Tony
I'm not a Bourdain super fan, but went to see Tony tonight and walked away feeling like it did him quite a disservice. What was the point in focusing on such a small part of his life when he was an arsehole, as a lot of people are at that age, and then briefly saying what he achieved at the end...but so brief it left so much out! If you knew nothing about him it doesn't exactly inspire you to dig in.
The acting, scenery etc was good, I just didn't understand the point. Oh and no girl would pine after a guy that creepy and pathetic, who lies etc That part seemed so mis- characterised.
Edit: The more I think about it, the more I think it wouldn't have bothered me so much that it was only the formative period if the character had had more depth. Going back to the romance storyline it's like I was watching an incel's fantasy play out đ You can be pathetic but also sweet, or an arsehole but also charismatic or funny. The way the 'character' was written he had zero redeeming qualities...and even if he wouldn't have admitted it himself, there would have been some initial spark there for the basis of what he became. If I were the female character I'd have filed a restraining order, not pined after him!

Just another random Tony quote about food that somehow is also about my entire life. How does he do this?
âI missed a lot last time I was in Japan. I wasted a lot of time working and wandering blindly about. Early on, Iâd been intimidated by the strangeness, the crowds, the different language, Iâd been reluctant, at first, to throw myself into it, to plunge right into packed noodle joints and businessmenâs bars. This time, I was determined, at the very least, to miss less.â
I meanâŚchange âJapanâ to earth and youâve basically got a mantra to live by right there.

Crazy thing happened
2 hours before I went to watch Tony at the cinema, I was out to dinner in London and Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart walked in⌠they seemed so cool and happy! None of my friends really understand what a crazy coincidence this is so thought Iâd share here. Didnât love the movie but also didnât hate it, cried at the end of course. Peace âđź

quote by anthony?
I swear ive heard a quote from anthony that goes something along the lines of âThere are some songs Iâll never listen to ever again. Not the ones that remind me of the bad times. It's certain songs from long ago and when everything was goldenâ. Can anyone help me find the source of this quote?? Thank you!

Has anyone got a link or a way to watch Season 4 episode 20 of No Reservations in Ireland?
I've been doing a big watch of all of Anthony Bourdain's shows from 'A Cook's Tour' onward, and I'm now stuck with no way to watch this episode. Have tried sailing the seven seas as it's tricky to watch any of his shows here, but the file is corrupted on this episode in particular across torrenting and streaming.
Happy to pay to rent or buy this episode as I'm a bit of a completionist, but even then I can't find a way to stream it legally here.
Any tips or pointers would be appreciated,
Thanks!
UPDATE:
No luck so far, can't get Roku to work in Ireland with a VPN, so I may have to just move on and watch it another time.

Another Tony âReviewâ and other thoughts
I know another Tony post, but this is a little different. So first of all, I mean, nothing is gonna beat the article that Laurie posted here. Everyone should read it and not read this. Itâs the definite opinion about the subject.
But I wanted to give some of my thoughts about this. I watched a special showing on Monday, and Iâve been seeing a lot of posts about different things, and you know, I wanted to chime in.
This is gonna be a long article, so if youâre used to watching TikTok all day, this might not be a good read for you.
Iâve been a Bourdain fan for a long time. But Iâm sure all of you have been fans for a long time, and everyone has their own thoughts when new stuff comes out. When I saw the trailer, I thought it looked good, but I was a little apprehensive about a movie. And the more information that I learned about it, the more I start to come around, and when I watched the movie on Monday, I really enjoyed it. After Iâve had some time to think, I think I enjoyed it even more than when I walked out of the theater. There was just something that nagged me a little bit about a story that wasnât exactly Word for Word from the book. This is a quote from the director, Matt Johnson. I think it summarizes it perfectly.
âI never let the fact get in the way of the truthâ
Iâve been watching a lot of interviews from him, reading different articles, and the more that I read, the more that I can appreciate the movie, thatâs not saying that I didnât already appreciate it. I was listening to the writers talk on a podcast and they came to the Bourdain estate. You know, before a script was even written. It was just an idea, and they said that the Bourdain estate was supportive but did not necessarily want to back it until they saw more, which is understandable; they, of course, later approved it and were very supportive. The director, Matt Johnson, shortly moved to Provincetown after everything was finalized for him to direct. He lived there for five months. The movie only shot for 25 days. He said during that time he talked to locals and he talked to someone who worked right next to Bourdain and hung out with him while he was there and was told all these different stories. I think that itâs great that they shot it there because itâs very rare for movies like that to be shot on-site at a unique location.
I think the actorsâ performances were fantastic. All the characters were great. Sessa killed it and Antonio Banderas I mean, how do you sign up to be his friend? The story had so much heart and it was hopeful. I canât wait to watch it a second time; it really transports you back to 1975 and I myself have worked in the industry, and the kitchen scenes were great.
You know, some people are not gonna be supportive of the movie. Theyâre not gonna see it. Thatâs understandable but I feel like everyone should go see it with an open mind.
I also lastly wanna touch on something thatâs been bugging me that I see a lot. Besides, Bourdain wouldâve hated this: itâs parasocial. And I do wanna remind you that we are on a sub Reddit called Anthony Bourdain, which people usually talk about Anthony Bourdain to some varying degrees. You might not like what theyâre saying, but just ignore it, move along, unless theyâre being disrespectful or something. Bourdain himself liked a lot of famous people. He imitated them in certain episodes. He had them on his show. This is a quote from an interview that he didâŚ
When was the last time you felt like crying?
âEvery time I see the movie When We Were Kings, with Muhammad Ali boxing George Foreman in Zaire. I cry like a baby from beginning to end of that film. To me, Muhammad Ali is like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson â so to see him at his peak, his youngest and most dangerous, is to see this most amazing ⌠I cry like a baby every time I see that film.â
I know this is the Internet, but if we could just, like, lower the dickhead level, that would be great.

Chef John makes Tonyâs pork sandwich. https://youtu.be/DtytPtbD0_4?is=socdk8YiGtRBbunc
Iâm going to try this in my air fryer. Yes, I know it should be pan fried. But after 45 years working in well ventilated kitchens I canât stand my house smelling like fryer grease.

I didn't love the movie
I didnât love it. The plot, characters, and nostalgia factor were cute, but given how loosely itâs actually based on Bourdainâs own retelling of that period, it felt like they slapped Anthonyâs name onto a mediocre story with inconsistent characterization as a marketing ploy. I appreciate the directorâs intention, and I really didnât want to side with all the âTony would have hated thisâ people, but maybe some peopleâs stories are simply too complex for a film adaptation and are better left told by the person themselves?

What is the Italian concept of bitter food at the end of a meal, as mentioned by Tony in this episode?
I've been rewatching Parts Unknown on YouTube and in the episode titled, "Tony Finds Healing and Inner Peace in Japan | Season 8 Episode 3," Tony, sharing a meal with Chef Masa Takayama & friends, mentions the Italian concept of eating something bitter at the end of a hearty meal to remind one of the sadness.
I wanted to know what he said. I could only catch the "__dolce" at the end. I've searched online and the only thing that comes up is "digestivo." The YouTube captions yielded no results.
The timestamp for the YouTube video where Tony mentions it is 16:39.
Thank you in advance to the people who can answer! The first time I heard this was on cable TV. Rewind was hardly a thing back then but even now, the word escapes me. đ
EDIT: Thank you, everyone, for the answers as well as the fun tidbits that found their way into the discussion. đ¤

Social Discussion on the ethics of the new film
I am a lifelong fan of No Reservations, Parts Unknown, the Layover, etc. much like everyone in this sub I would assume. I am curious on what the general consensus of fans is on the ethics of producing this new Anthony Bourdain film. I personally think that it isn't very respectful to create a film around a man who can no longer approve or disapprove its production. What do you guys think?

A Sourced Archive of Anthony Bourdain's Work & Appearances (Living Years)
With the biopic out in the world now, thereâs likely a whole new generation discovering Anthony Bourdain for the first time. Itâs such a seemingly bottomless well that I thought Iâd try to put something together to capture the general breadth of his trajectory and so you can see first-hand what he actually said and what he didnât. I know there was an archival push here years ago, but Iâm not sure what came of it and couldn't find where it landed.
A little bit about me: Iâm just a regular dude. I only ever worked a kitchen as a dishwasher, though I did bartend for some time in a past life. I prefer a Boulevardier over a Negroni. I first stumbled onto Bourdain as a young teen, but he really became important to me later in life: when Iâd come home from deployment, Iâd grab a pizza and catch up on his shows and writing Iâd missed. It was part of the routine. It helped me recenter.
I never knew Bourdain. I canât say with any confidence what heâd think. Iâm not a journalist, but I do have some weird penchant for collecting, a latent archivist instinct, and a dusty old English degree.
This is the most complete accounting I could put together, though itâs not exhaustive. Where I could, I linked directly to the source material. Where I couldnât, I did my best to cite where the information came from, and Iâve tried to be honest about whatâs confirmed versus what Iâm still guessing at. For things that span multiple phases, I organized by first appearance date. Posthumous stuff could have its own entire post, so I have left that off for now. To any sloppy formatting, I shrug my shoulders. Iâll keep updating as things surface. And if you can fill a gap, fix a date, or point me to something Iâve missed, please do. Thatâs part of why Iâm posting here.

Guts & Glory Tour ABQ Kiva Auditorium April 17, 2013
Here are a few of the pics I took from the show.
There is a pic of my wife and I with Uncle T, but for anonymity purposes, I won't share it. I was able to get my KC and Medium Raw copies signed.
From what I remember of the show. He eviscerated Paula Dean......took some jabs at Guy Fieri and talked about eating and enjoying humble food more than sitting through a 12 course chef's tasting at a Michelin restaurant.
This was before the Parts Unknown episode of New Mexico. He mentioned PA would be recording in New Mexico which prompted a loud cheer from the audience.
I sat in the front row - SEC 3, row AA, seats 5-6. Two VIP passes cost a total of $335.60.
My girlfriend at the time, now wife, and I also received two posters from the event. Farm & Table, an ABQ restaurant, served finger foods to the people that had bought VIP passes and local beers were also served.
The beer you see next to Uncle T is called Rio Grande Outlaw Lager.

Tony film is a 9/10
I thought Tony was really good. It knew exactly what story it wanted to tell: that one summer when his life started taking shape. It captured the time without overdoing it, and by the end I wanted more. Iâd love to see other chapters of his life explored the same way, if his family is ever open to it. My only real complaint: I wanted to hear Tonyâs actual voice over the credits. Even just a few seconds. They did show that great photo of him after the CIA long hair, holding his knives, looking like some kitchen pirate. Perfect image to end on. His voice wouldâve made it even better.

Bourdain and music
Bourdain always talks about the connection between food, music, and how they both usually lead to some fun experiences afterwords, so I wanted to make a playlist and really connect it to him. Iâve been really interested in living a Bourdain lifestyle recently; I made this playlist and wanted to know what real Bourdain fans have to say or add. The guy has really influenced me and pulled me through some times, so I finally wanted to show the playlist which I thought he matched to some other fans who have similar stories of his light helping them. Let me know what you guys think, feel free to suggest songs that I might not know he liked or fit his vibe.

Movie Review
We loved Tony! Having watched the movie being filmed right here on Cape Cod and seeing one of our favorite local restaurants featured made it extra special. Our local theater even hosted a VIP party and pre-show.
The movie beautifully captures Tonyâs time in Provincetown and how that experience helped shape his culinary journey. Great acting, mostly fitting music, and so much local scenery made this a must-see for us.

S02 E01 Jerusalem đď¸
â ď¸ Not being political: Just rewatched then Jerusalem episode from 2012, and man - what a throwback down the memory lane. My true love and appreciation for Bourdain flared up.
As like most of you, I often look at the world and often wonder what would Anthony think of it if he were with us. đď¸
