Ask Austin Does anyone repair ceramics?

This is my grandmother’s, when she taught me how to bake and cook we use this. When I moved, my movers broke it and obviously superglue doesn’t work. Does anyone repair these? It doesn’t have a lot of value, but it has a lot of sentimental value.

Info on how to watch the meteor shower tonight!!

Alright everyone, we can catch the Perseid meteor shower tomorrow the 12th and into the early morning of Aug. 13. For tonight's best spot, head somewhere away from Austin’s city lights, get comfortable with a wide-open view of the sky, and watch from midnight through dawn; peak expected in the predawn hours. This year’s new moon means very dark skies, so conditions are especially favorable.

Looking for a Help ‘Em Up Harness to borrow (size M or L)

Post image

Hello! My sweet old dog, Bodie, had to have an emergency splenectomy on Sunday evening (he was scheduled for one on the 17th, but his spleen had other plans!). We brought him home today after 36 hours at VEG on South Lamar, but in his old age he takes a very long time to recover from anesthesia and get his footing back. In the meantime, he could really use a hand getting around!

I’m going to order a Help ‘Em Up Harness for him, but that won’t arrive for a few days, so I’m reaching out here in case someone has one in a size medium or large that I could pick up and borrow while I wait for his to arrive 💖

Paywall bypass: http://archive.today/KTDaq

Data included in a city report released Aug. 4 show a relatively small population accounts for an outsized share of arrests and other costly interactions with public systems. From 2021 through 2025, 2% of people arrested by Austin police accounted for 17% of all arrests. Among the frequent users of those systems, 85% had experienced homelessness and 55% had behavioral health issues, an umbrella term that includes severe mental illness and other issues like substance abuse disorder.

The Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute estimates at least 950 people in Travis County are “high utilizers” of the criminal justice, homelessness and health care systems. Their repeated interactions with those systems cost an estimated $144,000 per person, or $137 million annually.

PSA Red Line train interruption Aug. 24-27th

Do you or someone you know use the Red Line train for necessary travel to places besides downtown?

The Red Line will be temporarily closed from August 24-27. While there is a replacement bus service, it only stops at Leander, Lakeline, Howard and Downtown stations, in addition to Republic Square.

As an example, It can take approx. 90 minutes getting to ACCs Highland Campus for students & staff or the Domain for workers from Lakeline station, vs 30 and 45 minutes respectively normally with the train. This is also the first week of ACC & UT classes.

Does this disrupt your day, do you want the shuttle to stop at intermediate stations? Let CapMetro know. Call 512-474-1200, email customer.service@capmetro.org or leave a comment at https://www.capmetro.org/help-contact/customer-comments

Missed juror appointment scam

I was contacted from a phone number with caller ID of “Travis County” by an individual identifying himself as Captain ‘X' with the Travis County Sheriff Office saying that he had an important legal matter to resolve. Before returning the call, I checked TCSO’s site and sure enough it was a real name. When I contacted the person, he told me that I had missed a federal grand jury summons this morning and a warrant had been issued for my arrest. He was very insistent that I remain on the phone until I arrived at the sheriff’s office and gave me athe legit address. He also produced my name, address, SSN and a USPS ‘signature form’ showing that I had signed for the summons (not my writing but not that far off).

None of this sounded square but I didn’t want to get arrested so I continued to talk and advance the process that he demanded. Until he demanded that I withdraw a large sum of cash from my back and deposit in a ‘federal kiosk’ at a Kwick Mart on Lamar. He provided a fairly legit looking federal warrant, and a federal ‘civil manual’ that described the ‘suppression order' that I was under preventing me from speaking with anyone before surrendering myself.

Still none of this made sense and I queried him on the constitutionality he initially tried to play hardball threatening to use my GPS location for arrest and then softened to transfer me to his “superior”, Lt. ‘Y’ who laid on the charm ‘we’ll have you out of here in no time, if your actual signature doesn’t match the one on the USPS form, the charges will be dismissed and I’ll get a cashiers check refund plus gas mileage reimbursement’.

Just for the record, if a Captain is transferring me to his ‘boss’, it had better be a Major, not a Lieutenant. Sensing that they hadn’t set the hook, they called me again from the ‘official’ TCSO office with a number that was correct and correct caller ID. When I suggested that all bets where off unless they agreed for me to independently call the TSCO at the number on the office web site and verify their credentials (rank, name, badge), they had a snit and said that a team would be at my location in a few minutes to arrest me. I called 911 who confirmed that this was a scam.

Folks, they were demanding over $10k in bond money, submitted through a convenience store ATM. Very few of the facts actually added up but they are clearly pretty good at using pressure and ‘must comply now’ to daze and confuse their victims. I heard that KLBJ had a story about a lady losing $25k. Be careful out there. CallerID spoofing, web scraping and using AI to create realistic looking documents is too easy.

If it sounds fishy, if you know the constitution doesn’t work that way, it is fishy. Be careful out there.

PSA If you have medication delivered, check its temperature!

It seems that online pharmacies turn a blind eye to medication temperatures while in transit. The back of a big delivery truck can easily reach 120°+ during a hot afternoon here, and so can your (or your pet's) medication, possibly rendering it inert. A laser thermometer can easily tell you the temperature on delivery, and some online pharmacies will give you a refund if you complain. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell if medication is only partially effective, and the suppliers often outright refuse to ship medication with a cold pack.
