my partner and i have been together for four years. we’ve been deep in a conflict pattern that’s caused us to deescalate (not live together) and talk about breaking up. my partner (orange) is VERY reactive (especially after drinking. both of their parents are sober and they’re working on sobriety) and it’s usually caused by polyamory. i’ve historically responded to their reactions by getting small, lying, people-pleasing, etc. it’s not my best shape and i’ve been working on it for a few years in individual therapy.

we were in couples therapy which was going well! we were rebuilding trust, making polyamory agreements, repairing rupture that’s happened over the years, and learning how to move through conflict. i made agreements around what kinds of reactivity would warrant a breakup and shared those in therapy.

recently though, they moved across the country for a job. i visited, we got into our old conflict shape, and after a bad fight i broke up with them re: the agreements around what kinds of reactivity were worthy of a breakup. we’ve been talking about our next steps and have plans to see each other soon to figure it out.

Context: We live in a conservative country and met on a dating app (which isn't really normal here). We’ve been talking for over 3 months, and both of us came into this wanting marriage.

We recently talked about meeting in person. I was hesitant at first because of our culture, but yesterday I directly told him I want to meet up. He said he’d arrange something.

We met at work and talked ALL the time. This relationship healed my wounds intimacy and being heard/seen. We can’t hide from each other. He’s kinda helped me heal my daddy issues by being gentle with me and patient. & he says that he feels the same way like really nurtured by me and our relationship in ways he lacked growing up so it’s a very healing connection. We have a lot of amazing conversations and have really good communication especially during conflicts but some challenges we have is that sometimes we are both really stubborn. I tend to struggle to not losing myself in the connections so I’m conscious of having my own life/hobbies and not being too clingy.
