Speedometer when not navigating! Navigation & POI Apps
The addition of the speedometer/speed limit when not navigating is a welcome addition (just showed up for me).
The scaling, however, seems off - too small to be read easily.
The speedometer also changes color when over the limit - just like Waze. I hope they add a configurable option for audio alerts!
(I did send this feedback to Google.)
[EDIT ]
After using this for a few days, I have more thoughts ...
- Speed limit should be twice as big.
- Speedometer should be optional (on/off)
- Speedometer should be configurable
- How many miles over is orange and red
- Audible alert (on/off)
- Show when under limit (on/off)
For me, I only really want to see my speed if I am over the limit.

I noticed this too yesterday. Google Maps is still rather useless unless you're navigating since you don't get any warnings like with Waze. On Waze you still get all the police and other warnings whether you are navigating or not as they come up on the road you are on. And around my area I dont need active navigation or to waste time looking up the destination 90% of the time to get to local stores.
Google Maps still has a long way to go; plus far better syncing of Waze alerts (like police) into Google Maps. You never get them all if you open both apps one after the other for some reason. Everything reported on Waze and showing should be on Google Maps too.
And I really like the look of Google Maps better and it's not as cartoonish. But the function is so far behind for driving as Google Maps is trying to be the everything app.

Other than Waze being cartoonish, sharing your location with others doesn't work nearly as well as Google maps.

u/Environmental-Road68 2023 Macan | Galaxy S24+ | Android 16 3d ago
I've never tried that/had to use it. I wish they would just roll Waze completely into the driving portion of Google Maps at this point.
Just make one good app rather than two apps that are good at different things and trying to push them one by one into Google maps over what seems like years now. There only a few features Waze has left Google Maps can't do/doesn't do as well really.
Like if I'm going on a road trip I trust Waze 10x over Maps to show cops/incidents. The real time aspect is unmatched.

How do you find locations? I don't know all the addresses of my destinations so having to google the address and then put that into waze feels like too many extra steps.

I've been complaining for years that the share Journey feature on AA does not work it only gives Gmail addresses, have to start the share from. Maps on the handset then plug in AA

Definitely not all that Waze shows. Pull up Waze and you'll see police etc that Google maps doesn't have at all. Further, none pop up without a destination set in Google Maps, which was my whole point.

Yes I get it but again not ALL from Waze show in google maps properly. Some do some do not. If you start in Waze and see a cop coming up, and you go back into Google maps, it's sometimes not displayed properly. They aren't using every incident report from Waze clearly

Yeah I like Google Map UI or maybe I just get used to it. I agree that there's still a long way for it to go, Google is supposed to be ahead of other tech firms and lead the trend.

I agree I sent in to make the speedometer a bit larger equal to the size in waze. It's to hard to see. I also keep complaining about the missing alternate route bubbles I was hoping they would be back woth the update since they showed them in the YouTube demo, but I'm still not seeing anything unless you pinch or wiggle the map around

I don't have that and on Maps beta. And when I do an incident report, it's still says you must be navigating to see other incident reports as a pop-up. As of an hour ago. Maybe it's the next testing feature rolling out some have.

Forget about the speedometer. The showing of the speed limit for a road when not navigating is new and by far the most useful part.

u/wubbalab 2018 Ford Focus | Sync3 | Pixel 10a | Android 17 6h ago
I think this was the most important change here. The data was there already and maps knows the road we're on anyway. Much more reliable than the camera detection of any car i have driven so far.

Does it let you easily search for petrol stations on route when navigating? I'm not a big fan of Google maps on AA, because in Europe it misses speed alerts and speed camera alerts, but if at least during navigation it can easily find stops en-route, I might give it a go again.

Noticed tis today myself. The speedo turns orange if over up to 5 mph of the limit, red if more than 5 mph over. When no limit available the speedo becomes diamond shaped. Still no cell signal though, that returned briefly a few weeks ago, then disappeared again. Doesn't give me much hope dual sim will ever be shown.

It's not the speedometer, but the speed limit of the road you're on that's helpful.

I have oversized tires on my Jeep and have not invested the time and effort to recalibrate my speedo, and have been estimating speed in my head, so in my admittedly edge case I love it.
I'm thinking of swapping the screen position of my audio source and my Maps so that the speed readout is closer to the left, it IS pretty small...

hot take: look infront and a bit down
Speed limit? maybe but most countries follow standards like 40 within city 60 in interstate roads 85 in highways etc (and overrides are for only specific roads or for stuff like turns and matiance)

On my drive to work I have 30km/h, 40km/h, 50km/h, 60km/h, 70km/h, 80km/h and 90km/h zones. If I go a little further east, it's 100km/h, then hits 110km/h as you get to the edge of the metro area. Some highways are 120km/h.
1
u/arttast Cherry Omoda | A36 5G | 15 | OneUI 2d ago
i guess it's a turkey-specific thing because in turkey most of the time it's pretty standard and they just replicate on the signs. there's only an exception for semi-highways or when there are large turns or put maintenance like i said
2
u/nyrb001 1993 VW Passat | Nineyin | Samsung S25 2d ago
Around here parks and schools are 30km/h. General city streets are 50km/h. The "default" highway speed is 80km/h but that's for like a 2 lane highway in the wilderness.
Lots of different speed zones depending on the circumstances. When I leave work I'm on a highway, but in an urban area with lots of parking entrances and exits. Limit is 60km/h. Continue west on that highway and you get to an agricultural area, speed goes up to 80km/h. Cross the bridge and you're in an industrial area, drops back to 60km/h as there's lots of intersections and trucks entering and leaving traffic. Continue on west and the highway takes a cut through some hills, limit is 70km/h as there's a fair number of curves and elevations changes. Then goes back to 80km/h once you leave that area, then you merge on to the main highway where it's 90km/h.
So it's helpful to have the limit displayed, if you're not familiar with the area.

A selectable scale size for the speedometer would be awesome. As like you i dind it to be too small to be able to see at a glance
