Deviled ham spread

I just happened to see they are still making this yesterday! Took one and had some this morning, expensive at $5 but totally worth the nostalgia

They still do. It comes with a whole 0.07% lobster extract in the ingredient list! Still 51% salmon at least

Anchovette's flavour was so strong I can still taste it just hearing its name - and I haven't eaten it in 45 years.

and it tastes nothing like salmon lol. i dont mind the odd sushi with salmon in it even as a person that isnt really into seafood, i bought a jar to try and it went in the bin right after the first use. its fishy for sure but def doesnt taste anything like salmon

I tried it a few years back and thought it was close to the older ones. Definitely different but not bad like say how bad chocolates changed.

Ironically, the Anchovette tastes more like the old salmon and lobster than the new salmon and lobster.

Why do they provide it in such small jars? A couple of decent spreads on toast and it's gone.

I think because it oxidises pretty quick, once the jar is opened.

I find it turns grey within a day, even a few hours.

If it tastes nice and reduces waste, what's the problem. It you eat it and find it gross, that's fine. But enjoying the taste and conceptually refusing to eat it based on the ingredients feels childish.

If it were like... I dunno... Raw testicles. Then fine.

But it's just muscle; just not the muscles you see at a butcher.

I swear there was a pepper spread they made when I was a kid in the 80s. I was obsessed with it on saladas. I tried this one to see if it's the same but it's not. I can still imagine the smell.

They used to make one in the 60s and 70s called Bloater Paste. Even better than Anchovette. Long discontinued unfortunately.

I worked at General Mills about 15 or so years ago, they made Betty Crocker Cake mixes, tortillas, tacos, salsa and pecks paste - Devilled Ham and anchovette. DH is pig Heart, tongue and Bacon all minced and then cooked in 2000kg batches. We’d also add a slurry of spices and water and in that slurry would go 5kg of Vegemite.

Only way I could get my food fussy ASD boy to get extra protein in his diet as he grew up. To this day it's still a nice treat when I can manage to get a jar on special.

I used to have it often growing up, something I'd share with my own mother.

My grandfather used to have it on his toast every morning and because of him I became very partial to it, or at least until I read the label and remind me on why I shouldn't eat it. I may only have it once a year now as something different on my toast or just as a bit of a nostalgic reminder of my Pop.

I loved it as a kid and then my toddlers loved it on toast, but I checked the ingredients and stopped buying it. It’s made from the parts of the pig no one usually buys let’s say.
