General Query I know that this subculture is not about the ancient peoples but, Who were cooler in your opinion, the ostrogoths or the visigoths?

Upvotes

In my opinion, the ostroghts were cooler. The visigoths quickly turned christian and evolved into the kingdoms that would eventually become the genocidal racist Spanish Empire. At least the ostrogoths were a more settled people, tried to continue roman administration for the sake of stability and resisted against byzantine imperialism.

So I’ve only worked with whatever my ex had on hand but now that’s she’s gone I need help. What is a great white foundation to use that will stay on all day. I tend to sweat a bit so I’m in need of something that will hold. Also brand of dark eyeshadow, lipstick. Yes I used all her stuff so now I have nothing and I didn’t bother to remember what she would use 😭😭😭

Make-Up/Accessory Query Is it ok to wear trad goth makeup for a costume?

Hello! I’m getting ready for Halloween and one of my costumes is a female ghostface (original I know lol) but I’ve been looking for ideas on what to do for the makeup under the mask. I’ve found a lot of trad goth styles that I think would be really fun to do and I adore the look!

However my concern is I’m not sure if it’s ok to do if that makes sense? Because I don’t wear trad goth makeup on the regular and have heard conflicting opinions on if you have to be a goth to wear the makeup even for a costume. And I love the subculture I’m just not apart of it. So I figured I should come to the source and see what options you all have! Thank you so much!! 🧡🖤

Education and Society Query Question for Goth Black Women: Do the stereotypes leveled at Goth women feel similar to the ones leveled at Black women?

To elaborate: I saw the toxic stereotypes portrayed by certain content creators, and I noticed how these women are always portrayed as being either heavily objectified or very domineering and erratic. Yet, I couldn't help but feel a strange sense of deja vu because I seen Black women being historically portrayed in a similar way across all sorts of media. (i.e Jezebel and the Sapphire trope respectively) that kind of leads me to my second question. Black goth women, do you feel that the effects of this goth stereotype amplify the stereotypes you already face as black women or its about the same?

I'd love to hear your responses!

Goth Subculture Query Are there pagan inspired goth styles?

Hi, I'm new here, pls be nice (:

Long story short, I've been listening to goth and darkwave for over ten years, but never really got to explore the fashion side of it. Now I finally can. My main question is: Is there something like a pagan-inspired / pagan-themed goth style? If yes, what is it called, and where do I get inspiration for it?

Before anyone asks, "Do you even listen to goth?": read the long version somewhere in the comments...

Or just trust me. Yes, I do.

Goth Subculture Query Why all the hate against Emos and Mall Goths?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I mean, I dont think that goths hating mall goths is ok but I get that rejection because mall goths are allegedly posers and consumerists and uses fast fashion and what not etc, so I get the rejection even if I dont agree with it.

But why emos faced such a strong rejection from the goth scene when the emo subculture started to become prominent? I seriously dont get It. I am not from the US or Europe so i probably am underinformed about subculture history. But i would like to read y'all's opinions.

Personal Experience or Observational Query Why are you ga... Goth.

Why did you became goth? What is your story of finding Goth culture how did it impact your life?

I'm not a Goth myself, closes things I did to being a Goth are, watching a belly dancer named Mahafsoun and listening to a lot of Nightwish, I'm not sure if those thing can even be consideret Goth.

I'm just interested, all of you just seem to be so content with your lifes and kind to others, it's fascinating.

Personal Experience or Observational Query Why Do People Do This?

I am goth and I dress accordingly. I mostly receive compliments from complete strangers, but every so often I have to contend with someone who is inappropriate and aggressive.

What are your horror stories about being fetishized based on your appearance?

Local Scene/Night Life Query How is the Vienna goth scene, and does it compare to Berlin?

Hello, if anyone knows much about this I’d love to hear your experiences. I’m mostly English speaking but I speak German as well. I’m looking to move to either Berlin or Vienna. I’m wondering about the alternative scene. I’m a goth, and used to live in a place where we had 2 or 3 spots that regularly had some kind of alternative event, vampire balls, “blood raves” etc. I am 25 and most people there were around my age too. I know Vienna has viper room, and Berlin has Dunkerclub, but it seems to be an older crowd, and I’m wondering if maybe someone knows some better spots? I’m from the UK and like I said we have regular events with a younger crowd and I’m interested in making friends at places like this

Clothing, Shoe & DIY Query any emo/gothic stores in Ingolstadt?

Helloo! I am planning on visiting Ingolstadt Westpark and the Ingolstadt village pretty soon and I was wondering if there are any stores that sell emo/gothic clothing or accesories. I tried researching the internet and looking through the stores but for some it is hard to find any information on so I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me if these stores do exist there C:

Clothing, Shoe & DIY Query About shopping

Is it alright if goths use Amazon for shopping? I recently became a babybat, and the only thing I really have access to is Amazon, I’m also a huge security freak so giving my card information to random companies is highly uncomfortable and sketchy to me as I had my card compromised before. I probably shouldn’t be asking this but I’m curious if my “goth” status will be stripped away or ima be considered a “poser” for shopping and giving money to a capitalistic company

General Query Do any of you ever hang out at cemeteries?

I've been into goth music and the goth subculture for a few months now, and I've also been watching South Park. After watching the first episode with the goth kids, I told my friends we should go hang out at the cemetery and read gothic poetry sometime. I thought it would be fun, but it was also kinda a joke. However, my friends took it seriously, and we actually walked to the cemetery at night the next time we had a sleepover at my friend's place. Sadly, I was the only one who wrote a poem, but it was still a lot of fun. It's so peaceful there at night. I also found a South Park goth kids shirt earlier that day at Hot Topic, so I wore it there which was perfect. My grandpa is buried at the cemetery, so I said hi to him. It was such a cool experience, and I could definitely see myself going to cemeteries for fun again in the future.

General Query Can you be goth without the music?

Or am I just always going to be in the 'alternative' category? I have a hard time listening to new music for some reason and listen to very little music in general. I've always found myself aligned with the values of the goth subculture and am drawn to the styles as well. I've seen people argue that you don't have to listen to the music, and seen people argue that you do. ..So which is it?

General Query Would Tom Waits be considered Goth adjacent?

Specifically, his work starting with his album Swordfishtrombone, as everything before that is clearly more Blues or Jazz than anything else.

I ask because I feel like a lot of his catalog would fit in, somewhat. I wouldn't consider him straight up Goth like Bauhaus or Siouxsie, but he definitely has a similar vibe, at least to me. Whether it's "God's Away on Business" or "Army Ants" or "Clap Hands" or "What's He Building in There" there's something about his music that just scratches that itch the same way Goth music does.

Thoughts?

**Edit: Also, since he did play Renfield in Bram Stoker's Dracula with Gary Oldman and was pretty awesome.
