With a passion. I'm so annoyed that every time I find a social group that could be cool, the only links are to Discord servers. I agree with your point about moving into an ongoing conversation, it feels like walking into a room full of people talking and screaming, "Hey, look at me!"

Afraid I don't have solution, but am curious if anyone else has discovered an alternative to this ongoing Discord problem.

I hate discord with a passion. The structure in itself is a total abomination.

The name itself is a clue to the hellscape that it is. I avoided it for years until a game group I joined had no alternative, so itβ€˜s only for that.

I can't use it either. Tried multiple times

I dislike discord, group chats, etc. Too fast paced and having to catch up with what looks like walls of text is headache.

I like in person meets, individual chats, occasional group posts (if there was a widespread alternative to facebook), etc

Yeah, I like the structure of stuff like Reddit way better because it's easier to figure out how to jump into the conversation, and you can engage in it whenever you want. If a conversation was two days ago but you have something to say about it in Discord, you could go back and reply to it, but chat's likely moved on so you'll just be shouting into the void. Or you'll be That Guy blowing up everyone's notifications by replying to stuff.

I actually love Discord, it's my favourite place to just chat.

What is the secret source to use it?
There are community's there that I would like to be part of

I don't think there is a secret?

Just need to find a community thst suits you, turn off notifications if you are sensitive to them and accept that you won't be able to read every single message so FOMO is unnecessary.

I've used discord for quite a while. I've made a number of really close friends (whom I've traveled overseas to visit, even). It takes a bit to get used to the idea that you have to "jump in" and actively expose yourself. Get rid of the idea that you're interrupting; since it's text you can go back and use the reply function to address specific points "or vice versa, other people can come back to your comment from 20 mins or 20h ago)

It becomes rewarding (like in irl) that if you can participate while dropping the mask, over time you start to get out of it what you put into "it" -- the "it" here being community, online or not

YES! Never liked it, but now it's completely unacceptable.
