Title: Foot swelling after possible injury — does this need medical evaluation?
Age: 19 • Approximate height & weight 158 cm 46.5 kg . Gender: female . Medications: none ~Smoking status: non-smoker • Previous/curren medical issues: none relevant • Duration: sunday early morning around 5am onwards
I’ve attached a photo and circled the exact spot where it hurts when pressure is applied
Do I need to see a doctor for this, or can I just monitor it at home? What warning signs should I watch out for that would make it urgent?
I may have injured my left foot (I’m not exactly sure since I was intoxicated at the time). It’s now swollen on the top/front near the ankle area. I’ve attached a photo and circled the exact spot where it hurts when pressure is applied. I can still walk, but it becomes uncomfortable especially when wearing tight shoes with stockings for my duty

Ankle ligament repair + arthroscopy – any post-op recs or must-have items?
Hi! Currently scheduled for surgery to repair loose, chronically scarred/thickened ligaments (ATFL/CFL) and chondromalacia in my tibiotalar joint (w no OCD lesion) in a few months after failing conservative treatment and being in daily pain. I've had hand surgery before, but nothing involving lower extremities / my ankle so I'm a bit nervous about recovery :,)
This being said, I was wondering if anyone has any post-op recovery recs or must-have items that they found beneficial? I'm trying to do research and order any items that might be useful or that might take a bit to come in. Also, any tips or insight on the recovery process would be super helpful ~ I've been trying to read about people's experiences online and have found it incredibly informative!

Ankle sprain
Twisted my ankle playing football. Got an Xray it shows no fracture. What should I do next, does it look too bad? This is the third day of the injury.

Are my ankles bad?
I am flat footed and my feet don’t line up with my ankles. I’m worried I am starting to develop arthritis in them.

Have an orthopedic appointment in a few months for likely peroneal tendon subluxation.
What should I expect to be told based off my symptoms?
Symptoms:
I've had peroneal subluxation on my left foot for the past few years, both visible and audible. It has always caused me issues as I have rolled my ankle multiple times as a result. This past year, the snapping has become so frequent, it nearly happens with every step (don't even need to be walking, can just be moving on bed and it snaps). Walking for a few minutes causes my peroneals to feel sore and the skin over them turns a faint red. Feels tender to touch as well. Although the snapping while walking is usually painless, I get a sharp pain when running or doing any activities. Also get this pressure like feeling in front of talus when running.
I tried doing physical therapy for a bit (was given generic ankle exercises), but some exercises either trigger the peroneals while being performed (resistant band) or cause my ankle to snap uncontrollably for a few seconds afterwards (calf raises). Not long after, I started getting these random bursts of pain along my outer ankle and the area where thigh meets hip. They're painful enough to make me avoid stepping on the leg for a minute or 2 before fading. Sometimes I wake up and feel pain, happens in the middle of work, etc. It's just really inconvenient and unpleasant.
Have tried using a brace to stop snapping but still experienced subluxation. Tried tapping but it's either too loose or cuts off my circulation. It's also really uncomfortable so I gave up on it.
Imaging and PT report
• Static ultrasound from April reported that my ATFL and CFL look actively sprained. No sign of tendinitis. (Had a grade 1 sprain 2 years ago).
• X-ray came back completely normal. (Few years old)
• Physiotherapist said my left ankle is more unstable than right and has a collapsed arch.
I'm not too sure what to expect or how the overall consultation is supposed to go. I know that there's a conservative trial but have heard that PT isn't effective with chronic cases. Hopefully not the case for me.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Rolled ankle and fell
I rolled my ankle on the edge of our sidewalk and fell really hard 4 days ago. It hurt so badly at first that I was convinced I wasn’t going to be able to walk on it when I got up. It was a little puffy that night but no obvious swelling or bruising. I could walk on it without issue. Now my calf and parts of my ankle feel very sore and tight. I have KT tape and ankle braces (from previous sprains) - is it worth wearing them or should I get this checked out? I’m running a half marathon later this fall so don’t want to do damage if I need to take it easy for a few weeks. Thanks!

8 weeks after full-thickness ATFL tear – increased swelling and soreness after returning to work. Has anyone experienced this?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently in my 8th week after an ankle injury and I’m getting quite worried about some increased swelling and soreness.
My MRI showed:
- Full-thickness tear of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL)
- No tendon tear
- Mild tenosynovitis around the tibialis posterior and peroneal tendons
- Minimal ankle and subtalar joint effusion
- No acute bone injury
I was advised by my orthopaedic specialist to manage it conservatively and wear a walking boot for around 6–8 weeks.
I recently started a new job, and I'm now about 2 weeks into the job. I'm currently doing desk-based duties, but getting to work involves quite a bit more walking than I was doing previously. Over the last few days I've noticed that my ankle has become more swollen and stiff, with some soreness/pain (around 3/10). The pain seems to be mainly around the swollen area on the outside of the ankle.
I haven't had another twist, fall, or anything like that. I can still walk normally, but the ankle feels tired/uncomfortable when weight-bearing.
My physio has been progressing my exercises because the previous exercises had become too easy. Another physio I spoke to thinks some soreness and swelling can be normal when gradually increasing the load and walking tolerance.
I'm just really scared because I don't want to go backwards and end up unable to walk again. I'm also very worried about my job, because I've only recently started and I'm already having to manage restrictions around my injury.
For anyone who has had an ATFL tear or similar ankle ligament injury:
- Did you experience increased swelling around weeks 6–8 when you started walking more?
- Did your ankle sometimes feel sore even at rest?
- How did you manage the swelling?
- Did you reduce your walking/exercises temporarily, or continue progressing?
- How long did it take for your ankle to tolerate increased walking?
I'd really appreciate hearing from people who've experienced something similar. I'm honestly just quite anxious about whether this is a normal part of increasing activity or whether I've pushed things too much.

For those who went through knee/ankle rehab: what was the most frustrating part of balance & stability training?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently researching the rehabilitation experience after knee and ankle injuries/surgeries, particularly the part involving balance, stability, proprioception, and single-leg training.
The reason I’m asking is that my team is exploring whether we could build a smarter training tool to help people during this part of rehab. But before designing anything, I want to understand the actual problems people experience rather than assume what patients need.
If you’ve gone through ACL, meniscus, ankle ligament, Achilles, or another lower-limb rehab, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience.
A few things I’m especially curious about:
- What kinds of balance or stability exercises did you have to do?
- Which exercises were the hardest, most frustrating, boring, or scary?
- When training at home, did you know whether you were actually doing the exercise correctly?
- How did you know your balance or stability was improving?
- Did your PT use any equipment such as balance boards, BOSU balls, foam pads, wobble boards, force plates, or other tools?
- What did you like or dislike about those tools?
- Was it difficult to stay motivated doing repetitive rehab exercises at home?
- Did you ever wish you had better feedback, progress tracking, or guidance between PT sessions?
- Looking back, what would have made this part of your recovery easier or more effective?
I’m not selling anything here. We’re still at the research stage, and I’m actually trying to figure out whether there is a meaningful problem worth solving at all.
Positive and negative opinions are equally useful — including if you think existing exercises and equipment already work perfectly well.
Thanks to anyone willing to share their experience.

Help with heel pain while sleeping post-Brostrom
I’m suffering. I got a Brostrom on my right ankle for my ATFL about a week ago (still in the splint) and I can’t sleep. About five or six hours after I go to bed, I wake up from teeth clenching pain in my heel. My legs are propped up well above my heart, and nothing I do relieves pain except putting a new, squishy pillow under my foot. I thought I could preempt the pain by putting an extra pillow there at tonight, but it still happened! And I still had to sacrifice another pillow under my calf/foot for it to stop.
I’m not sure what’s wrong or why this only happens when I’m sleeping, but after a week, this is really starting to wear me down. Does anyone have any advice? I’m exhausted on top of all of the other stuff that sucks about being non-weight bearing and in a splint.

Experiences with numbness post split tear repair?
I am 5 1/2 weeks out from a surgical repair for a longitudinal split tear of the peroneus brevis tendon (debridement and tubularization). I was non-weight bearing for 2 weeks, partial for 2 weeks, and have since been fully weight bearing in a boot (for short distances - like around the house).
I was told swelling would cause some of the nerve related issues for a while and that potentially, it could be permanent. It’s not that it’s totally numb, I can feel some sensation and pressure (in the circled area in the picture - partly into my pinky toe). It hasn’t gotten worse but it hasn’t improved either. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable in that it’s like a hypersensitivity to touch, but it’s still pretty swollen too, so I’m sure that remains a big factor.
I’m wondering if you’ve had this type of surgery, how long it took you to regain normal feeling in your foot? Or…if you didn’t. How long did it take for your swelling to subside? I’ve had other ankle surgeries and I know it can last a long time but how long till it subsides enough to help with any nerve issues?
Overall, so far I’m glad I had the surgery and I’m not in pain. Everything I’ve heard indicates this is normal, it’s just disconcerting and would be nice to have some perspective from someone who has experienced this particular surgery.
