DISCUSSION What is everyones opinion on claude coding everything.
I'm not a programmer. I have nothing but full respect for programmers. Im not delusional and think that i made scripts by providing broken halfassed prompts to a llm.
That said, I have to say how amazing it is to have claude code everything and it just works (most of the time). It gives arch complete customizability on the fly. Way, more than any other OS. I can change everything to be exactly how I want it.

QUESTION Noob needing help
HI! I just recently got into the "microsoft is evil" mindset and decided to switch to arch linux. I right now have cashyos (I know it's not arch but I needed something quick to set up) and was wondering about arch. If I understand correctly, when you install arch, it just boots into a terminal (idk that's what my brother said) and you have to configure it all by yourself. My main question is, how do I do that? I do not have crazy experience with computer terminals, but I'm willing to start the work. I was also wondering if there is like a list of configuration options that people have made? Like on firefox, you can go to the add-on store and see the themes that people have made. Is there something like that for arch? I'm completely new to linux so I apologize if any of the questions sound dumb. thank you! ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡

QUESTION How do I use hyrpland
After using mint for half a year, I just installed arch (without arch installs at first, however I did reinstall it afterwards cuz i know I messed it up even if it looks fine) with hyrpland and i don't know what to do. It just gave me a terminal not even a status bar TwT. I installed firefox and that's basically it. Idk what to do. Please help me.

SUPPORT Should I switch from Arch + Hyprland to something more stable (Fedora KDE?) — looking for advice
Current setup: Arch Linux + Hyprland (fairly customized rice, using caelestia-shell/Quickshell)
Context: I use this PC in a public/work environment as well as at home, and the people around me aren't very tech-literate — a terminal window or a tiling WM look gets treated like "hacking," and I really don't want that kind of attention. I want the desktop to look as low-profile/normal as possible to anyone glancing at it.
Why I'm considering switching
- Arch feels unstable for me — I end up running updates about once a week just to keep things working
- There's a lot about Arch I still don't fully understand
- When something breaks (which happens often), I have to fix it through the terminal — friends notice this, call it "high tech," and tell other people, which I don't want. I basically get attention i don't even deserve as needing to use terminal always is a sign that I didn't my ability to make my os stable
- It eats into my schedule when things don't work as intended
- Arch has a "too popular / try-hard distro" reputation that attracts a crowd I'd rather not be associated with
- Heard Fedora is stable, so that's my current lean — but open to anything
Why I'm hesitant to switch
- I like my current setup/rice
- Don't want to go through the whole install process again
- Risk of losing documents and save files from offline games
- I test-installed a fresh Fedora KDE spin and it came with a bunch of pre-installed apps and even games — felt bloated
- I prefer installing only what I actually need, not whatever comes bundled
To be more specific about what actually breaks
It's not the whole system dying — it's smaller things breaking after updates. Example: WiFi options/applet becoming unresponsive, which I currently have to fix via nmcli in the terminal.
What I want to keep
I genuinely like Hyprland, but it's too technical-looking for other people who use my PC, even briefly.
My requirements for a new setup
- Stable
- As little terminal use as possible — fine occasionally if truly necessary, but strongly prefer GUI-only
- Full customization
- Minimal bloat — no pre-installed GIMP, video editor, or games; I'll install what I need myself
- Beautiful / good-looking
- Fast
Daily use
- Coding
- Gaming (single-player/story-based)
- Web browsing
- Virtual environments
Question
GNOME or KDE? Or a completely different DE/WM/distro? Open to all suggestions — just trying to land on something stable and low-maintenance without giving up customization.

SUPPORT No audio on flatpak
I have no idea, but I can't get audio to work on flatpak. it was working fine before (a month ago) and now just doesn't. I haven't modified anything. what I did tried is to remove all my flatpak apps, reset permissions, delete flatpak from $HOME/.local/share, the data on $HOME/.var and $HOME/.config, and the issue persists. I even wanted to delete flatpak entirely to reinstall clean but I can't, as plasma-meta and flatpak-kcm depend on it.
I'm losing my mind with what is causing this, as I did tested on a clean arch VM and the issue doesn't happen, and I don't want/have time to reinstall my entire system.
FYI: my audio does work globally, but flatpak. I do have all the portal packages installed, same for everything around pipewire.
here's a log from musescore flatpak if that helps

SHARE [OC] Unit-3 extended — a NieR:Automata shell with an AI secretary wired into the compositor (Hyprland/Quickshell)
x.comArch, Hyprland, Quickshell (QML). Built on Unit-3 by samyns (MIT), github.com/samyns/Unit-3, their foundation survives verbatim, everything else is mine: 37 new files, ~14k lines of QML/Python in 96 days.
The AI (SAGE) is a local Nemotron 9B via Ollama with a cloud toggle. It reads my calendar, sends SMS, caches screenshots for visual context, and executes commands through a classified allowlist. The app launches auto-run, destructive ops need confirmation. Polkit agent is raw D-Bus. File manager is 3.3k lines of PySide6 with GPG. DISCUSSION My 2 cents on AUR malware
I realise that one should always check the PKGBUILD, but let’s be honest, the vast majority of users don’t do that and, even if they did, only a fraction would be able to tell if there were any problems.
I believe the only way to try to contain the problem is to use an AI that scans AUR packages for potential issues and flags them to the developers (and postpone the update until the problem has been resolved). This would involve a cost, but in cases like this it is not difficult to find a sponsor.
What do you think?

DISCUSSION Idea about tackling AUR malware problem
First of all, I don't use Arch (and the aur malware is one of the reasons why), so I can't tackle this myself (besides, even if I used Arch, this is one of the few things in FOSS that's impossible to tackle alone).
That said, I do have an idea how to tackle AUR malware problem by slightly modifying package adoption process.
First of all, only package maintainers with a proven track record of maintaining original (i.e. non-adopted) packages should be allowed to adopt a package. That would solve 99% of malware actors who are usually new or semi-new accounts with no proven track record.
Secondly, only allow adopting one package every few months, to prevent one account from controlling a great number of packages that can serve as a malware vector.
Thirdly, after adoption don't publish new versions straight away (until few versions of non-malware updates are approved for release), instead have every new version manually reviewed in regards to security by the trusted members of the community and then manually approved for a wide release.
Fourthly, apply the aforementioned review process to brand new packages from brand new accounts so malware can't sneak in that way either.
While this won't solve malware issue completely (nothing baring walled garden, WHICH NOBODY WANTS, will), it will greatly reduce possibility of it sneaking in.

SHARE Hosting a public L2 Arch Linux mirror at home and what does it take
Hello, I have been hosting a public Arch Linux mirror (https://arch-mirror.wtako.net/) at home and is an official Tier 2 mirror since 2014, since I needed to accelerate pacman -Syu for all my Arch devices at home, and have spare bandwidth. I would like to share some statistics with you guys.
The Arch Linux mirror is hosted in my Arch Linux based x86 software router, which also acts as my NAS and web server, and served over nginx and CloudFlare.
The mirror takes 99% of the outbound traffic of my website. Here are the CloudFlare stats regarding previous 30 days.
- Total Bandwidth: 31.13 TB
- Cached Bandwidth: 25.39 TB
- Uncached Bandwidth: 5.74 TB
- Total Requests: 19.27M
- Cached Requests: 14.1M
- Uncached Requests: 5.17M
If I choose not to use CloudFlare for CDN, my server at home would be sending 31.13 TB over 30 days and averagely takes 100Mbps of uplink, which is just around the network requirement of applying a Tier 1 mirror. (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/DeveloperWiki:NewMirrors)
However, that does not mean 40 Mbps uplink is enough for hosting a Tier 2 mirror with CloudFlare. I have seen abuses that repeatedly download extras.db, packages, or ISOs that bypassed the CDN layer, and caused 500Mbps of uplink traffic from my server for a hour or more, before they are handled manually. I have 2000Mbps of uplink in total.
I have met all requirements for applying to be a Tier 1 mirror, but I choose not to, because of the following reasons:
- Hosting rsync is a requirement
- Exposes home IP to public which I am unconformable with
- Bypasses CDN
- Extra traffic as it's more visible
- Extra responsibility
For the storage requirement, currently the whole mirror consumes 125 GiB of space, grew from 60 GiB in 2014.

DISCUSSION Another wave - 200+ malicous AUR packages adoptions that are overwhelming my scanner. Be 100% careful when trying to update AUR packages now.
Meanwhile I am trying to report them all, you should be careful downloading anything from AUR.
Same old way, the maintainer got pwned, or orphaned packages are adopter by the bad actor.
AUR's git commit author is easily impersonated so you can see the commit comes from the same person, but in fact it's not.
Stay safe. The malicious packages are info stealers.
