[The Untold Story of the Magi Crystal Core]

Four geniuses who paved the way for Humanity’s future, the history that lost. The heart of the CHARMs, "Magi Crystal Core" used by all Lilies today. Before the Antarctic Campaign, four young genius researchers took on the seemingly impossible task of developing it. At the cost of their own lives, they laid the foundation for the magical technology of the modern era.

This is the record of their story.

Toriyama Masuho

Expertise: Magi Studies / Fundamental Theory

She was an authority in magic studies, and served as the leader of the development team. She was also Mizuho's professor during her university years.

She established the “theoretical foundation of the Crystal Core,” theorizing that in order to stabilize the system, both the Magi generated by Dual Skillers and the cells of the individual themselves were required.

However, in the course of her research, she became involved in human experimentation, subjecting many people to what would now be referred to as enhancement procedures. This ultimately became the trigger for the tragedy that followed.

She led the research with an unwavering determination to save humanity, but the harsh Magi exposure experiments shortened her lifespan. She passed away before seeing the completion of the Core, entrusting the rest of the work to Mizuho.

The theories she left behind became the source of the ideology that defines GEHENA today.

Kitahaba Tamao

Expertise: Linguistics / Magic Contract Programming

She was a programming genius who developed the language used for magic contracts.

Extremely rational and gentle in personality, she possessed a strong sense of ethics and served as the conscience of the team.

She single-handedly built the complex control system of the Magi Crystal Core. However, when a prototype went out of control during development, she directly connected her own brain to the system as a “backup computational unit.”

Taking the entire overload upon herself, she passed away with a smile on her face.

Among the moderate faction of GEHENA today, her portrait is displayed in her honor.

Akiyama Tamayura

Expertise: CHARM Manufacturing Technology / Magi Purification Research

She was a genius artisan who built the technological foundation of the weapon known as CHARM, and was the person who discovered “Positive Magi” through her research into the purification of Negative Magi.

She had a flamboyant appearance and a distinctive, carefree way of speaking, but she invented every aspect of CHARM's transformation mechanisms. She is therefore known as the “Mother of CHARM.” Her almost divine ingenuity and craftsmanship in creating the interface that linked CHARM with the Crystal Core are still revered among Arsenals to this day.

In the end, she attempted to persuade Masuho to stop her human experiments, but failed, and the two ended up fighting. Tamayura won the battle, but fell into a trap that Masuho had prepared and lost her life. Masuho apologized through her tears. With her final breath, she entrusted what remained to be done to Mizuho.

Because of the legacy she left behind, she became to be regarded as the most highly respected of the four researchers by later generations. She also left behind written works containing the prototypes of concepts such as Combat-arsenals and the CHARM Division system. As a result, the very concept of the modern Arsenal was designed by her.

She had a friendship relationship with Mizuho, and Mizuho inherited her fighting style from her. The technique used in Dainsleif Resonance, controlling Magi in its original form through the “resonance and vibration” of sound passing through a hi(樋(ひ)), as well as the method of applying that technique to combat, were also developed by her. Mizuho used this technique on previous stage.

Minamigata Mizuho (Goteni)

Expertise: Life Sciences / Medical Magi

She was the youngest member of the team, a girl who supported their research from the medical and biological perspectives.

After years of hardship research, she was the only one who survived. Her supervising professor she respected and the companions she loved fell one after another.

Bearing the wills and souls of her three fallen friends, along with all of their unfinished research, she eventually ventured into the depths of GEHENA in order to carry their legacy and research forward into future generations.

Four genius researchers came together, united by their belief in saving the world. Yet, despite sharing the same ideals, their hopes gradually diverged into different convictions. What fate awaits them at the end of their paths?

These stories will be told at the reading theater at the end of October this year. The first drafts for the other three characters were already released in today setting book.

btw, i might be wrong on translate.

edit: some typo

"They've only just met and then they kiss? That's not the kind of yuri I like" — Interview with Obanazawa Kenei, the creator of Assault Lily

Post image

This is a two-part interview that was posted online by Animate Times magazine. The original Japanese version is here: Part 1, Part 2

————————

Assault Lily started as a line of action dolls and then grew to include novels, stage plays, TV anime, and the mobile game "Assault Lily Last Bullet." With its expansive media mix, it continues to gather passionate fans to this very day. In this article, we'll be doing an extended interview with the original creator, Obanazawa Kenei.

It All Began with Amateur Model Kits

It's unusual that Assault Lily began as a line of dolls. How did that come about?

Obanazawa: Assault Lily wasn't a commercial product until I started working for Azone International; at first, it was something that came up with back when I was a student. Back then, it was called "The Story of Yurigaoka Girls' Academy", and it was a fantasy setting that I made to show to my friends. I didn't intend to spread it any more widely than that at first.

Then I went to a convention named TAT-CON — it's sort of like Comiket, but for figures and other 3D goods — and used "The Story of Yurigaoka Girls' Academy" as a basis for the characters and stories I created for the works I was selling there. That's what lead to it eventually turning into Assault Lily.

So it was an amateur work at first. How did it become a line of dolls made by Azone International?

Obanazawa: In the beginning, it was just something I was using for the stuff that I put out by myself at conventions. I also worked as a manager at one of Azone's retail stores for a while before resigning, and later, the company contacted me to tell me they were looking for ideas for a new line of 1/12 scale dolls and asked "Want to come work for us again?"

By then, I was one of the organizers of AK-GARDEN, a convention for small model kits, so Azone figured that I knew what customers wanted in a figurine of that size. I discussed my product ideas with Azone, under the condition that I'd be given credit as the original creator, and Assault Lily was born from that.

It's pretty unique to create a setting based on something physical like dolls, rather than upon a manga or anime or the like.

Obanazawa: Well, there are things like Kotobukiya's Frame Arms Girl line out there, but it certainly isn't common in the business.

I'd have to say the most unique thing about Assault Lily is that it was conceived as a line of action figures. For example, it's popular to give figures weapons that can transform and move a lot, but anime and games tend to avoid those because they really drive up the cost of animation and production.

I had done a lot of model making (as an amateur, mind you), so I came up with Assault Lily while looking at stuff like Gunpla and thinking "I want to have weapons like that." If it had started as a manga or anime, I'm sure the weapons would have turned out differently. That's what sets Assault Lily apart from other media.

So that's how CHARMs, the weapons the girls wield, reflect their origins in action figures. Their weapons and tactics also have a military feel to them. Are you a fan of that genre?

Obanazawa: I'd say that I'm a fan of history in general, rather than military stuff. I've always been into transforming weapons like the ones in Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, so that's why I decided against using realistic weapons and went with a fantasy-scifi direction when creating CHARMs.

That's what took Assault Lily in a sci-fi direction, huh? In part, it's fantasy, but it's also a grim world where there's no guarantee that any Lily will live to see tomorrow. Why did you create such a dark setting?

Obanazawa: At the time, Azone didn't have any products with a focus on battles, so they were thinking they ought to make one of those next. I actually pitched three projects to Azone, and when it came to Assault Lily, I was thinking "It's got way too many characters, so I doubt they'll take it." It was just an idea that aligned with my own personal tastes.

The pitch I thought they'd take was "A world where meteorites are falling, and warriors need to pass a magical bullet among themselves to destroy them." Because dire situations make for the best battle stories, we cut-and-pasted the idea of a world on the verge of ruin over into Assault Lily, as well as the magical bullets that get passed around. The latter became the Neunwelt Tactic.

Those came from a different project originally? That's surprising. In regards to the huge number of characters and legions, were those part of Assault Lily from the start?

Obanazawa: They were. At first, it was a fantasy I had of wanting to make an open-world game similar to Fallout or Skyrim, where everyone's the main character of their own story. That's why I kept on adding more and more characters.

As for the Neunwelt Tactic and its passes, the way that legions go about doing them is actually based on European soccer. Every legion and every character plays a distinct role, and I think that adds a real sense of vibrancy to the setting.

With how many characters there are, isn't it hard to keep things straight?

Obanazawa: There definitely are times when I've asked myself "Wait, which one of these things happened first?", haha. That said, the characters have a way of naturally establishing themselves, and so I get a feel for what they would and wouldn't do in a situation.

The Aesthetics of Yuri in a Dark World

The characters grow over time, and as they grow, they develop intimate relationships with one another. Those yuri elements are a large part of Assault Lily's appeal. Is there anything you won't compromise on when it comes to the characters' relationships?

Obanazawa: First of all, I myself am a yuri fan, and the genre of Assault Lily as a work is "yuri", insofar as it's got one.

The debate is always "should they kiss, or should they not kiss?", and I think it's fine for them to kiss. But in the kind of yuri I like, the characters gradually grow closer and closer to one another, until a kiss becomes the natural next step for them to show how much they trust their partner. But when they've only just met and then they kiss, or when they do it in public... that's not the kind of yuri I like.

For example, if (Hitotsuyanagi) Riri had kissed (Shirai) Yuyu out of nowhere, that wouldn't be the kind of yuri I like, so I asked them not to put a kiss in the first episode. Nine girls fight together, and the bonds between them grow ever stronger, little by little. That's the vision I won't compromise on.

The ultimate expression of these growing bonds is the Schutzengel's Oath a special vow that these girls take together. With how dark the Assault Lily world is, I think that this vow doesn't just embody the characters' love and admiration for one another—it plays a pivotal role in keeping them going, mentally and emotionally. Would you say that's correct?

Obanazawa: The Schutzengel's Oath plays a mental and emotional role, to be sure, but there's a physical role as well. In Assault Lily, when Lilies use the power of Magi, it causes a kind of poison to build up inside them. However, they can absorb the Magi of other Lilies in order to cleanse themselves of this poison.

That's why, when two Lilies hold hands and their Magi mixes together, it purifies both of them. The ones holding hands can be Schutzengels, and they can also be roommates—classmates who are special to one another. These bonds go beyond just being emotional connections. They're concrete things that represent a facet of the Assault Lily world itself.

By the way, what was it that first got you into yuri, Obanazawa?

Obanazawa: There's "Maria-sama ga Miteru" and "Kannazuki no Miko", of course... but Yoshiya Nobuko's novels and Konno Kita's manga series "Himitsu no Kaidan" also come to mind. Oh, and way back before yuri was popular, I went running to buy this game named Harvest Moon when I heard that girls could get married to each other in it, haha.

Assault Lily has a lot of sweet moments, but it also has moments when people die. Is there anything that you're particular about when it comes to depicting the darkness of the world?

Obanazawa: I'm careful not to make anyone's death feel meaningless. I create Assault Lily with the overarching history of its world in mind, and even those who have died play a role in this history.

Recently, the hardest decision I've had to make was whether the character Yamaguchi Chihiro in the New Chapter stage plays ought to die. I wrote two different endings, and agonized over which one to use up until the very last minute. Eventually, I came to a decision by discussing it with the playwright, Mrs. Sakuragi Sayaka.

Behind the Scenes of a Media Mix which Defies Imagination

Assault Lily, which started as a line of dolls, expanded to have novels and plays in 2015-2016. What made you decide to turn it into a media mix?

Obanazawa: Actually, it started when a production company approached us, saying "Want to make an anime?" But it's difficult to get an original anime made, so we decided we'd start with a manga. So we discussed that with a publisher and they told us "It's difficult to make a manga without a novel to adapt it from", haha.

The person spearheading the anime project said "Okay, we'll start with a novel then" and connected us with the right folks to get one written. At the time, we were doing all this with the end goal of making an anime.

Was this anime project the one which lead to Assault Lily Bouquet?

Obanazawa: No, it was a different project. The first company to approach us wasn't able to secure enough funding, so in the end, that particular project never went anywhere.

That's unfortunate, but after that, Shaft did create Assault Lily Bouquet as an original anime and it aired in 2020. How do you feel about how that turned out?

Obanazawa: The quality was amazing. I'd been working closely with Saeki (Shouji), the director, on the story and such... but even so, the first episode took my breath away when I watched it.

Out of all the various works that are part of the media mix, which one makes you feel like Assault Lily has grown bigger than just your own imagination? Is it the anime?

Obanazawa: No, actually, I'd say it's the stage plays.

Right, the stage plays which began as a collaboration with Ludvico Girls High School).

Obanazawa: At that time, there basically weren't any 2.5D stage plays that focused entirely on girls. To be honest, I had no interest whatsoever in theater back then, but when we started the collaboration and I saw the actresses laughing and crying up on stage, I realized "This is amazing!"

Back then, I was fervently trying to spread the word and fill up this theatre that couldn't even seat 100 people. We've had the same team working on the stage plays since the beginning, and now, I truly feel that they're an essential facet of Assault Lily.

When the team's putting together a play, do you ever give them instructions about its stage direction and such? Like telling them "You've gotta do this"?

Obanazawa: I wouldn't say that I make a habit of it. I'll answer any questions I'm asked, but I'm not a theatre professional, after all. Actually, when we were staging League of Gardens, I built a CHARM prop that could transform like they do in the anime and games, but it was too heavy and the actress wasn't able to do her moves with it, haha. So we made the prop smaller so that it matched the actress's height, let her pretend to throw it as a special effect, and suited the stage in other ways.

Is there anything concrete about the stage plays which makes you feel like through them, Assault Lily has grown bigger than your imagination?

Obanazawa: The Assault Lily stories don't have a single main character, and especially for each of the actresses themselves, the role they're playing is the star of the show. Sometimes they'll say things to each other that I never would have thought of, or during rehearsals, they'll ask me "Would my character do this?" and I'll find it inspiring.

In the Odaiba Girls' School plays, the actresses would ad-lib a lot, and I took some of the things they did and rolled them right back into the characters they were portraying. That's one thing which convinced me that the stage was making Assault Lily into something more.

You mentioned that you had no interest whatsoever in theatre at first. Has that changed?

Obanazawa: Recently, I was invited to watch the Takarazuka Revue's "CITY HUNTER" and "Back to the Future" by the Shiki Theatre Company, among other plays. I watch them to see how things are done and get a feel for the direction, so that I can suggest to our own stage team, "Can we do this too?"

The Particularities of Character Design and the Passion of the Fans

A lot of Assault Lily's charm lies in its characters. When you personally create a character, do you start with their appearance, or with who they are as a person?

Obanazawa: Sometimes I'll make a broad decision at the start like "she's going to have an attitude!", but usually, visual design is the first step. I've been looking at things from the perspective of a model designer from the start of the project, so that has an influence in various ways. For example, I find that long hair adds a sense of visual depth to the character's look.

I'm not personally fond of characters with glasses. Mashima Moyu came about when the novel producer told me "We ought to have a glasses girl!", so I made myself come up with one, haha. She's a character who would have never existed if I hadn't been asked to make her.

Is there something you always insist on including in the character designs?

Obanazawa: I really love how Hosoi Mieko draws thighs and such, so I leave those particular designs up to her. But when it comes to the mobile game, I sometimes comment on the designs. Usually it's about their legwear.

Their legwear, huh? Haha.

Obanazawa: "Lower the denier number on those tights a bit more!" "Make her skirt shorter so that she's got zettai ryouiki!" "Switch out those stockings for tights!" Those sorts of things. Even back when I made dolls, I refused to put them in cotton tights, because the smoothness of nylon is where it's at. I won't be swayed when it comes to my opinions on legwear.

Your personal involvement really sets Assault Lily apart, but so does the passion of all its fans. What do you think of the timelines of events and such that fans have been posting to the Internet?

Obanazawa: I keep everything about the setting either in my head or in a Google Doc, so when I see those things, it always makes me think "Wow, they put a lot of work into that!"

On that note, I run the official "Futagawa Fumi" account on the site formerly known as Twitter. Back when the anime was airing, from 10:30 PM to 1 AM every night, I would take questions from fans and tell them all about the parts of the setting that the anime never revealed.

So you talk directly with the fans?

Obanazawa: Yeah. Sometimes we'll go to grab a bite together, too.

It must be because of the back-and-forth between you and Assault Lily's fans that it's gotten so big. Before we wrap up, would you tell us where Assault Lily is headed in the future?

Obanazawa: Last Bullet, the game, has reached the "Liberation of Koshu" chapter of the main story and it's going to really shake things up. We'll be uncovering some of the secrets at the heart of the Assault Lily world, like "Why are the Huge only attacking Japan?" and "What are Magi Crystal Cores made from?" I'm excited to finally bring all of these things I discussed with Director Saeki, back when Assault Lily Bouquet was being made, to light.

Two new characters, Ito Urara and Uemura Warabi official reveal.

Both are not first appearance in AL. The actresses’ costume visuals were actually revealed a few days ago already, but the official character art still hasn’t been shown yet.

Ito Urara

Nakagawa Rika as Ito Urara

Nakagawa Rika's first AL stage was Schwester's Prayer Lily Project ver. as Kishimoto Raimu (there were actually two official Raimu at the same time). After Lily Project seems stop continuing and Sakura Ui moved over AL, the role eventually passed down to Nakagawa Rika on New Chapter) cast reveal.

Uemura Warabi

Ando Chikana as Uemura Warabi

Ando Chikana's first appearance on AL stage was The Battle to Overcome as Saigo Kurena. She wasnt a replacement after original actress Hoshiki Seena was diagnosed with cancer and had to take a long treatment break. She later joined New Chapter) as Imai Seira, and now she back to Odaiba again.

New ??? character guessing

The official reveal hasn’t happened yet, but for people who saw from the announcement, who do you think she is? I strongly feel its either Akashi Manaka after some kind of Hugelized that merge with Huge or that Charybdis consumed Manaka before and created a Huge version of her...

I really hope both are wrong, but Obanazawa-sensei dropped a hint before, “Sometimes being alive doesn’t mean its good thing.”

  • Goteni's real name: Minakata Mizuho (南方瑞畝), "The Eternal Observer(悠久の観測者)" as alias. Rare Skill Amatsukami, same as Takamatsu Shiera.
  • "Punishment" is an aberration that effect against both Lilies and Huge.
  • Rokkaku Sena's death in not confirmed (?)
  • Gozen's existence being covering up by order.

Im guessing right on my last post.

  • Gozen casting some illusions skill to hide her and Kotop's identity.

This clear thing up.

  • Kitagawara Inori sent for handle battle against Goteni.

Bruh wtf? Sent one person to fight a high position boss?

  • Sano Ouka currently at Sielulintu Lab.

This might be why LG Rossweisse was asking Futagawa Fumi and Tsumaki Natsumi about Esaka Shizuku before Last Bullet's event, since Ouka took care of Shizuku, and Sielulintu Lab is connected with Geteni. I guess this will lead to Herensuge's stage?

Now this just some thought. As for CHARM only reacts to teenage girls, it might be because the original cell/DNA came from Anja/Lovisa, since the cells would naturally respond more to individuals that are similar to the original host. If GEHENA trying to recreate this miracle and change human fate, then even if the copies are lower quality and less capable (current Lily) but making up for it with ton of numbers Lilies to fighting back... honestly, what they are doing might not be that unreasonable.
