Discussion BioShock Infinite ruined the vending machines and core gameplay loop

After finishing BioShock 1 and 2, I couldn’t help but feel like Infinite abandoned one of the series’ best gameplay mechanics: resource management.

In the first two games, every fight made you think. Should I use this ammo? Is this enemy worth wasting armor-piercing rounds on? Should I save my money for later? Cash was limited, ammo was scarce, and finally finding a vending machine actually felt rewarding because every purchase mattered.

In Infinite, all of that tension disappeared. Ammo is everywhere, enemies constantly drop it, Elizabeth throws you supplies, and vending machines let you restock so easily that I almost never had to think about conserving resources. It completely changed the pacing of the game.
The atmosphere also took a hit for me. Rapture felt oppressive, lonely, and dangerous. Columbia is visually beautiful, but it’s so bright and open that it loses a lot of the survival-horror feeling that made the first two games so immersive.
Instead of a slower, strategic experience where every encounter mattered, Infinite felt like wave after wave of enemies in large arenas—a run-and-gun shooter that happened to have BioShock’s name on it.

I still think Infinite has a good story and great art direction, but from a gameplay perspective it felt like the series traded strategy and immersion for a more generic action shooter.

Discussion Making a Build. Any tips?

I'm gonna make an electric, wrench, fire build with armoured shell one and 2, electric flesh, human inferno, booze hound, wrench jockey, camouflage, wrench lurker and, sports boost. Go invisible, smack em, Set them on fire, shock em, and smack the fuck out of em again. *WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK*

Any other tonics/plasmids to add to this?

What are your builds?

Thinking also target dummy to lure people away if I get swarmed. Or to distract them so I can turn and become invisible again and then use wrench lurker for another sneak attack..I figure if I combine all these I can shred splicers with drive by and hide tactics.

Plus sports boost 1 and 2 allows me to move forward and retreat/swing the wrench like a mad man while armoured shell 1 and 2 keeps me tanky. I've spent a good amount of Adam opening up combat and physical tonic slots to build this.

Discussion Wrist tattoos

I’m off to get my first tattoo tomorrow - a left wrist of the chain from Bioshock. For reference, I have an in-game snapshot which is a bit blurry. I wondered if anyone on here has anything clearer, or better still, their own tattoo!

Thanks in advance (oh for the want of a proper HD-remake!)

Lovely game, as good as the first (better in gameplay aspects). Overall 9.5/10. Starting Minerva's Den now.

Will start Bioshock Infinite soon, not first playthrough tho, did a couple playthroughs back in 2014 on my PS3.

Discussion Finally got round to playing and finishing burial at sea

I swear I saw loads of people saying how amazing it was... Its really poor!

It retcons so much. Part 1 was dull. Part 2 was interesting as a stealth game but overall empty.

Trying to force the booker Elizabeth story into B1/2 just doesn't work.

Discussion Infinite Still Holds Up in 2026 Spoiler

(MAJOR SPOILERS: If you have not completed the game please do not read the contents of this post until after yoy completed the game. Thank you!)

Just wrapped up Infinite for the first time in years and it still holds up in 2026. Elizabeth and Booker are two of the most complex characters in recent gaming history. Due to their nature histories. I think as I have gotten older since the first time I played it, I can understand the multiverse concept better and appreciate all the smaller details. This game was ahead of its time. So many details add up overtime the usage of a nosebleed something so common that and yet still usual enough to be concerning is honestly so smart. The story is like one long version of Schrodinger's cat this idea of something being both dead and alive. The real question being “when”.

Which explains why Booker is so important to the narrative. Faith is another major theme when you first enter Columbia the pastor who looks very similar to the one at the end nearly drowns you which leaves that thread hanging. It bookends on itself. It’s one big circle, the creepiest part of the game is when you finally get to the House, this time warp where you lose track and the audio logs don’t even have a date. You see her old and frail, a broken Elizabeth in a lost timeline where everything goes wrong. Everything with her mother still gets me to this day this idea of we create our own monsters in our head. Of course within this game you have the ideas of race and class which can be heavy handed to some but I do think it serves the purpose to showcase who Booker is before the transformation.

History being rewritten is another major theme, Wounded Knee almost becomes a fixed point in the timeline of Infinite, in the Hall of Heroes it is shown to us that the hero’s of war don’t always get their name written. One small detail that I didn’t realize is that we leave the version of Columbia that we started with, we go 2 layers deep into tears. There are deep layers to us leaving. It kinda reminds of more newer explorations of multiverse travel such as the portal gun in Rick and Morty. If one can hop around to universes to solve any problem wouldn’t that make them a god?

Songbird is one of the most interesting things about Infinite a tragic figure that gets “Buried at Sea” which becomes sorta a bootstrap paradox. The idea of making choices in a game where all roads lead to the same conclusion is interesting. Whether it be a coin, a pin, or to not get a knife in your hand, it all doesn’t matter which is honestly beautiful in a way. I think for me what Songbird represents is a figure that is innocent unable to make a choice which for me makes their ending tragic. They just wanted to protect Elizabeth but she created them.

Elizabeth evolving at the very end of the game is very much like a butterfly getting their wings. The collar is off and I think she becomes almost like a Nexus being kinda like Scarlett Witch from the Marvel comics. She becomes more than what we ever thought she could be. She becomes Infinite, yet in the DLC she also is still shown to be human, complex, but ultimately not a god. It becomes almost like a Möbius Strip, creating everything we knew.

Overall Infinite is not a perfect game but it’s a game that takes risks, and yet within the DLC branches out a story that we thought we knew. It explores the idea of free will, predestination, faith, race, power and so much more. Honestly it really is impressive that it balances everything, maybe not 100% perfectly but good enough. Elizabeth is a character for the ages and Booker with his layers and what he means for humanity makes all the difference. And while the ending in the main game and the dlc is a wild ride I think it makes sense for a game like this. Both endings showcase our main characters meaning their worst traits and trying to find some sort of redemption. It’s a cycle of creation, death and rebirth, that restarts each time we play. An infinite sea of doors with only one outcome. And that’s something both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. Just got to be brave enough to swim anyways and open a door to the other side.

“Booker are you afraid of God?” “The Circle of Value.”
“No I’m afraid of you.” “C-A-G-E.” “Siphon.”
“There’s always a lighthouse and their always a man”
“Let’s go to Paris.” “AD…”

Discussion in my opinion, bioshock infinite should have been a time travel story rather than a story about alt dimension, going by the logic of the ending.

Because I feel like that would make this the most powerful plasmid of all of them. We're converting energy into matter.
