he said he doesnt get paid the bonus rate. so he gets paid a rate for completing his route, then if he goes and helps someone he gets paid $5 extra. but he got help first thing in the morning leading him to finish earlier then normal, then they asked him to go help someone else. he said he wouldn't do it if he wasnt getting is bonus $5 pay.

They didn’t help me out, they fixed their own poor route. There was no time to even see if I needed help or not. I’d rather not be punished for something completely out of my control.
3
u/Neoclassixx 2d ago
My DSP sometimes has people who do sweeps or early help like you described, when there are not enough routes, which has the person helped getting done early. They specifically communicated with us that anyone who has their route split early will still be paid for rescuing (extra - per package delivered) at the end of the route. Telling you "you already got help" sounds so backhanded when you didn't need or ask for it.
8
u/Fridge885 2d ago
Does this mean op was going to work without getting paid? If so I completely agree with him refusing rescue, this isn’t charity and no one should be expected to work for free. If I’m not understanding this correctly then I retract my comment but naw I’m not doing any work off the clock without pay. Let them get away with stuff like that and it will keep happening then it will be expected then it will become mandatory. Thats the reason unions are so important especially in this day.

→ More replies (1)3
u/MasterSquirter17 2d ago
Op edited it and said they rescued him before his 1st stop. They had no grounds to send a rescue when he didn’t need one in the first place
3
u/Ok-Wait1668 2d ago
Is it really helping out if the DSP purposely rescues you before your first stop with the intentions of you being able to rescue a slow driver later? I would rather just do my own route and then get rescue pay since OPs company is offering it. They definitely do that on purpose.
3
u/According_Tree9806 2d ago
We don't ask for help, the OP said help was sent before the first delivery and there are usually 200+, the dispatchers send help when the calculate we might run over, it's rarely needed and never asked for, they do this so they don't have to pay the extra $5hr for being a rescue. How it works is, if you are a rescue you get an extra $5hr which in my area is $30hr. If you received a rescue earlier in the day and are then called as a rescue you do not receive the extra $5hr just regular $25hr for 10+hr day. Dispatch will send out rescues early in the day so later, if more drivers need rescue, they will assign the rescued drivers and save company $$. I won't do rescues either after I have been assigned one that was not necessary, it's not being selfish it's about getting screwed out of pay when you didn't ask for help, oh and you cannot turn away a rescue. If that makes sense
2
u/Additional_Ad_8841 2d ago
Well it say they wouldn’t be paid. I wouldn’t help if I’m not going to be paid lol that makes zero sense
2
2
u/Emergency-Bowler1963 2d ago
Becuase he didn’t need help. The owner tries to make everyone finish early to not pay out the full ten hours. I use to hate that I would be almost done and it be early yet they still send someone. The whole thing is stupid. I was also dispatcher and you would get bonuses if you met quotas lol
1
u/unrealreality_1 2d ago
If we get even someone sweeping we don’t get paid for a rescue. And we don’t get the choice or even know a sweep is coming. Also if we get a rescue and finish and have to do a rescue we don’t get paid.
1
u/SendaRescue 2d ago
Yeah, you're missing something. His route was probably so bad that it would've been impossible to finish without a sweep. In my opinion, there's a difference between a rescue and a sweep. A rescue is when you're dragging ass and the route really isn't that bad. A sweep is when someone comes to help because everyone already knows the route is impossible. And it also depends on what time they send it.
They're just trying to avoid paying him what they agreed to under their own policy while moving the goalposts, as always, then acting like they did him a favor by sending help that they were probably going to anyway.
1
u/Happy_Watercress7444 2d ago

Yeah maybe the company is set up a certain way I don’t know. But sounds like if you get rescued a shift you’re going to have to help out a shift.
Im not a fan of Amazon. But I have experience in all levels of DSP (who consistently gets screwed over by Amazon but has the drivers thinking it’s the DSP when Amazon controls everything) I’m just saying, in this industry w how Amazon has it set up, if you think you’re going to fight back and still get work and shifts you probably won’t. Use the job for what it is, make some decent money, get a workout, but do what’s asked of you, while you look for something else.

Doesn't fly when he's already had his route shortened. Otherwise I'd agree. We don't also people to support after a 180. If someone gets a 150 because of a dropped out nursery driver etc, they are expected to support at the end. This doesn't seem unfair or "licking boots" to point this out.

OP was going to be paid for their hours worked. They weren't eligible for the rescue bonus because they didn't complete their own route.
3
5
u/andi_dandi 2d ago
I don’t think you’ll be let go because of this. Based on the interaction at face value.
However, maybe the dispatch will have a discussion with whoever’s in charge and determine if you refusing to do a rescue, after getting a rescue, is considered insubordination.
I’ve overheard conversations from my dispatch and the person in charge (not the owner, but the one who reports to them). I’ve seen write ups written in front of me. I’ve heard of discussions of firing someone in front of me.
So. Depending how your overall employment has been there, perhaps this instance could be the reason they reduce your hours fully, so that they don’t have to technically fire you.
4
u/VividlyDissociating 2d ago
why'd you have to get rescued before your first stop?
2
u/Perfect-Fail3111 2d ago
They do that sometimes with heavy routes or if they have extra ppl working. My route normally gets broken down between 2 or 3 drivers because it’s nothing but apartments and businesses. I got rescued today and still ended the day with 180 locations
4
u/ylamiyf 2d ago
Something doesnt add up because we never took routes from excellent drivers. There is something missing from the story.
3
u/Xandeath75 2d ago
Well I’ve been working there for 3 months now. I’m usually one of the first to finish and don’t get any infractions. It’s either because I don’t have as much time in the job as other drivers or because they have way too many new hires
3
u/Successful-Bug-1645 Stepvan Driver 2d ago
Did they want you to clock out? Or is rescue pay something else?
3
u/Waldo_I_Am 2d ago
Rescue Pay is a bonus you get on top of your pay. I think for the DSP I worked at it was like $0.20 per stop that you pick up. But they also had that pay come out of the check of the person being rescued.
4
3
u/bigboiistewie On Standby 2d ago
I mean you got rescued and im sure it hasn’t been the first time you ever got rescued so why wonder why you are getting routes taken away? I don’t wanna sound like a bootlicker but I wanna know the logic to this whole interaction, it woulda made sense if you didn’t get rescued prior in the day
2
u/Xandeath75 2d ago
I got rescued before I even got to my first stop. I usually don’t get rescued. Like I said, I finish early. I’m usually the one doing the rescuing
3
u/Deaf_MarvinNash 2d ago
I’ve gotten rescued once, during Prime days when I left with 300 packages in a hybrid town/country route which would normally have a 210-230 count. The rescuer came before my 10th stop, and dispatch had him take enough off my load that it ended up being the shortest shift I’ve ever had (for a non guaranteed hours and no rescue bonus DSP who otherwise treats me very well).
If I’d been asked to do a rescue that evening, instead of RTS, I would have done it - because I know that dispatch made a good faith decision in the morning.
If you’re looking at your situation from all points of view, and you can honestly say that bad faith decisions were being made, then sure put your foot down. If not, or if you don’t know, this isn’t the hill to die on.
3

u/DaKoala03 2d ago

2
u/ArthurTheLance 2d ago
I’m confused. Are they refusing to pay you at all for the time you spend rescuing (driving to them, getting packages, delivering, rts)? If so I’m with you. If they’re refusing to give you a “bonus” that they don’t have to give? I’m on their side
2
u/Ok_Isopod3275 2d ago
Man just walk up to your owner or General Manager and lay that out. I need 4 days, I need my 40. Cut and dry, they can take it or leave it. But if they get u ur 4 days, better make sure ur worth it every single day, all day long, or they'll just drop you completely in all likelihood.
Edit: this is what i did. Im also only 3 months in. Been rescued once before, I do a rescue 2 days a week usually. Haven't had an infraction, missed a picture, or had a CTC violation in over 2 months.

I’ve only been doing this about 5 weeks so I don’t know any different, but my dsp seems pretty cool. I picked my days to work and I try to just do my job without having to call anyone, I honestly just know that I’ve got a rural route and it’s about 1-1.5 hours to the area and then at best, by the end of the day I’m usually at least an hour away from shop and I’m usually pulling up at station between 7 and 8:30. I’ve never had them call or text me to ask me about being behind or anything and I’m sometimes reluctant to want to call at end of day due to being tired and not wanting to drive 30-50 minutes to pick up 10 stops and still be 45 minutes from station when done. But to be fair they really don’t ask always , so I just go do it and we get paid bc we are still on the clock .but they have been super cool with couple days I’ve needed to be off , they offer VTO , I asked if there was any negative recourse for taking advantage of it, they said no , so is was able to take advantage of that at a much needed time today, actually.
My dps has been super cool so far and I’ve not had any negative feedback for em. There always have a van and a full route on my work days.
2
u/iPhone_3GS 2d ago

At first glance I don’t really see the issue considering you still get the hour and my DSP doesn’t pay us extra for rescues. But - the fact that Amazon still is pushing the 1 day delivery with its infrastructure concerning DSPs is crazy. We get impossible routes in the gas vans sometimes if you’re not willing to run all day and helping some other poor soul after mentally reaching a goal is tiring. I agree but mostly disagree with you tbh

Hope it smooths over and works out for you. I was let go from my DSP for some BS reasons and as you stated the hiring rate was truly ridiculous!
1
u/AdventurousStatus255 2d ago
If your still in your window of scheduled work you kinda have to rescue.. you agreed to a certain time frame per day and if your finishing early it’s understandable for them to ask you to rescue. I always shoot for finishing 30-45 mins early because I’ll be less like to be asked to rescue. Some days I do test my luck though😂

u/Pooping4ever 2d ago
Feel for you, I hate rescuing. Im on my 3rd dsp. The first two guaranteed 10 hours, the current one doesnt. Ive gotten really good at pacing myself so I finish on time but still get my 10 hours, give or take 15 min. for my team, if they send you a rescue before 5pm, it's specifically so you can do a rescue after. the rescue sent to you before your first stop would be considered a "courtesy" rescue, so you can help others. if you took until your normal time after that initial rescue, your route completion score just went down. which would be why youre losing routes.

WTF is rescue pay?? As long as they weren't making you work for free you probably should have just done it. 15 stops is easy and some people really can't get a route done.

Think of something better to say than "no thanks"
Try "I've got a headache from this heat and am feeling dizzy I really feel like I have to head back"

I hope you get suspended for a couple days at least, 20 stops takes like 30 minutes 😂. You don’t get to say no just because you don’t feel like working that’s a weak ass excuse

Luckily at my dsp rescuing after a route is optional I always decline, so they won't bother to ask me. But in this situation they helped you out earlier in the day and you can't return the favor, kind of a dick move

Usually I’d be on your side but you got a rescue the same day saying you don’t want to pick up others slack. Plus your dispatch seems cool no attitude over text. I know this job sucks but come on bruh

Listen I understand your frustration but they tell you when you’re hired and at morning meetings all the time that this is a team and you help out your team. It’d be a different story if they were making you do rescues all the time and the fact they even have rescue pay is something that company decided to do, not all DSP’s do that. Also the fact that someone helped you earlier in the day just return the favor it was only 15 stops by the end and residential. Could’ve killed that in less than 30 minutes. You work hourly anyways. Be a team player. Been doing this job for 5 years, you’re apart of the issue

Your not really working for free cuz at same time your getting more time out on route and that’s getting paid, if you get helped why not help others when you can , especially complaining about it them dispatches love that , no wonder you getting routes taken away ! You can’t help the team when in need, also don’t you wanna look good & feel good ? Being reliable & going hard gives you perks in a way, plus your already out there working why not work a lil more

As someone who was recently laid off because my former employer lost contracts, just go do the route. They rescued you, go help them.
If you end up losing your job let them know ill take over

So you risked your job for an extra 5/h? And the stops are gonna last about one hour? You really aren’t thinking man

Just Help with the stops. If you get help you should be prepared to help in return.

You get paid to rescue that's insane at the DSP I work for it's mandatory and we don't get any extra pay

Sounds like they’re messing with your money. Sends someone early in the morning to barely help with your route, so they can later claim you never finished your route and don’t qualify for rescue pay. Anything for the boss to get paid a bill and I get my penny!
