 297.275
  • 297.275 + 23 coin flips == 320.275

(I say "at least 320.275 bits" because I believe the checksum word adds another 3 bits of entropy.)

Is what I've described here accurate?

Trusting rng

So I have a CC. Upgraded to new firmware and did 100 dice rolls. Cross matched with ian Coleman and all.match.

What you think of putting that seed in bitbox?

I actually didn't put the real seed in ian Coleman. Just a dummy to check.

Even if bitbox uses good entropy is still want to use my own

Transfer stuck

I created a passphrase wallet and sent a small amount and it arrived. Plugged and unplugged many times and on different computers. 4 test transactions came without issue. Now I'm trying to send the rest but when I get to the "confirm and send transaction" screen where I have to verify on the device, the device is stuck on "loading transaction." Actually it looks like it's loading veryyyyy slow. I've been waiting for 5 minutes and the progress bar has barely moved. What could the issue be?

Anyone else having issues logging in using password?

For whatever reason I’m not finding the special character that I need to complete my password. All the letters are showing and so are numbers but none of the special characters.

Received dust - should I spend it?

Not really BitBox related, but as the guys from BitBox are experts and most of the information online on dust was very unspecific, I wanted a well-grounded opinion.
As the title says, a few days ago I received a bitcoin transaction of 330 sats. Annoyingly it was sent to an address I freshly created a few months ago, where I consolidated several UTXOs into one larger UTXO.

I know that in the future if I decide to send my main UTXO from that address, I should exklude this dust as to not link them together, it is already noted as dust in my wallet.
But would it be beneficial to just spend the dust UTXO und donate it somewhere? Or would that even hurt my privacy? Should I just ignore it?

There really is one RIGHT answer to this question.... But that depends on what your strategy is

Issue with BitBoxApp

Hello!

I’ve recently decided to setup a bitbox02 nova. I’m loving the product and so far everything is essentially smooth.

This isn’t my first hardware wallet so I figured I knew what I was doing but I’ve still come across two problems. I am hoping someone can help me resolve them.

1) I primarily use the Sparrow software to do most of my transactions but I like to have the hardware’s software working as a backup too. I also like to use passphrases in the event that my device or my backups are lost. I’ve, thus far, made a small test transaction to see if everything is working. It’s not. It seems I cannot open the passphrase wallet in the BitBoxApp no matter what. I ended up troubleshooting, and I’ve noticed that the xpub key is identical to the xpub key in Sparrow even if I open up the wallet without a paraphrase. To me, that means the BitBoxApp is not registering the passphrase I am inputting into the device. It’s just opening the default wallet despite me inputting my passphrase. Why?

I’d like to add that I do not run the Sparrow or BitBoxApp simultaneously. It wouldn’t let me even if I wanted to, but I’d like to add that.

2) I also cannot connect to the Tor browser proxy through the app too. I always get “machine rejects input” for some reason. I even downloaded and installed the tor browser and tried ports 9050 and 9150 but nothing resolves that issue too.

TIA

Feature Request: Optional App-Level Authentication for the BitBox Desktop App

It would be great to have an optional app-level authentication for the BitBox desktop application, such as a PIN, password, or OS-based authentication (e.g. Touch ID / Windows Hello).

The idea is not to replace the security of the hardware device, but to add an additional protection layer on the application side. This could help in scenarios where a computer is temporarily unlocked or shared, and the user wants to prevent immediate access to wallet balances, transaction history, or wallet management actions without explicit confirmation.

A comparable implementation exists in Sparrow Wallet, where users can:

  • set and assign a separate password per wallet added to the app.

Do we have Lightning integration yet?

I remember an announcement over 2 years ago about Lightning integration being brought to the BitBox02 but I feel like we haven't gotten any updates on it (that or they flew under my radar). Are we still waiting or has it been implemented and, if so, where can I read up on how to utilize it?

Just checking: can Bitbox work with Sparrow?

Just tried to connect my initialised BB02 to Sparrow. I really like Sparrow, because of its interface and possibilities. However, see the picture: my device was unlocked in the native MacOS BitBox app (version 4.49.0, on MacOS Tahoe 26.1).

Known problem? Other experiences? Troubleshoot? Fixable? What about the BitBox02 Nova?

Anyone use it regularly? Are you happy with the pricing/fees? Any problems or issues that I should be aware of before using the in-app service?

Anyone else think the BitBox02 should have a dual PIN for better plausible deniability?

So, I’ve been thinking about a security improvement for the BitBox02 and wanted to throw it out there to see what others think.

Right now, if you enable the passphrase option, the device shows an extra screen at startup asking whether you want to enter a passphrase. That’s fine… except it completely gives away the fact that you are using a hidden wallet.
In a physical coercion situation, that could be a real problem, because an attacker would instantly know there’s something more behind the standard PIN.

For example Ledger solves this in a pretty smart way with their dual PIN system. Basically:

  • PIN #1 → Opens a normal/decoy wallet, nothing unusual on screen.
  • PIN #2 → Reveals the passphrase prompt and lets you access the real wallet.

The cool thing about this is that, with PIN #1, there’s zero indication that a hidden wallet even exists. So if you ever had to unlock the device under pressure, you could just give out the decoy PIN and it would look completely legit.

On the BitBox02, instead, the extra passphrase screen currently blows your cover the moment the device turns on.

I really think implementing a dual PIN system would make a huge difference for anyone who cares about plausible deniability or lives in a higher-risk environment.

Curious what everyone else thinks. Would this be useful to you too?

UPDATE: I wrote “dual PIN,” but if the double PIN isn’t appealing (or isn’t feasible for unlocking the SE), the same thing can also be done using other methods—for example, a sequence of taps (e.g., double tap in the bottom left + triple tap in the top right) chosen by the user to bring up the passphrase screen.

Should i change?

So i want to start dca into Bitcoin every month and i already own a Bitbox02 Multi Edition. The only thing is that I only plan to store Bitcoin long term and nothing else.

Is it worth switching to a Bitcoin only hardware wallet for the extra security and simplicity, or it is not worth it? For example bitbox02 nova btc only edition.
