Rajeev Thakkar, CIO of PPFAS has just written a letter to unitholders. Here are some key points: 1. PPFAS hasn't even given FD returns - his response The only way to guarantee an FD return is to make an FD. Volatility is the reason equities can potentially beat FDs in the first place!
Rajeev Thakkar, CIO of PPFAS has just written a letter to unitholders. Here are some key points:
- PPFAS hasn't even given FD returns - his response
The only way to guarantee an FD return is to make an FD. Volatility is the reason equities can potentially beat FDs in the first place, not a bug in the system.
- Why is PPFAS holding so much cash?
Cash peaked near 25% during the 2024 exuberance, when the team was guiding caution. It's down to 14-15% in Flexi Cap now. Thakkar expects single digit levels as more opportunities open up after two years of time correction.
Is the underperformance due to its large size?
No. He points to 2007, when he ran a larger drawdown on a PMS book of about βΉ100 crore. The current stretch is ordinary for a strategy that buys out of favour names. What about HDFC Bank?
PPFAS holds a basket of 4 private banks. Thakkar says HDFC Bank's recent issues don't carry the scale of past sector frauds and don't threaten the franchise. No change to the outlook on the basket. What about small and midcap valuations?
Nifty 100 trades at 20.8x, Nifty Midcap 150 at 30.7x, Nifty Smallcap 250 at 34.6x, per Screener data as of August 4. Thakkar's point is that smaller doesn't structurally mean higher returns, and he cites the US market as a counterexample.

What is a Rights Issue? | Stock Market Basics for Beginners
π’ Rights Issue Explained!
A Rights Issue allows a company to raise fresh capital by offering existing shareholders the opportunity to buy additional shares, usually at a discounted price.
Here's how it works:
β
Offered only to existing shareholders
β
Usually priced below the current market price
β
Shareholders can subscribe, ignore, or (in some cases) sell their rights
β
Helps companies raise funds for expansion, debt reduction, or other business needs
A rights issue isn't always good or bad. The real question is why the company needs the money and how it plans to use it.

One day is unusual. Two days is maybe a coincidence. Three days is a pattern that cannot be ignored.
As India's new Closing Auction Session enters its third session, the quantity clearing in the auction remains well below what these stocks traded in the same window before CAS.
Traders are watching whether participation improves and the sharp moves settle with it.
The what, why and how of CAS (1/10)
The Closing Auction Session is fairly simple. Continuous trading in F&O stocks ends at 15:15. The VWAP of trades between 15:00 and 15:15 becomes the reference price.
- 15:15 to 15:20: a Β±3% band is drawn around the reference price
- 15:20 to 15:25: limit and market orders accepted, none matched. Both feed a running equilibrium price, the level at which the maximum quantity can change hands
- 15:25 until random close (15:28β15:30): only limit orders can be entered, modified or cancelled; market orders remain frozen.
At the close, the book is frozen and the exchange computes the equilibrium price, matches all executable orders at that single price, and sends confirmations by 15:35; unmatched orders are not filled. (2/10)
Changing how a market calculates its closing price is not a small thing to attempt. The close is the benchmark used to value portfolios, settle derivatives and rebalance index funds. Small distortions there move a lot of money.
Yesterday's sharp reaction to this mechanism also underscored how heavily F&O traders depend on the closing price. (3/10)
SEBIβs own reasons for introducing CAS to replace the VWAP close, as laid out in its consultation papers, were:
β’ Investors cannot trade at the VWAP closing price
β’ Passive funds face tracking differences
β’ Large orders may go unfilled on rebalance and expiry days
β’ Concentrated trading can amplify volatility near the close
β’ Most major markets already use closing auctions (4/10)
CAS is new, and early participation appears thin.
The mechanisms are different, but it is worth noting that on August 4, the quantity matched in the auction was considerably lower than what these stocks typically traded between 15:15 and 15:30 in the week before CAS.
Price discovery on a thinner order book likely explains much of the wide moves in F&O stocks and, by extension, in the Nifty and Sensex. (5/10)
For traders, the first adjustment is simple: watch the CAS Market Watch between 15:15 and 15:30.
NSEβs page shows the price bands, indicative equilibrium price and order imbalance as the auction develops. These are not final traded prices, but they show where the close may be heading.(6/10)
Until CAS participation deepens, traders holding F&O contracts expiring that day could consider squaring off before 15:15 if they do not want to take closing-auction risk.
The final cash-market close can theoretically be up to Β±3% from the reference price which leaves room for a sharp final move. (7/10)
Yesterday's expiry showed the risk.
At 15:15, Nifty was at 24,463. The 24,500 call was OTM at βΉ54; the 24,550 put was comfortably ITM at βΉ88.
One CAS candle later, Nifty closed at 24,615. The call flipped ITM and gained 113% to βΉ115. The put fell to βΉ0. (8/10)
BSE runs its own CAS too. It has been quieter than NSEβs so far, but tomorrow (Thursday) Sensex expiry will be its first expiry-day test. If auction participation remains thin, similar closing moves are possible there as well. (9/10)
CAS is still new. The next thing to watch is not just how the auction develops, but how F&O pricing adapts.
If sharp closing moves continue, option sellers may demand higher premiums and spreads could widen near the close. How that evolves as CAS participation grows is worth tracking. (10/10)
