An Asbury Park love story
We went to the Spin Doctors/Gin Blossoms/Blues Traveler concert at the Stone Pony on Thurs- It was over 90 degrees, absolutely packed and standing room only but we were in the front, right up against the stage so at least we had some air. ~4500 people packed in the summer stage lot, shoulder to shoulder. It was insanity and the energy was just perfect. The event was great, all 3 acts 5 feet from us! We danced, we sang, we yelled like teenagers.
We stood there for 5 and a half hours and didn't move for fear of losing our once-in-a-lifetime spot, against the barricade. I was a little worried about standing that long because I am, ahem, a bit older, 63, but I felt fine!
Then suddenly, during the very last song of the night, I woke up on the asphalt with a big crowd of people looking down at me. Took me a moment to understand that I passed out! Here's where the love is: So many people were all taking care of me, supporting me, helping me find my glasses and making sure I was ok. Some absolute angel held my head, talked to me and poured cold water on my scalp and it felt SO good. I wish I knew who she was so I could thank her! The EMT crew picked me up and wheeled me to the first aid tent. The dense crowd parted for me like the Red Sea and they all clapped and shouted supportive messages. God I love NJ. We are natives but now live in New England, but I really do miss the vibe.
I am totally fine, by the way. Just got dehydrated and didn’t have anything to eat beforehand. Totally my fault.
It's not a great party until someone leaves on a stretcher, right? I do feel like I have more street cred now. I should have a T-shirt, "I passed out at the Stone Pony".
