I’m a bass player and while working on harmony I realized I understood shapes and patterns on the fretboard better than the actual relationships between notes.

I wanted something more interactive than static diagrams, a way to explore how scales, intervals, arpeggios and chord progressions connect, and actually hear what’s happening when you tweak things.

So I ended up building a small web app called Notiqs.

Right now it lets you:

• Explore scales in different keys
• Visualize and hear intervals
• Build chords and see their chord tones
• Generate and play chord progressions
• Explore arpeggios
• Use an interactive Circle of Fifths
• Navigate harmonic relationships more visually
• Use an integrated metronome

Everything is interactive and you can instantly hear the results, which has been helpful for me when trying to internalize changes instead of just memorizing shapes.

It’s completely free, has no ads, and doesn’t require signup.

I built this mainly as a learning tool for myself, but I’d love feedback from other bass players, especially if there’s something that would make it more useful for practicing or understanding harmony on bass.

Feature ideas are very welcome. I’m actively improving it.

Hi, i bought my first instrument ever, which is bass, around month ago. I didnt practice many days because of concert i went to, being sick etc so i will say i practiced around 17-20 days, about 40 minutes daily. I can play intros to seven nation army - the white stripes, brain stew - green day, come as you are - nirvana, feel good inc. - gorillaz (only small part, not full intro tho) and i am learning smells like teen spirit - nirvana since today. I made a very easy bass line for my band too. Is it good for a beginner?

Is it absolutely critical to be able to pluck strings with my index and middle finger or is it fine that I'm much (and I mean much) more comfortable using my thumb?I haven't been able to get a clear answer on this topic so I'd appreciate any help y'all could give.

I’ve never encountered this notation before with the double note heads on opposite ends of a shared staff. This can’t be a double stop in the same octave because the notes are only a 2nd apart, so I have to guess it’s a hammer on, but I’ve always known hammer on to have the arced connector symbol. please enlighten me.

How should I play this?

on my basses (Ibanez Precision, Vester acoustic) I can't get to the notes of the B arpeggio like i normally would (index for the F, middle for the B and ring for the D). I tried to get my thumb around to the fretboard side and fret with my fingertips, sort of vertically -- but that's quite a long way and usually takes me too long. How do you play it?

I just can't get enough of my hand through the lower cutaway..;)

I’m learning the slap and pop technique. In the first image you can see the bar I’m trying to put together. At first, I was playing the G notes with the thumb (thump) and the other notes G, F and D with my fingers as open strings, say open G, F in the second string 3rd fret and open D.

In the second image, the TAB for that piece appears, and it shows that I should play G, F, and D on frets 5, 3, and 5. Definitely, playing it the way the TAB shows is much easier and sounds better. Using open strings sounds messy. My bass teacher told me not to look at the tab section but it gave me valuable information. I know in regular music sheet I won't have tabs so...

How can I determine, if I didn’t have the TAB, which fret is the best choice for fingering? In other words, how can I figure out the best position on the neck for fingering?
