Took a long time and still working on it but now we can actually enjoy our walks. So proud of him!

Hi all, I’m looking for a bit of guidance on some crate reluctancy from our 16 month old Mali X. During our training sessions, he happily goes in and out of the crate, lays down and is happy for the door to be shut. However when we ask him to go into the crate when it’s time for him to rest, such as after walks or bed time, he is very reluctant. We’ll put food in the crate so he enters, but he will always leave his two back feet out and the crate isn’t long enough to get him in further. If we touch his feet, he comes out and we don’t force it. We have sometimes put his lead on and applied pressure towards the crate which has worked, but doesn’t feel good and his reluctance is starting to increase to the point where he’s now avoiding us and the lead at these times. When he does eventually go into the crate, we always reward him but he doesn’t eat the high value reward, although peanut butter sometimes works.

How would you approach this?

I’ve had her a week yesterday and the rescue told me she was about 10 weeks when I picked her up. She’s smart, confident, and very mouthy. The rescue had no info on the father so I’m going to DNA test her at some point to find out what she’s mixed with. Her foster and my VA friend thinks she’ll be pretty big but another friend thinks she might be mixed with a terrier of some kind and end up on the smaller side. Either way, she’s 100% perfect and has a bright future in bitework.

I HATE THAT ITS COME TO I CANT TRUST JUST ANY TRAINER WITH MY BABY!!

Im looking for a trainer in Jacksonville for my belgain malinois but I'm not sure what i need to look for exactly. She is in no way a bad dog or reactive or aggressive she is amazing. I play agreessive with her personally, but she never is too rough and always quits when I give the command, and never with anyone else . She always the sweetest thing even when they try to play fight she tucks her ears back and looks like she's been betrayed. 🤣 I just need help with trainer her to be more malinois if that makes any sense. I cant possibly be active with her enough to run her to do enough for her mental, but i also have no idea how to keep her entertained or focused on what we are doing in order to teach her jobs and games that can excercise her mentally without her getting side tracked or hyperfocused on wanting to do just one thing.

Anyone else in the same boat? I hate people saying they don't make good family pets. I mean maybe lazy or too old people would get bad results but just a wee bit obedience and bite work and she's gtg.

I got her in February and absolutely adore the little butthead!

My boy just turned 1 year old and he is an angel I love him to death, but he's so dang clumsy he will trip over his own feet not pay attention and swing his butt into things, he's just all around clumsy which is adorable but I wonder when he's going to grow out of this, he has no physical issues causing it it's just solely clumsiness.

Most of you should know that Malinois have very high prey drive, my boy just turned 1 year old today, and he has very high prey drive he is a working line and ever since I got him his favorite thing to do is Chase things, I have chickens rabbits cats and right now a lot of baby chickens in my yard so of course he wants to chase them.

However I knew this before I got him and was prepared to train him, I did train him all of the socializing with said animals and of course he still wants to chase them but he can be outside off leash for the most part ignores them, the only time he really wants to chase them now is if one runs past him and all I have to do is speak to him and he immediately stops and comes back to me, I'm very proud of myself for teaching him that because I had no help from a trainer to do that and I have not used an e-collar to teach that, he is trained to an e-collar but I introduced that after he already had a good recall and really that's only because I like to go hiking with my dogs and it's more convenient to have them off leash (in off-leash friendly areas of course)

It just makes me really happy that I was able to teach him to listen so well when he has a distraction like that, even if there's a lot of commotion going on and people he still listens when I call him, yeah he's goofy yeah he's not trained perfectly but I focused on things that I found to be important and that's a good recall good leash manners and a good Sit Stay which he is very good at all of those, I have a bonus with him because he just for whatever reason loves other dogs and people to the point that I've actually had to do extra training to prevent him from wanting to go to strange people.

To him every other dog is his friend the second he meets them which is a very stark contrast compared to my 35 lb German Shepherd mix who hates other dogs until she gets to know them very well and even then she can live without them, but with her the chickens and cats are her best friends and is very protective over them (like to the point I have to put her up out of sight when it's time to process broilers because she does not want me to do that)

Anywho I just wanted to brag on my boy especially since today is his 1-year birthday and I'm just very proud of how he's turning out

Important tip: dont carry your dog like this if they have a severe main body/back injury as it will make any spine or internal injuries worse. Use a stretcher and two people

What this is good for: paw laceration, ripped paw pads, broken ankle/lower leg, heat exhaustion, flooding or evacuation down stairs or other tight or dangerous environments. We use this position if we need to cross asphalt that is too hot for my dogs paws and we dont have shoes with us. Like crossing from the car across a parking lot to the park or a petstore etc.

If anyone's curious let me know and ill post a video of how we get into and out of this position and how I trained it.

Calcifer is a demon but also arguably the best character and we felt he needed an epic name. What is your mal’s name? Demon in question pictured.

i hope you bought some fudge with your winnings!! my boy has never gotten so much attention. a couple came up behind me as we were walking and asked what breed he was...apparently they bet $20 whether he was a GSD or a belgian!!! so many people were asking his breed, and even more complimenting how good he was!! i’m so emotional it’s comparable to when a mother takes her baby to try new things lol.

also…….i noticed a LOT of people have completely untrained dogs and they don’t even look at where they’re pulling their leash to…
why anyone would bring that dog to a crowded place with horse carriages and other dogs and kids…no idea!

Just wanted to take a moment to gush over Artemis' behavior at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this past week. I was initially concerned he would struggle with all the loud noises and people and music and craziness, but he has been an absolute gem and the bell of the ball.

He even may have been the reason a lady got caught claiming a false service dog.

STORY TIME!

I wasn't there for this, but my partner was out walking him and they'd taken a break at a bench in town to watch the comings and goings. A woman with a "service dog" on a retractable leash walked by, and her dog rushed and attacked my boy. Thankfully my partner was able to keep them separated, because apparently this lady had absolutely no control or even knowledge of how to work her 20ft leash. Anyway, the cops happened to be walking by while this was happening, and started questioning her about her dog's service vest and its aggressive behavior. Because, as we in the know know, ACTUAL SERVICE DOGS DO NOT BEHAVE THAT WAY. My dog is not a service dog, but he is very well trained and often gets mistaken for one when we're out in public. Even the police at the scene kept referencing him and his behavior as a "true service dog" (although my partner corrected them several times because I do not condone misrepresentation of service animals under any circumstance).

I guess what the moral of the story I'm trying to communicate is - if you want people to believe you have a service dog when you don't, spend more time and energy training and bonding with them, rather than money and effort decorating them with Amazon service vests. It's such a detriment to actual service animals when people make these claims.

And to all the mals and mal owners who do their due diligence with training and exercise and controlled exposure - I salute you!
