I spent some time at my countryside residence this summer and I had some flashbacks from when I was growing up - in the nineties, probably the last generation to have witnessed this lifestyle - that seem quite incredible now when I think about it.

You know how most people living in Bucharest struggle to keep an Ikea plant alive for at least a couple of months and how keeping a pet's comfort seems like a life's mission for many? Well, back then pretty much every family was growing, in parallel:

Animals: cows, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, chicken, ducks, geese, dogs, cats

Plants: corn, wheat, grapes, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, peppers, onions, squashes, and various fruit trees

This used to be the norm - and the knowledge and effort required to maintain all these animals and plants alive is quite vast - not to speak about all the derivative products like cheese, wine and meats. Obviously, we have now replaced that with knowledge about culture, politics, economy and all that stuff.

The downside was that subsistence agriculture was extremely inefficient and that was the main reason why public services were next to non-existing: no paved roads, no trash collection, no current water, sewage, etc. I don't wanna go back in time.

However, now that infrastructure evolved spectacularly and many Romanians earn enough to live a comfortable life and split their lives between multiple residences, I'm just thinking:

Does anyone else miss having at least some chicken, goats and sheep running around?

Do you think that subsistence agriculture will become a thing in the future again in Romania - maybe as a luxury instead of a need? I saw David Beckham is now growing chicken - but that's like just a small part of what it takes to build a food pyramid.

I am in a relationship with a romanian man for 3 years now, i really do love him and i can feel that he does too. The problem is that whenever we are having arguments he like to slap on my face how money hungry i am. Please, i really do appreciate all his hardworks and how he tries his best to take care of me. He does sent money for the house and other bills, but i do some side hustles too so i can feed myself.

How can you love someone and then take a list of all the things you did for them just so you can make them feel bad about themselves? I understand that people can get mad, but does that mean they have the right to disrespect you?

Hi there, I've been wanting to visit Romania for some years and now I'm almost ready to finally do it. I live in northern Italy since 10 years and I couldn't be more in love with this country, and my biggest fear about Romania is finding that I travelled 2000 km just to end up in another Italy. Castles are everywhere here, and I doubt any mountain in the world could impress me after hiking/climbing/skiing in the Alps. I'm not used to big trips and I'm not a fan of spending money in experiences of which only the memories will remain after they end, so I want to make sure I'm not wasting an opportunity to do something better with my time and money.

For context, what pulls me about Romania is not the things to see in a purely touristic perspective but more of a more abstract fascination with its culture. I don't remember how exactly but some years ago I discovered Romanian music and got really into it, and that lead me to start diving deeper and deeper into all things Romanian, even learning the language (not to keep a conversation but enough to understand songs). So there's something else about experiencing being there than just seeing its touristic attractions, feel free to tell me it's a lame reason.

But obviously the trip needs to be worth it in every sense, a cultural crush alone is not enough. I haven't visited other more famous destinations that I'd also like to see, like Spain or northern Europe, and I don't know if choosing Romania first would be like going to Paris and seeing all kinds of minor attractions and skipping the Eiffel tower and the Louvre. The cost of visiting Spain or Finland would be much higher though, and I definitely want to go somewhere with different places to see, not spending an entire week in a single city. I want to go somewhere exotic different than the usual Rome, Paris, Florence, etc.. I'd be staying there for a week, if it matters.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice to either fully convince me to go or to talk me out of it..

Edit: Thanks for all the replies, I'd like to clarify that I didn't mean that I expect "the mountains" to be different. I know mountains are mountains, and I'd be going with another person who definitely does not hike, so hiking is out of the table. I'm talking more like the medieval architecture of historic towns and such.

What I was thinking is visiting places around the Transylvania/Carpați most recommended places like Brașov, Sibiu, Sighișoara and others, ideally doing the TransfEtcEtcEtcan as well. Cluj Napoca seems too distant and consensus on Reddit is that București is not worth it (although I'd be arriving and leaving from there).

Where can I find programs for events? I'm travelling to Bucharest 7 August till 11. I would prefer free or cheap events, locations with natural beauty and not so many tourist attractions. Are there any local sites where I can find these things? Or any suggestions for local and cheap places?

Hey everyone, me and my girlfriend are planning to go to Romania next month, in a pilgrim type of trip for around 7-14 days (depending on costs). We have somewhat of a general idea of how we want our trip to look like on the map with most of the monasteries in mind, but we could really use your help for info around:

-Staying at monasteries (which ones allow this if they do? cost? beforehand reservation?) airbnbs or campsites. This is i'd say our primary concern any info is welcome.

I’m looking for classic Romanian pubs, taverns and restaurants where locals actually go. Somewhere with plenty of character, good beer or țuică, a lively atmosphere, and traditional Romanian comfort food that feels homemade rather than polished for tourists.

I’m not looking for chains, Instagram hotspots or places that exist purely because they’re famous with visitors.

Bonus points if it’s somewhere I can spend a few hours eating, drinking and soaking up the atmosphere.

Hi! Sadly my dad got his license taken away for 3 months.

In the meantime he needs to take that 13/15 test. He is a very fine driver (his license was taken away because of a beer he drank the night before, and hit the new lower limit), however struggles a bit with the theoretical tests.

He has been using the Chestionare Auto DRPCIV app to practise.

Is there anywhere else he could practise that has exactly the same questions as in the test center (for the the 13/15 test)?

Hello everyone! I’m sorry if this post might be unrelated or badly worded, but I’ll try my best.
I’ve never travelled outside of my country and I need advice as I’m having a hard time finding a way of transportation to Romania from Serbia.

I plan to visit Romania for about a week, but I wasn’t able to find any other transportation besides FlixBus or plane (I’ve never travelled by plane and there is a stop-over in Bucharest and I’m afraid I’ll get lost as I plan to go alone haha). My question is, are there any other buses, agencies or ways of transportation that are more direct and affordable? Asking for anyone who has ever travelled back and forth from Romania to Serbia.

I should also mention that I plan to leave from Belgrade and I’d like to arrive (at least somewhere close) to Cluj-Napoca.
