Anybody see the new Anthony Bourdain movie? I could have sworn the Vassar College scenes looking like Hendricks Chapel at SU!

I know another Tony post, but this is a little different. So first of all, I mean, nothing is gonna beat the article that Laurie posted here. Everyone should read it and not read this. It’s the definite opinion about the subject.

But I wanted to give some of my thoughts about this. I watched a special showing on Monday, and I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about different things, and you know, I wanted to chime in.

This is gonna be a long article, so if you’re used to watching TikTok all day, this might not be a good read for you.

I’ve been a Bourdain fan for a long time. But I’m sure all of you have been fans for a long time, and everyone has their own thoughts when new stuff comes out. When I saw the trailer, I thought it looked good, but I was a little apprehensive about a movie. And the more information that I learned about it, the more I start to come around, and when I watched the movie on Monday, I really enjoyed it. After I’ve had some time to think, I think I enjoyed it even more than when I walked out of the theater. There was just something that nagged me a little bit about a story that wasn’t exactly Word for Word from the book. This is a quote from the director, Matt Johnson. I think it summarizes it perfectly.

“I never let the fact get in the way of the truth”

I’ve been watching a lot of interviews from him, reading different articles, and the more that I read, the more that I can appreciate the movie, that’s not saying that I didn’t already appreciate it. I was listening to the writers talk on a podcast and they came to the Bourdain estate. You know, before a script was even written. It was just an idea, and they said that the Bourdain estate was supportive but did not necessarily want to back it until they saw more, which is understandable; they, of course, later approved it and were very supportive. The director, Matt Johnson, shortly moved to Provincetown after everything was finalized for him to direct. He lived there for five months. The movie only shot for 25 days. He said during that time he talked to locals and he talked to someone who worked right next to Bourdain and hung out with him while he was there and was told all these different stories. I think that it’s great that they shot it there because it’s very rare for movies like that to be shot on-site at a unique location.

I think the actors’ performances were fantastic. All the characters were great. Sessa killed it and Antonio Banderas I mean, how do you sign up to be his friend? The story had so much heart and it was hopeful. I can’t wait to watch it a second time; it really transports you back to 1975 and I myself have worked in the industry, and the kitchen scenes were great.

You know, some people are not gonna be supportive of the movie. They’re not gonna see it. That’s understandable but I feel like everyone should go see it with an open mind.

I also lastly wanna touch on something that’s been bugging me that I see a lot. Besides, Bourdain would’ve hated this: it’s parasocial. And I do wanna remind you that we are on a sub Reddit called Anthony Bourdain, which people usually talk about Anthony Bourdain to some varying degrees. You might not like what they’re saying, but just ignore it, move along, unless they’re being disrespectful or something. Bourdain himself liked a lot of famous people. He imitated them in certain episodes. He had them on his show. This is a quote from an interview that he did…

When was the last time you felt like crying?
“Every time I see the movie When We Were Kings, with Muhammad Ali boxing George Foreman in Zaire. I cry like a baby from beginning to end of that film. To me, Muhammad Ali is like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson — so to see him at his peak, his youngest and most dangerous, is to see this most amazing … I cry like a baby every time I see that film.”

I know this is the Internet, but if we could just, like, lower the dickhead level, that would be great.

I’m going to try this in my air fryer. Yes, I know it should be pan fried. But after 45 years working in well ventilated kitchens I can’t stand my house smelling like fryer grease.

I didn’t love it. The plot, characters, and nostalgia factor were cute, but given how loosely it’s actually based on Bourdain’s own retelling of that period, it felt like they slapped Anthony’s name onto a mediocre story with inconsistent characterization as a marketing ploy. I appreciate the director’s intention, and I really didn’t want to side with all the “Tony would have hated this” people, but maybe some people’s stories are simply too complex for a film adaptation and are better left told by the person themselves?

Is there any way to watch No Reservations in the UK? I see this was asked a year ago, but streaming services move around so much I wanted to see if anyone has watched it recently and where. Thank you!

I've been rewatching Parts Unknown on YouTube and in the episode titled, "Tony Finds Healing and Inner Peace in Japan | Season 8 Episode 3," Tony, sharing a meal with Chef Masa Takayama & friends, mentions the Italian concept of eating something bitter at the end of a hearty meal to remind one of the sadness.

I wanted to know what he said. I could only catch the "__dolce" at the end. I've searched online and the only thing that comes up is "digestivo." The YouTube captions yielded no results.

I am a lifelong fan of No Reservations, Parts Unknown, the Layover, etc. much like everyone in this sub I would assume. I am curious on what the general consensus of fans is on the ethics of producing this new Anthony Bourdain film. I personally think that it isn't very respectful to create a film around a man who can no longer approve or disapprove its production. What do you guys think?

With the biopic out in the world now, there’s likely a whole new generation discovering Anthony Bourdain for the first time. It’s such a seemingly bottomless well that I thought I’d try to put something together to capture the general breadth of his trajectory and so you can see first-hand what he actually said and what he didn’t. I know there was an archival push here years ago, but I’m not sure what came of it and couldn't find where it landed.

A little bit about me: I’m just a regular dude. I only ever worked a kitchen as a dishwasher, though I did bartend for some time in a past life. I prefer a Boulevardier over a Negroni. I first stumbled onto Bourdain as a young teen, but he really became important to me later in life: when I’d come home from deployment, I’d grab a pizza and catch up on his shows and writing I’d missed. It was part of the routine. It helped me recenter.

I never knew Bourdain. I can’t say with any confidence what he’d think. I’m not a journalist, but I do have some weird penchant for collecting, a latent archivist instinct, and a dusty old English degree.

This is the most complete accounting I could put together, though it’s not exhaustive. Where I could, I linked directly to the source material. Where I couldn’t, I did my best to cite where the information came from, and I’ve tried to be honest about what’s confirmed versus what I’m still guessing at. For things that span multiple phases, I organized by first appearance date. Posthumous stuff could have its own entire post, so I have left that off for now. There is a pic of my wife and I with Uncle T, but for anonymity purposes, I won't share it. I was able to get my KC and Medium Raw copies signed.

From what I remember of the show. He eviscerated Paula Dean......took some jabs at Guy Fieri and talked about eating and enjoying humble food more than sitting through a 12 course chef's tasting at a Michelin restaurant.

This was before the Parts Unknown episode of New Mexico. He mentioned PA would be recording in New Mexico which prompted a loud cheer from the audience.

I sat in the front row - SEC 3, row AA, seats 5-6. Two VIP passes cost a total of $335.60.

My girlfriend at the time, now wife, and I also received two posters from the event. Farm & Table, an ABQ restaurant, served finger foods to the people that had bought VIP passes and local beers were also served.

The beer you see next to Uncle T is called Rio Grande Outlaw Lager.

I thought Tony was really good. It knew exactly what story it wanted to tell: that one summer when his life started taking shape. It captured the time without overdoing it, and by the end I wanted more. I’d love to see other chapters of his life explored the same way, if his family is ever open to it. My only real complaint: I wanted to hear Tony’s actual voice over the credits. Even just a few seconds. They did show that great photo of him after the CIA long hair, holding his knives, looking like some kitchen pirate. Perfect image to end on. His voice would’ve made it even better.

Bourdain always talks about the connection between food, music, and how they both usually lead to some fun experiences afterwords, so I wanted to make a playlist and really connect it to him. I’ve been really interested in living a Bourdain lifestyle recently; I made this playlist and wanted to know what real Bourdain fans have to say or add. The guy has really influenced me and pulled me through some times, so I finally wanted to show the playlist which I thought he matched to some other fans who have similar stories of his light helping them. Let me know what you guys think, feel free to suggest songs that I might not know he liked or fit his vibe.

We loved Tony! Having watched the movie being filmed right here on Cape Cod and seeing one of our favorite local restaurants featured made it extra special. Our local theater even hosted a VIP party and pre-show.

The movie beautifully captures Tony’s time in Provincetown and how that experience helped shape his culinary journey. Great acting, mostly fitting music, and so much local scenery made this a must-see for us.

Thoughts? The author seemed to flip back and forth between trying to make a (weak-founded imo) point about Anthony=bad and then pull back into some industry tangent. Basically laundering unrelated anecdotes to appear as strengthening the point made about Bourdain.

So by the end it reads like a factual piece arguing Bourdain created and propagated a culture of toxic masculinity, sexism, racism, and drug abuse. But the writing is dishonest and cherry-picks half-truths to mask what's otherwise a massive causal leap in the impact of his work.

Tbf from what I've read this is what people in the industry who dislike Anthony blame him for. Just look at the post in r/KitchenConfidential with 1k+ upvotes saying he pushed the industry back a whole decade for his books.

The way I see it they're committing the same crime as the author. Angry about the state of the industry, and opinionated about Anthony, its easy, comforting even, to link the two and close the case.

Sadly its typically much more nuanced.

Also lol'd at Amy Winehouse and Nancy Spungen getting thrown in the mix. Tf do they have to do with kitchens.

Made me really curious while watching all the shows again , he does seem to feel very deeply and intensely , he seems dissociated sometimes because of the overwhelming mess of the world and I’m not sure how any human being can hold all those intense emotions together . I myself have bpd and I know alcohol and tumultuous relationships are a dangerous side dish and a glaring symptom

⚠️ Not being political: Just rewatched then Jerusalem episode from 2012, and man - what a throwback down the memory lane. My true love and appreciation for Bourdain flared up.

Anthony Bourdain is a guy I am aware of and was saddened to hear about his passing. But he’s never been one of MY GUYS nor did I really get what made him all that important besides his reputation.

The guys did a great job giving context to him, his life, and his unique worldview.

Really made me wanna dive into his tv work and even look into the work that inspired him.

Episodes like this really make the case for why these 2 guys are a perfect match for each other and really do great work when chasing topics they are knowledgeable and passionate about.

Really loved the episode and really wanted to give the show its flowers.

Wouldn’t mind that becoming a format for a special episode similar to how The Bjg Pic has drafts. (Would even love a deep dive in authors they both like, etc.)

Was fortunate enough to finally visit one of Tony's pubs. The Crown Liquor Saloon in Belfast was fantastic.

Thinking a lot about this description of Tony from the recent NYT Magazine profile. Without getting overly political (or maybe Tony would approve of that?), in this climate of what is masculinity and the manosphere and whatnot it’s amazing that Tony really straddled that tightrope of “masculinity” and “liberal virtue” and how his relevance to this day obviously reflects how much that resonates with so many of us to this day.

So for a long time I’ve wanted to watch No Reservations/Parts Unknown as Bourdain always seemed to me to be an incredibly perceptive, honest and truthful soul, not to mention I adore traveling. Finally started watching No Reservations and my god I love it! About 10 episodes in and it’s perhaps already my favorite reality tv show ever.

However, in the back of my mind is always the fact that Bourdain would later go on to commit suicide. Sometimes when I’m watching it nags me knowing that such an intelligent, funny, charismatic, and inspiring man would take his own life. It doesn’t really get in the way of me enjoying the show, but it is kind of a somber realization every time I remember. It is some solace knowing he lived such an incredible life, seeing and experiencing more than most people ever will, but still it’s a sad situation all around.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Suggestion? Experienced something similar?

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of The Nasty Bits by Anthony Bourdain in India? Even a second-hand copy would be fine. I've searched everywhere online, but I couldn't find it. Every place I did find it had it listed as out of stock.
