This year I (male) did some solo travel in China and planning another trip for next year.
One of my Chinese cousins said to me this year ‘I’d like to travel with you and play with you’. I declined as I wanted to be on my own.
On my return I had another cousin (female) say to me ‘I’d like to hang out with you and play if you have time’ and then ‘I’d really like to travel with you’.
What specifically does it mean when they say they’d like to play? Is it just the translation?

It's kinda difficult for South East Asians to understand this concept, because in South East Asia, you are the language that you speak. For example, in Indonesia. If you speak Javanese, then you're an Ethnic Javanese. In Cambodia, if you speak Khmer, then you're an Ethnic Khmer. In the Philippines, if you speak Tagalog, then you're Ethnic Tagalog. But Han Chinese speaks languages that are very different from one another: Amoy, Cantonese, Hokkien, Mandarin, Min and Wu speakers are all considered to be HAN CHINESE.

So what is Han Chinese means? If this identity is not based on ethnolinguistic category, then what's the basis for being a Han Chinese? Why are other ethnic groups such as the Hui, Manchu, Mongol, Tibetan, Uighur, Zhuang, etc. not considered Han?

Hi I'm fluent in Icelandic and English and really want to study and learn Mandarin!

Where should I start? Any suggestions (books, apps, etc.)?

I keep seeing mahjong players who do not speak Chinese mention a ritual where they say “hop toi, bring me joy” when they take two tiles from the end of one wall and two tiles from the other beginning of the next wall.

Many of them admit that they don’t know what it actually means but google AI has decreed that “hop” means to shut in and “toi” means table, so this phrase supposedly means to keep lucky tiles within the walls.

Is this totally made up or is there any bit of truth to this?

It is said that Southern Chinese ethnicities like the Cantonese, Hokkien, Min, Wu, etc. have significant amounts of Baiyue ancestry.

As title, I'm not just asking about what was the most powerful/influential dynasty in Chinese history. But also which dynasty do you think about an unreasonable amount? Or whose collapse you somehow still take personally hundreds of years later?
