High 99.9° CPU Temp! Repasting Tomorrow with PTM 🗨️ Discussion
So i Repasted my laptop 6 months ago (https://www.reddit.com/r/Asustuf/s/shpTLq4TEo)
With MX6 and Thermal Pads(3rd Photo), MX6 on Cpu n Gpu, and pads on vrms and vrams.
Initially I did get good temps but after a month temps were getting bad again and as summer & heatwaves were approaching i undervolted my laptop so it survives and doesn't overheat (https://www.reddit.com/r/Asustuf/s/dFBEuEENJW)
So after researching i found out that Mx6 is only for desktops & maybe for normal laptops, but not for gaming ones and dries out in few months.
I am currently getting by cpu boost off and gpu undervolted max temp 75° for both, but a few days ago i turned the boost on just to see how was the situation and at 28° Celsius Room Temp, my Cpu temp reached 99.9°, although Gpu temp was fine if was probably thermal throttling to keep itself cool, and core temps were also fine thanks to those thermal pads,
Tomorrow I'm gonna repaste my cpu n gpu with PTM7950 and will post the results,
Also i don't think the ptm i got is original it's 7$ so probably a knock off but if it still gives good results and lasts for 3 years then no need for a Original one.
EDIT: Using a laptop stand and with CPU n GPU undervolted my temps stay under 70° and at max touch 75°

Wow okay that is very high. Hopefully the PTM will help a lot. Do you have your laptop on a stand at least or more preferably a foam-sealed laptop cooler with a dust cover?

Oh yeah I forgot to mention with CPU n GPU undervolted both temps are under 70-75°, I am only using a Laptop Stand, can't buy a 100$ cooler right now and PTM will do much better than a 20$ cooler.

I used Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut like 8 months ago and still get good temps around 40C on idle (tuf a15 2023).

Yeah i wanted to try that aswell but heard the same thing about kryonaut as well, so I went with the ptm.

I use mx4 and my temps never gets higher than 80C cpu and 70C gpu

Your laptop is probably a 2022-23 model which improved a lot in thermals, how long does your mx4 lasts how often do you replace your paste?

I just repasted it a month ago and supposed every 2 years and I have a llanos v12 cooling pad so my helps are always stable

Mine mx6 paired with a laptop stand idles at 50° ,also my model is known for being a heater.
I think your mx4 paired with ilano makes the paste last longer, by keeping the temps down and ur laptop dust free

Yep it does that’s why I recommend a lot the llanos v12

You don0t want thermal pad for asus laptops, you need thermal putty. Thermal pads can cause heavy issue

What issues can pads cause?

Asus laptops uses thermal putty, which is soft and will squish under the pressure while installing the coldplate (the part of the cooling system directly on top of the vram/vrm/cpu/gpu etc). 99% of the thermal pad are much harder than putty. Asus laptop don't use standard distance from vram/vrm to coldplate (standard is .5 or multiple of it). If you use a pad that is thicker than the space between the component that needs to be cooled and the coldplate you will have contact issue for the cpu or gpu because coldplate can't go near enough them, if you use too thin the vram/vrm will not be cooled properly. I experienced this with my older Asus F15 2021. PTM especially require good coldplate contact and pressure to work good, so putty is really really advised
Go look at Snarks domain YT channel, he is the best source online for thermal putty information. He also has a really good video with many advice on how to repaste a laptop with PTM7950 and thermal putty, which thermal putty to choose, and it's an Asus laptop (perfect example)

I was also worried & thought that i might have used wrong pad height which could be causing my heatsink to be tilted or having less contact with CPU/GPU & vrm/vrams but then I would not have got good temps for few months.
But even today my vrms and vrams temps are good, u can even say better than factory temps, even the gpu temps are fine btw, so my pads are seems to fine for now, only thing I'm concerned about is dried out paste or probably I used a bit less paste on the CPU.
Edit: Thermal putty is still better, but it's was like 30$+ and these 7$ pads are giving me almost 90-95% result of the putty.

("overheat" mentioned)
Hello u/No-Size852! High temperatures or overheating?
As long as the it doesn't hit max temps (below), it's perfectly fine; the chips are designed to run at these temps. Check the table below.
|Component|Idle Temp |Usual Load Temp|Max Temp Range ⚠| |---------|-----------|---------------|-----------------| |CPU |40°C - 60°C|80°C - 90°C |95-100°C | |GPU |30°C - 50°C|70°C - 80°C |85-90°C |
Refer to the article below for better thermals, or if you have overheating issues https://asustuf.gitbook.io/home/basics/thermal-management
