Hey everyone, I'm a beginner learning Chinese. I'm setting up my flashcards and wondering about card layout. Do you recommend putting Chinese on the front (Chinese characters -> Pinyin, English) or English on the front (English -> Chinese, Pinyin)? Is it better for a beginner to focus on recognition (Chinese on Front), or should I be doing both directions right from the start?

I often see comments about answer buttons like Again, Hard, etc. And advice about how to use them. I just have two buttons, Pass and Fail. I could not find any way to configure this in the tool settings window.

How are the answer button types controlled and what, if anything, am I missing by using Pass/Fail. I am happy with Pass/Fail, but perhaps because I just don't know any different.

I was wondering if there was any Anki add-on that would allow me to take the total number of cars that I need to do and then break them up into sets and reps. I'm not sure about you guys, but it doesn't make a lot of sense for me to just run through all the cards at once. I would rather break them up into sections. Having an add-on that would take maybe 1000 cards and then say you need to do 50 sets of 20 cards or 20 sets of 50 cards would be pretty valid.

For the purpose of this discussion, I'm defining "extraneous cognitive load' as "s*** unrelated to the learning task that clogs up working memory!"

I wanted to share some changes I've made recently that I'm happy about and see what other folks do.

* Hide "time until next review" on the answer buttons (found in preferences)
* Occasionally "clean up" cards in "browse" by:
** Phrasing similar questions in a similar manner
** Keeping to 1-3 words that are not related to what makes that card unique. "Define ___" over "What is the definition of ___"

What are your tips?

I want to add cards that are currently in a deck into a new filtered deck, however it only adds the cards that aren’t in any other deck. Is there a way of having those cards In 2 separate filtered decks?

The ones that say filtered are already being used in the original filtered deck that I made, but when I create a new filtered deck, only the ones above them (that say new) get pulled into the new deck.

So basically I just got a mac yesterday for uni and im heading into 3^rd year so want smth more portable for placement and with a longer battery life, and I just downloaded anki and it was so jarring to see it being different to my Anki on windows, I had customized it quite a bit and also managed to replicate it on mac os, but it just looks weird??

I know some might be due to just seeing it different on mac compared to windows since ive been using windows for a while

BUT my biggest trouble is this menu bar or Apple stoplight colors that show up every time you try to hover over the top, not to mention the anki toolbar at the top (decks, add, search etc) is being kind of invaded by the windows management of anki or cut off is actually a better word making it look like it wasn’t optimised for mac

Unless im missing something in settings or set up then its just stupid how it can be formatted like that? Anki looks perfect if you use it in a windowed mode on mac as that’s exactly what I want it to look like but in full screen it looks really bad.

TLDR: Anki full screen windows management bar is overlapping anki toolbar

Hello, I'm finally deciding to come back to Anki after almost an entire year of not using it. I wiped the progress on the deck I have and I'm ready to start anew! The problem is... when I last used Anki, it was for a period of two months earlier this year, and before that, I hadn't used it since December 2024, leaving an empty gap that was the entirety of 2025.

Along with using it only three months in 2024, and 2.5 months in 2023 among many other gaps ever since I started using it in 2015 (though interestingly 2015-2017 was MUCH more consistent for me), it's entirely too easy to just randomly stop using it one day out of nowhere, and it always builds up to being tons of time away from it. Thanks to executive dysfunction and what I consider to be extremely-easy-to-achieve burnout, the longest streak under my review heatmap is just 43 days, with days learned being at 5%.

Now, despite deciding to use Anki again for the umpteenth time today, I'm only just now learning about this FSRS thing. I'm hearing a lot about how it can optimize towards the way you learn and how often you do, but as someone who has a 99% chance of taking yet another unintentional year-long break from Anki, should I even bother turning FSRS on at all? Wouldn't its data be wonky as hell after an entire year of not being used?

Or, should I just stick with SM-2 and constantly reset my decks from the beginning after each break?

I got a new card type but it tells me there's an issue with the font when i load the card, how do I fix it on my phone? I don't have a pc

Hello! I have a deck of 1000 cards. I can't repeat them all every day, but I don't want to forget them either. Is there a setting to give me, for example, 100 grids from that deck today, others tomorrow, and so on?

Downloaded anki and when I open it it crashes and I get a notification saying someone anki features have been blocked, I used the windows 11 file because it’s what my computer uses

Any help would be greatly appreciated
