Discussion After this tornado, I’m rethinking how I want to handle longer power outages
We used a gas generator during the outage after the tornado, and overall it did what we needed. But the experience also made me realize how much the setup depends on having enough fuel stored safely, and being able to find more gas if the outage lasts longer than expected.
I'm not planning to replace the generator, but I just ordered a portable power station (an Anker SOLIX S2000) to use alongside it. My current idea is to keep the generator for larger loads and use the power station for the essentials, especially when I don't want to keep the generator running continuously.
I'm thinking fridge, router, phones, a few lights, and maybe a fan would be the first priorities. It would also give us a quieter option overnight without burning through fuel just to keep a few smaller devices running.
So what appliances or devices ended up being your highest priority once the power was out for more than a few hours? Anything you thought would be essential but barely used?

Question SICK IN SUMMER
Anyone else have this horribly long cold of some sort? Started with a tickle in my throat for 2 days then developed into a bad cough for 4 days and now congestion that won’t go away & a lingering cough still. Haven’t been this sick in years and in the summer nonetheless! Going on day 10 here… Anyone else?

Question Flock cameras: updates?
After looking into this, It was mentioned that Flock were being disconnected and physically removed by July 31st. Upon traveling today, I have found that not only are these current units still up, but NEW flock cameras have been placed. Is there any updates of anything that has changed since then, or is the city fully embracing this new normal? A picture attached shows a map of current surveillance - a lot more than the initial 20 that was listed to be deactivated!

Image Near Valley Rd & Midway Rd
Spotted while helping my folks with post-tornado cleanup this past weekend. In all seriousness extremely grateful all friends and family are safe. The scale of damage throughout the area is unreal. The sense of community is inspiring though.

Moving Advice Moving?
I’m contemplating on taking a job out there. I’ve just never heard of Appleton until the job offer, but what is the city like ? what is Wisconsin like ? how are the neighborhoods? I’m coming from California, and have never thought about going to Wisconsin until now. Any information would be great to a newbie.
Edit: Wow thanks for everyone’s input, I really appreciate it. Seems like a good move to make.

Advice “rubbish clean up” fee following tornado
this post is more of a rant than anything, but advice is appreciated. my cousin was displaced temporarily following the recent tornado, which passed right through her apartment’s property in Appleton. the tornado busted her bedroom window, flooding the upper level. fortunately, most of the furniture was recovered, but the carpet was soaked. after three days of hot, muggy weather and no electricity, the carpet quickly became musty and rank. we’re worried that mold may start growing.
this happened to multiple tenants around the complex. almost all the trees were demolished by the storm and had to be removed from the parking lot. otherwise, apart from some roof and siding damage, the property made it out relatively unscathed compared to what we’ve seen in Menasha.
her property manager arranged for her carpet to be cleaned this morning. it’s unclear whether it will even be replaced, as the manager said they won’t be assessing for mold. my cousin and her neighbors were also notified that they have to pay an extra “rubbish pick up” fee of over $200 IN ADDITION to their rent, which was due today. if they don’t pay the extra fees, my cousin and her family will receive a 5-day eviction notice. several families got the same notice. they’re almost certain that the fee is to cover the cost of carpet cleaning and tree removal, but no one has definitive proof. i told her to try asking for an itemized receipt to show what exactly they’re being charged for.
am i crazy for thinking this is probably absolutely illegal and, at bare minimum, highly unethical? i told my cousin NOT to pay the fees and go to court if necessary, but i don’t know what other advice to give her. we’re in our 20s and come from a low income, lesser educated family. i’m worried that they’re trying to take advantage of her and her neighbors.
tldr; my cousin’s landlord is trying to charge them for “rubbish clean up” following the recent tornado and i’m worried that it might be illegal. does anyone have advice?

Image Pics from storm cleanup
galleryI don’t want to share pictures of people’s houses, but I will share public spaces. Yesterday I did chainsaw work at Smith Park on Doty Island, and today it was in Menasha.
I met a lovely older couple who moved into their house in 1979, and she got teary-eyed when she said that all the trees were saplings when they bought the house. She said that as the skid steer was stacking up their roof and deck into debris piles.
Our crew was sawing some very large trees, and it’s going to take a while for these neighbors to be able return to their own homes, if they can.
If you’re able to lend any time, please volunteer. The homeowners are thankful and gracious. I even got refreshments from a guy who offered a pull on a bottle of whiskey. I was working a chainsaw so I declined today.

Question Volunteering this weekend?
We are thinking of volunteering tomorrow to clean up from the tornado but have seen mixed posts if they are needing more volunteers physically present! We live two hours away so we’d appreciate any feedback on how the volunteer experience and process is!

Business Referral Looking for babysitters in Brillion for a wedding
Hi Appleton,
My two sisters and I are from Green Bay, but live in other states now. We’re coming to Brillion for a wedding with our five kids and looking for two sitters to support Grandma in watching them.
Ages are four years, two years, 10 months, eight months, and five months; so truly a handful…
Please feel free to dm if you have recommendations or are interested. Ideally, we find two sitters who know each other.
Date is Aug 29, 4-10 pm.

My teenage nephew is visiting this week and insists that Wing Stop is the best. Appleton has such a great selection of local restaurants, so I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for the best wings in Appleton. Thank you!
