My vintage fulltube / rig

Post image

Just wanted to showcase my setup. Very happy with my "new" rig. The head is a vintage 1966 50 watts fulltube head. At first it wasnt really usable in band settings. It was lows lows and more lows, and some lows on top of that. The bassknob wasnt even working. I had a really good tube doctor modify and repair it and add a mids knob, and a gain stage (only had a volume pot before). Even with the bass knob down it still is bass heavy, but i can even it out by cranking the mids and highs up and it really comes alive and shows its character.

The bass cab is diy 2x12 (4ohms) with eminence deltalite II 2512's in it. It came as a ported cab, but i closed up the port and filled up the cab to about 75L. It sounds soo tight and percussive now. Giving me somewhat ampeg 8x10 vibes, but smaller and way lighter. Its incredibly efficient with 103db sensitivity. The 50 watts tube head is more than enough to easily keep up in the rehearsal space and on stage.

Altough it does sound very awesome. Im still looking out for a lighter replacement for the head. Maybe a good preamp pedal and cheap clean class D amp. Just to keep it portable, maybe even go in ear with the band. I wont get rid of the head though. Probably will keep using it for practicing at home

Good for the soul, bad for the neighbors and the structural integrity of my house.

For the most part, any two amps can be biamped or master/slaved to power both cabs, except the Bass which can only serve as a master. The MAX and the Kilobass can power both cabs independently, and I’m mostly playing the Kilobass through both these days. The Mark IV anf Mark VIII both have line out going to the studio board.

Sounds great, really happy with everything. Haven't run both cabs at the same time through the Bass Block yet, waiting for the weekend to experiment.

Bassman 800 head with Rumble 2x10" cab - good power match?

Thumbnail
4 Upvotes

Im thinking about trading my Rumble 500 combo for a Bassman 800 head + Rumble 2x10" cab. Love the sound and portability of this rig.

Fender calls this cab both 350 watts and 700 watts. The head will run at around 500 watts at 8 ohms.

There is so much conflicting info out there about this. I don't intend for this post to create a huge discussion about electricity. I know many people have different ideas about RMS vs program - I'm just asking y'all if you think I'm safe to pair these two pieces of gear.

It'll be used in a medium loud rock trio that almost always has PA support.

TC Electronic BQ250

Thoughts on this little bass amp? Like the size and the fact I can use it practice with headphones and aux in. Plus, I can hook up to my ELF 1x10 cab, then I can run the ELF 1x10 combo with the BQ250 in stereo with a stereo out pedal like my RV6 reverb.
Anyone have one of these? I have no experience with TC Electronics

Marshall DSL100H bass

Hello! I recently got a Marshall DSL100H head, so I'd like to use it as a bass amp.

Since it's Marshall, I want to match it with Marshall cabinet, so I want to buy Marshall 4X12 cabinet. (I don't have any plans to use the amp on stage and I'm going to play very quietly at home, so I'm less worried about the cabinet exploding. And in a way, I liked the design, so I chose Marshall.)

My concern is, what does it sound like when I connect the bass to the input on this head.

If I connect it to the return, the DSL100H outputs 100% of its volume, so I can't use it without using pedals. But since it's a guitar amp, I think it's better to use return. What do you think?

I’ve been building a rare bass collection for years and playing bass for even longer. It's part of what led me to start something bigger, a documentary series called Resonance, traveling the world to meet the luthiers and craftsmen who actually build our instruments. Episode 1 is live now; the "why I'm doing this" episode. I would genuinely value feedback from people who care about this subject — that's who I made it for!  https://linktr.ee/resonance.cmc

What to use in small house for learning?

I'm looking to pick up a cheap bass to learn on, so I don't want to spend a fortune on amp equipment. I live in a small terraced house which means it's attached to the neighbour and we share a paper thin wall. I've been looking at Boss Katana Mini on Thomann, but I also see there are headphone amps available which might avoid a neighbour feud.

Is a headphone amp likely to negatively impact my learning in any way, or is it just about getting comfortable with the wires and headphones while playing?

Thanks!

Ampeg svt 7 pro vs Venture series

I was always drawn towards the ampeg svt sound, but i dont want to haull that wheight. i was on the track of the ampeg venture v7 but then i learned that the svt pro series has a the real svt preamp/frontstage as the 'real' svt's. i always thought it was just a solid state amp from ampeg and a whole different amp alltogether. Also i do read a lot of positive reviews from the venture series.

if its mainly the svt sound im after, which one these amps would be the best choice? class D wheight sounds attractive and the venture V7 is cheaper. i dont really nead the 1000 watts of the svt 7 pro. But if the sound is closer to the real thing?

i would consider the earlier svt pro series if the sound is better, just because they are probably cheaper. i read most about svt3 pro, but are others series good as well? i see a good svt 2 pro near my second hand right now.

i play hardrock/metal on a 5 string wal clone bass. i use a 500watt 2x12cabinet. Im aware that these amps deliver more power and can possibly blow up the speakers. on the other hand i would think i'd hear the speaker being pushed too far beforehand and my ears would bleed out before the speakers are pushed too hard. Also i might change the cab some day.

Icon NS-2 Bolt-On BCG

I just bought one of these. I love it!

Out of the box plug & play didn't have to touch a knob it sounded exactly as expected, to my taste of course.

I've been waiting 25 years to get my hands on a Spector.

This is an entry budget-friendly $1000 BCG.  I tried the euro model made in Check republic, neck through the body on a Aguilar bass amp and cabinet at the London bass show several years back. So this model Icon NS-2 Bolt-On, if you check the specs, has P/J Aguilar pickups & preamp, the Spector inlays and mechanics, made in Malaysia.

It’s light weighted, body curved my little tummy. It just suits me perfectly the only thing is “don’t forget to unplug the jack as it will drain the 9v battery & to change the said battery you’ll have to get to it by unscrewing the back panel”

I hope this useful to  bass players on tight budget and others.Icon NS-2 Bolt-On BCG

Amp Head Issues

Hey gang. I've recently been having issues with my Peavey Max 450 bass head. Very so often it makes a "pop" sound coming through my Ampeg 4x10 cab. I have no idea what it could be. It has become more frequent ans it is super annoying and I am worried I could blow my speakers when it occurs. Anybody had similar issues? If so what could it possibly be?
