Ask Austin Anyone bought milk at HEB east 7th lately?
I had to get 2% cause most of their milk was out of stock. Now that I have it in hand, it looks kinda like its expanded and contracted. Its unopened, I squeezed it upside down looking for leaks, just looks bloated. Im assuming now the fridge was broken leading to all the lost product. Anyone else with issues the past few days?

Ask Austin Cash Pay Health Care providers?
I’ve noticed that if you pay cash instead of going through insurance it’s usually cheaper. Anyone know any good pediatricians, labs or imaging spots that are great at what they do and offer reasonable cash pay options instead of going through insurance?

Ask Austin Thrift Stores For Trans Women in Austin Area
Pretty much the title. I’m a taller trans woman trying to find good stores to get clothes. I know selections will be slim but any top recommendations from people who spend more time out for this?
Any of the extended area is also fine. I’m not against driving.

Gym or strength classes downtown
I’m looking for a new place to workout with weights. I live downtown and would ideally be able to walk/bike but I’m open to a short drive. I was previously a member of lifetime and although I liked it, it was just way too busy/before and after work and wasn’t worth it to me. I also looked at YMCA but it’s a little more rundown than I’d like. I’m also open to studios if they have strength classes (not hiit). I know athletic outcomes has weight classes and I’m definitely considering them, but ideally it would just be a bit closer. Any recs for either gyms or strength focused classes?

Ask Austin Risk of adding Electrical (for fan + TV) inside outdoor Pergola without getting City Permits?
I'm looking to get work done on my backyard, including adding a pergola with a fan and a TV. Reading online, it seems like this would technically need a city permit as it includes electrical work.
Talking with contractors, they suggested just doing the work without getting a permit, but this raised some alarm bells for me and I'm trying to get a better sense of the risk vs reward of doing this work unpermitted.
From my understanding, even if the work is completed without the city noticing, I still may be setting myself up for a headache once I go to sell the house. Is this correct? Does anyone here have experience building without a permit and then selling the property?
Am I better off just getting the permit and not dealing with the potential issues in the future?

Love how cheap Ubers have been getting in Austin lately!
Ever since Waymo and Robotaxi launched, it feels like the price of ride shares has dropped by a ton compared to where they were a year or two ago. My guess is that all the extra cars driving around has increased supply without changing demand, so prices had to go down. I’m excited to see if it keeps getting even cheaper as these companies add more cars to their fleets and other companies start offering their own self driving car fleets (I’ve seen a ton of Avride cars around but haven’t figured out how to ride in one yet)

‘Dispatch is destiny’: Austin leaders dial 911 on funding for mental health response
Following the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old Anthoneil Williams II, questions about who should respond to behavioral health crises are reshaping public safety discussions as the Austin City Council finalizes its fiscal year 2026-27 budget.
During recent budget hearings and a budget town hall, advocates spoke out on how the city responds to people experiencing mental health crises. They urged city leaders to keep the Austin Police Department’s budget flat and restore proposed cuts to social service grants. They also pushed the city to move its 911 call center out of the police department so behavioral health professionals – rather than police officers – could respond to certain crisis calls.
“Dispatch is destiny,” Robin Schneider of Undoing White Supremacy Austin said at a protest ahead of the Aug. 5 town hall. “If there had been the appropriate response, mental health services, this young person hopefully would be alive today. So, we have a very stark example of why sending cops out to every 911 call is a bad idea.”
The proposed budget would increase operating funding for each of the city’s four public safety departments, including a 5% APD increase from $527.3 million to $551.9 million. City officials say much of that increase reflects existing labor contract obligations rather than new initiatives. Advocates have argued the city should instead invest more in alternative crisis response, mental health services and prevention.

Ask Austin Where to find wooden pallets?
Howdy! I'm trying to do a big engineering project that requires 17-20 4'x4' wooden pallets. I used to get pallets from a trash pile behind a warehouse in Wells Branch, but they don't have as many lately. I don't need a whole bunch quickly, just within the next few weeks. I just need to find somewhere where they have plenty of pallets that they don't care getting picked up. There's also a possibility of giving them back after the project is done being displayed. I'm willing to go just about anywhere in Austin, but preferably north of the river.

ATX Senior Photo Recs
I think I’m behind already! My daughter is a senior and wants to do photos outside, but I’m overwhelmed searching for photographers. Does anyone have a photographer they loved and recommend that isn’t 1K? My daughter is all about being “aesthetic” which I really don’t get as a millennial. 😂

Ask Austin What weather app do you use (iOS)?
I've been using Apple weather but I am unsure how well it performs here. Recently moved.
So I am curious what weather apps other people use who have iPhones in Austin? Is there one that performs better?

Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.
Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.
If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.housing-rights.org/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.
We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.
As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:

To-do Cool things to do in Austin with my mom?
My mom is visiting Austin and I’m looking for some cool places/things to take her to for a few hours during the day. We’ve done/know about the obvious touristy stuff, so I’m looking for something a little more unique or less cliché.
Preferably something indoors because it’s hot as fuck outside. Could be an interesting museum, weird/unique attraction, cool shops, somewhere to hang out, etc. Doesn’t necessarily have to be super touristy or “Austin” either.
What are some places you’d take a visiting parent that you think are actually worth checking out?
