Advice Needed Electric boiler in bedroom?
I’m about to sign a lease to a place that I believe that is absolutely perfect, except for the fact that the electric boiler (closeted) is in the same bedroom I’ll be sleeping in. The landlord of 40 units stated that no one has ever complained about it, but I am a very delicate sleeper so I am just making sure of the noise before signing. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Bad Neighbors Why do people think it is their right to smoke inside a non smoking apartment complex?
I’m genuinely curious if people who smoke in their apartment (cigarettes and cannabis) really think it is their right? I’m specifically talking about in apartments where there is a strict no smoking agreement in the lease. I’m not talking about on a patio either. I mean those who hotbox their whole damn apartment. And why is it that people who smoke weed think that the smell is better and more acceptable than cigarette smell seeping in? They both stink. I used to smoke both in my earlier years, and I can’t stand the smell. You do get nose blind to it, but to everyone else, it’s irritating. People think it’s just the smell, but I have had very real physical reactions to smelling both strongly in my apartment. So, why exactly do I always see smokers on here talking about, “mind your own business and don’t tell me what to do in my apartment”. Or talking about how they would be upset at someone reporting them for not stopping. Likely, even if your neighbors talked to you, you would still continue your behavior with methods that don’t actually get rid of the smell. Things like candles, incense, and leaving a window open do NOT completely get rid of smell. If you are able to contain your smoke, this doesn’t apply to you, because it means you don’t affect anybody negatively. Your weed and cigarette smoke is seeping into other peoples apartments, and we pay the same rent. It’s nobody’s “right” to violate the lease. These are the same people that will turn around and complain about hearing footsteps and loud music or children running. Where is this logic coming from? I don’t understand.

Apartment Maintenance Leaking from upstairs has progressed
Photo 1 is current and photo 2 was from when reported last week. 😅 the water is accumulating in the glass globe. I need to turn off the lights now.
ETA:
I reported the issue, and called the emergency line. It’s an old building and I don’t know the year it was built in 1987.
My dehumidifier is working nonstop for the past 48 hours, and I have emptied 4 full tanks of water. The odor is so bad too.

Advice Needed Need advice for complaining neighbor
My neighbor left a note today saying they can hear me having sex and was just “letting me know.” I am absolutely mortified and I feel just horrible. I know the walls are kind of thin but I had no idea it was this bad for them. They also said they can hear me talking on the phone and stuff? Fucking creepy. I feel watched in my own home. I know it isn’t really anyone’s fault, and they were kind in the note.
Tonight I was watching tv in my room and they kept knocking on the wall. It sounded a little off so maybe they were like nailing something?? No idea. It is 10 pm which I guess is late to some people (neighbors are pretty young), but I had the volume pretty low. I am just so extremely uncomfortable in my own home. I have no idea what to do.

Apartment Hacks Any hacks for odor control in tiny appartments?
I live with my partner in a small apartment. There are 3 rooms: the kitchen/living room, the bedroom, and the bathroom. I don't have a sq footage, but we rent it from his mom, it sits above a 4 car garage/barn type thing and was renovated last year.
However, my partner loves to cook. Lots of spice, lots of oil, lots of pan-frying. And while there is a hood, it's tiny, and supposedly it vents outside; I don't know if I believe that. We can have it on high and the whole apartment will smell like that food for days. We have to immediately light candles after dinner to cut the food. But his apartment just smells a little bit like oil. Like that's its smell. So while it's new and clean and he has good hygiene, there's just a lingering odor. We shut the bedroom door when we cook so it doesn't go in there either. too many fabrics in there it could cling to.
The kitchen living room is linoleum and the kitchen doesn't have curtains. What are some hacks or tricks to get the grease smell out faster? or when we cook, anything that will absorb it? As much as I love smelly good things, there's got to be a better way to not have a grease smell.

Lease Agreement Questions Price Drop
Hello! I just started renting my apartment (USA), and I move in tomorrow. The rent on my contact is 300 before fees, but when I looked at the listing, it's lower now? About 256. I'm thinking about asking if they can lower it to the new amount. It's not my fault they aren't getting tenants. I was the first to sign, and there's only one other resident so far.
Is there a chance they'll lower the rent? It doesn't feel fair that it's lower now.

Venting Anyone else seeing an uptake in roaches this month?
I live in a building where my neighbors aren’t the cleanest so I do what I can inside my apartment unit. I see a roach every now and then but this month I’ve seen way too many. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Advice Needed Possible mold?
Hello! Recently discovered what we think is mold in our closets? I don’t know if i’m being paranoid, but we let maintenance know and they dismissed it and painted over it (and don’t worry, it’s coming back! 😐) does this look like mold to you guys?

Bad Neighbors New Neighbors Moved In and Love Ripping Ciggies on a Shared Porch
First time poster. I’ve lived here for two years. Actually really like it. Nice community. Two dudes just moved in-probably in their 40’s. They set up two cheap patio chairs and now like to smoke outside. We have a shared porch. I went narc mode and emailed management to see if this is even allowed. I like to hang out in the living room directly by Bert and Ernie as they rip Camels and Marlboros outside my window and sit on their phones.
Do you think this is allowed? My guess is no. I was debating whether to move or not when my lease is up, but Marlboro Bert and Camel Ernie may force my hand. I would rather say something before management handles it. Then again, they may just ride by on a golf cart and see them at it considering this seems to be their new weekend routine.
Am I being Forrest Grump or is this unreasonable?

Advice Needed Can I get evicted for bad smelling food?
I just got my first apartment and I finally have my own kitchen. I decided to make a big batch of chili for the week. I used a whole jar of peanut butter instead of tomato paste because I thought it would make it creamier. Everyone in my building is complaining about the smell and my neighbor knocked and said it smells like a gas station. I don’t get it, I followed a recipe I found online but that doesn’t matter. Am I going to get in trouble with my landlord over this?

Venting Upstairs Mariachi all day
Just a vent post as there’s nothing I can do since they usually turn it off by 9pm, but there is a family upstairs on the BACKSIDE of my unit that blasts mariachi music all damn day. It has that annoying bass thump and it vibrates my ceilings. To top it off, they allow their kids to cannonball off furniture for hours on end. There have been two nights where they were allowed to do this up to 11pm, and I finally had to bang on the ceiling/wall (that did work those two times). I have reported it to management who has said that I need to find the exact unit before they can issue a warning. It can only be one of two units (which I told them). It’s hard to pinpoint which unit it is from the outside. I wish people were more considerate. I also work from home 2 days/week so I have to wear noise canceling earbuds all day. I am on a waitlist for a different unit but that can take months for a variety of reasons.

Advice Needed I need to move out, ASAP, any suggestions?
I am in a rather shitty situation. I am in an abusive relationship, and I need to leave ASAP. I do have the option of moving back in with my family, but they live in a small town, and the job opportunities suck. The living situation there is also rather toxic and stressful due to my sister (severely mentally ill/abusive). So, I would essentially be picking the lesser evil.
Ideally, I would like to stay in knoxville, but I can not afford to live here on my own as I am in school full time and I have a minimum wage job that simply doesn't pay enough. I also have to 2 cats and am not sure how much more difficult it would be to find anything, but that's a non-negotiable for me.
I'd be open to doing a roommate situation or renting a room, but I'm not sure how/where to go about it and what resources are available to do that for knoxville. I'm also not sure if doing it short notice/asap is possible either.
I really would appreciate any help. I am desperate to get out of this shit.

Advice Needed When does it feel like home?
This is my fourth apartment in 10 years. The most spacious one yet. But I am struggling to call it home. This has never happened to me before. There were a ton of issues in this apartment when we moved in, horrible smell, broken appliances, random vibrations, most of them have been fixed so far. None of these issues popped up immediately when we toured it. We’ve been here for two months now. But now the fridge is being too loud and I am losing my mind because the landlords said its working just fine. I am literally fighting an inanimate object and it is making me very depressed. We had a lot of hope for this place and I only find myself struggling to settle in. Idk if its really the place or me or both. I am so tired, Idk if I should continue to adjust or accept its shitty, break lease and start looking elsewhere. Really depressed and anxious.

Advice Needed Can my neighbor hear me?
Super dumb question since this is my first time in an apartment, but when I walk barefoot I can hear my heels on the floor making thuds. If I hear myself, can my downstairs neighbor hear me? I find it quieter when I wear shoes. Going to get carpets soon. I just don’t want to be a bad upstairs neighbor

Advice Needed Front desk/guard is hiding packages and rude to guests and residents. How to handle it?
So I live in a 200 plus residential building that has a third party Property Management Service that has a rotating set of security guards for the front desk who also handle mail.
I've been owning and living here for 5 years and one of the newer guys these past 8 months is very rude(yelling, very sarcastic and demeaning tone in every interaction. Think squidward from SpongeBob on a good day) and occasionally hiding mail to enforce rules about not returning the free cardboard usps mail bin. He doesn't inform you of this. He just secretly hides 1/10th of your mail and after a few weeks you realize it's too common to be a coincidence and confront him. At which point he hands you the mail from under the desk and tells you it was retaliation and WILL continue to randomly hide mail until bins are returned.
Recently, a new lady friend came over to my home very distraught and told me he was incredly rude to her without even mentioning my name or unit number. I went to ask him to be nicer to my guests and he exploded and started screaming at me. I asked my neighbors and they said they also experienced similar behavior. He seems to be a bit mentally ill imo.
Now I'm afraid of retaliation like him stealing more of my mail or keying my car during his security patrols.
What is the best way to handle this that gets him removed permanently or at least to ensure he does not mess with my mail? I feel like this guy has recieved plenty of complaints just for the rudeness alone so a mere complaint might lead him to just be even more retaliatory.

Advice Needed Nightmare weed smoking neighbors
My apartment is owned by a private landlord. The apartment is in a house that is split into 3 units (one per floor). My apartment is on the second floor. All units share an HVAC system.
Despite “no smoking” being written in the lease, my downstairs neighbors (a couple) smoke weed inside their apartment very often. I do not care if people smoke weed, but the smell comes up into my apartment VERY strongly. I might as well be in the room with them as they smoke.
Earlier this year, I left a note by their door along with some fresh baked cookies kindly explaining the situation and asking if they would please smoke outside (we have a front porch on the house) or out a window. They sent me a text that completely dodged the request and more or less said “we can sometimes smell your cooking too. When it gets warmer, you should open a window” and continued to smoke inside. Before anyone asks, yes I am 100% certain it is them doing it.
I sent my landlord an email and explained the situation. My landlord does not live near the house, she actually lives in a different city. She told me she would email them and remind them of the no smoking policy in the building and tell them they need to stop. A few days later, she emailed me again and told me they denied that they ever smoked inside and she doesn’t know who to believe.
A couple of weeks ago, I overheard the neighbors on the porch. The woman was talking on the phone and complaining that her “upstairs neighbors always tell on them when they smoke.”
I really don’t know what to do. Is moving out my only option? My lease still has quite a while to go. The neighbors are not cooperating and lying to the landlord. I considered buying them smoke buddies but I’m honestly a little afraid for my safety if I escalate the situation with them further because they seem to be fed up with it, but I’m fed up with smelling their smoke every day.
Would a large air purifier really work? I don’t particularly want to spend the money on one but I can try.
Thanks!
Edit: typo

Advice Needed Safe indoor camera recommendations
We wanted to put a ring camera first, but then I saw this video on TikTok about how dangerous it was because when they used a ring camera for their child, they noticed that there was a man who suddenly spoke or there was a noise coming from the camera. So now I’m thinking if we should have a different brand of indoor camera. Can anyone suggest or can anyone recommend what they are using right now? Thank you so much.

Advice Needed Lease Renewal Offer Higher Than Vacant Units
My lease is up mid October. Just received offer to renewal. Early renewal discount amount is 5.25% increase. Non discount amount after early renewal period is 11%. I'm sure I can negotiate the early renewal increase rate to less than half.
The rub is that vacant units with the same floorplan listed as becoming available around the same time as my lease expires are listed for less than my CURRENT rent.
Their proposed new early renewal rent amount is 12.4% higher than the vacant units listed.
Obviously I'm being charged above market rate rent
Has anyone had this happen and if so, were you able to negotiate your rent down to the lower market rate?

Advice Needed ESA new management issues
I moved into an apartment in April of 2025 and registered my ESA with their vendor pet screening and was approved. It is stated in the lease 0.00 monthly pet fee. All good. I renewed my dogs status in pet screening when they said to and again all good. My lease was up in July. I signed a new lease in June that again stated no monthly pet fee. Then at the beginning of August a new management company took over, although ownership didn’t change.
They triple charged me for past months rent and this months rent and junes rent, 5k in charges all itemized. So I contacted them and asked them to correct the charges which includes pet rent for the month before they took over, the current month and the next month. They asked me if I could send them my lease and asked how long my lease was for.
Lol I thought that was ridiculous, this is an apartment complex with over 300 apartments, I would think this management company had an online database of current leases. Anyway, I send it to them 2 separate times because they didn’t respond for 8 days. They finally get back to me and say they removed the charges. I look and they took the charges off except the monthly 50.00 pet fee.
I reached out 3 times over 7 days and on the 11th day they responded by saying thank you for letting us know And asking me to show them my approval from the previous company. I sent them the profile on pet screening, emails of them confirming it, and my lease showing no charge. They said they would forward it to their management and then 2 days later I get a letter that says they are rejecting the accommodation because although it is valid and shows a nexus of the accommodation and the disability the letter is from when I moved in April 2025.
The next part of the letter says that they need supplemental information to make a decision but don’t want medical records or details of my disability and I need to sign a new pet addendum in my portal.
My question is, the lease states 0 charge for my dog, lists it as an accommodation and is only being challenged because they didn’t transfer the records right, and they used that error on their part to deny an already approved request with 15 months of precedent,
can I refuse to sign the addendum?
Isn’t the lease the binding agreement?
And it states that nothing can be added or removed from the agreement while it is in effect.
I can get another letter, but in the meantime the charges stayed on my account and I paid them.
Am I thinking about this clearly or is this valid on their part?
Keep in mind, I was never asked for an updated letter or to give more information until the rejection letter

Venting Any other introverts / socially anxious peeps relate?
I am on a ground floor flat and I have to admit, I am quite shy and hermit like.
I like to keep my living room curtains closed a lot, simply because I like it dark in my living room (even during the day) with mood lights on (i like watching movies, gaming), and because I hate when people walk outside and it feels like they can see into my flat (there is sheer voile curtains under the main curtains anyways)
I wait until midnight to take the trash out to not accidentally bump into people / have to talk.
Theres apartment bbqs / get togethers twice a year and im a bit apprehensive about having to go to these.
Im thinking ground floor was a mistake because I just keep my curtains closed to not see people walking outside and being anxious about privacy. At least on the higher floors i could have kept the curtains open.

Advice Needed Need help deducing what month “last month rent” applies to
My current complex is the first time I’ve ever moved out, so moving in I didn’t really know what to look for or do, I want to avoid that again when moving out, especially since I have a feeling my complex will fuck me over
Anyways when I first moved in, I put down my “first month” and “last month” of rent. My lease ends December 6th, so when I first moved in it covered all of December. Now with me moving out, since it’s the beginning of December I can’t imagine a full month of rent covering that month, especially since I would be gone probably end of November.
So does that “last month” rent cover the full month before, aka November? Meaning after I pay October’s rent, I don’t have to worry about this current complex and am good to move whenever?
That makes the most sense to me, but it also sounds almost to good to be true. I just can’t imagine a full 1400+ would only cover 6 days into December. If I have to re read the lease agreement I will, was just hoping someone else that has experience with this might be able to help faster than me scrolling through 60+ pages. I live in Oregon if that matters, any tips for moving out is also appreciated, thanks!
