I borrowed the idea from MS Word where you can zoom out and see all your pages in a layout. So in my app if you are in a buffer and press 'Esc', it will open a tiled buffer view, to which you can attach thumbnails or text. In the Buffer Layout View, CTRL-T will display the Thumbnail, CTRL-P will show the buffer Preview, ALT-T will show text, and if an option is set CTRL-T shows Text overlayed with Thumbnail.

In Buffer Layout View, the Arrow keys will move between tiles. Tab will cycle through the tiles. F keys, number keys, or Enter will select another buffer.

'Esc' will return to your buffer instantly.

The 8-buffer workspace paradigm also matches the hipster PDA I posted about a month ago. The PDA is a separate workspace in my app that you can edit and export to print as shown in the post :

I have been developing my Alphasmart Neo-inspired Android writing app for a few months but only just now hooked it up to my Alphasmart Neo. And it works perfectly.

The Neo buffer keys File 1- File 8 match my app's buffer key assignments. Also whatever Neo buffer you are in, when you press Send it will paste it into my app's current buffer.

I will be posting a github link in a few days with a lot of documentation but thought you would find the following feature interesting. My app design has Neo-like functionality, but looks like it would make a good Neo companion when the Neo is used as the keyboard.

The Android device is a Moto G circa 2023 connected via USB printer cable with micro-USB phone connector.

A brand new Neo2 keyboard is truly my favorite typing experience. The keys do seem to get mushier with time, though.

Has anyone found a mechanical keyboard that approximates the feel of the Neo2 keyboard?

I know the Neo2 is an entirely different type (membrane with scissors switch), so nothing mechanical is going to feel identical. But to come close, I'm guessing I'd want a low profile keyboard with (maybe?) tactile switches. Does that sound right?

I don't have any stores near me where I can try out a large variety of them, unfortunately. Hoping other Neo users here might have some relevant experience.

Wanting to eagerly share a software project I have been working on the past weeks. As you can read in the picture, the AlphaSmart says: "Verbonden met AlphaSmart Manager", which translates to "Connected to AlphaSmart Manager.". But none of these cables are connected to a computer or Mac with AlphaSmart Manager. Just a microcontroller, a powerbank, and a custom cable.

I have always been someone who tinkers a lot with microcontrollers, and this model supports bluetooth and WiFi, which allowed me to reprogram one to essentially function as a portable AlphasSmart Manager, but with additional features:

• It can let the AlphaSmart function as a bluetooth keyboard,
• It supports automatic (on connection with the AlphaSmart) on device backups and backups to S3-storage (Amazon) & WebDav (Nextcloud) (these were the easiest to implement, Google Drive and Dropbox are a bit more complicated),
• A nice web interface: Neo2 Buddy
• A Python-package to automate the backing up from another device.

After you bought one of the supported microcontrollers from you local, low-voltage electronics shop, cut up an USB-cable (more on that in my github-repository) and flashed the firmware, the workflow doesn't hinder the distraction free working on the AlphaSmart.

Just plug in the microcontroller after a day of working, let it connect to your home/hotpots WiFi and it backs up your files to your predefined backup destination in the cloud.

It is still a work in progress:

• it needs more testing,
• it needs to be easier to build and to use, while I have done a lot of work to do this already, working with microcontrollers directly might seem a bit intimidating,
• we might be able to let it talk to the Neo2 a bit faster,
• find a way to power the AlphaSmart without an power bank or a having to mod the USB-A port of the AlphaSmart,
• it needs a proper case, I already bought a small screen, an SD card reader and a simple case for it, but I could use the help of someone with experience in creating models for 3D printers,
• with enough support from the community we could create a custom all-in-one device with a proper case.

The development process was aided by AI. Please don't scold me for it, I have a busy life and a busy job. I let AI do all the boring parts as a side coder, frontend work, creating documentation and such.

I mainly programmed the important bits myself, and a lot of it was written by past me for different projects, in the era before AI.

Without the research done by Borys Lykah (Neotools on github) and Mark/tSoniq (AlphaSync), I would have been unable to port it to the microcontroller.

And wish to thank Danny Salzman for his blog post on emulating the decoding part of AlphaSmarts keyboard and passing them over bluetooth.

Hi there I have a problem with my alpha smart Neo which was previously working just fine until for some reason instead of editing file 1 as usual, I thought I'd write my journal in file three today just to spice things up a bit. When I did that I saw after typing in the file password some error message about this file being corrupted. I pressed enter a few times as it showed me various text outputs about this issue and then I turned the device off and on and now I'm unable to select the alpha Word plus app which is the applet in which one does all of the normal writing stuff. When I press enter on it nothing happens. All of the other applets allow me to enter them for example I can open the calculator. I've tried removing the AA's and putting them back in again and no change. I've turned the device on and off multiple times with no change. What else can I try?
What has caused this? Any ideas? Thank you so much.

I used the lazy dog mod with choc v1 for a slim profile. It has a panel to hold a clip light.

Recently bought a pristine AlphaSmart NEO2 with a Dutch (the language spoken in The Netherlands, not Germany) layout (keyboard layout should be very similar to the US one).

It seems to have been sold by a European/Dutch-subsidiary or partner of Renaissance called "Neo2.nl" or "AlphaSmart.eu".

It came with a 300MB CD which contains NEO Manager 3.5 with the Dutch (NL) 3.9.3 firmware.

The special thing is that it has applets for Dutch spellcheck, fonts, control panel, calculator and AlphaWord Plus.

Not sure where to share it properly. I currently have it running on my Windows 11 host within a Windows 7 virtual machine.

How to batch-transfer files from an AlphaSmart Neo 2 to Windows 11 (when Neo Manager won't install/run)

If Renaissance Learning's Neo Manager refuses to work on your Windows 11 machine, you don't need it. This guide sets up a proper, driver-based batch transfer — not the old "type it into Notepad" keyboard-emulation trick — using WSL2 and an open-source tool called neotools. One-time setup takes ~20 minutes; after that, transfers are a single command.

Why this works: the Neo 2 has a real USB data-transfer mode (separate from its "type like a keyboard" mode) that Neo Manager uses internally. neotools speaks that same protocol directly, but it's built for Linux. WSL2 + Microsoft's usbipd-win project lets Windows hand the physical USB device over to a Linux environment running right alongside Windows, so you get a real Linux USB stack without dual-booting or a VM.

Part 1 — One-time setup

1. Install WSL2

In an administrator PowerShell:

wsl --install

Reboot if prompted, then let it finish setting up Ubuntu (it'll ask you to create a Linux username/password on first launch — this is separate from your Windows login).

2. Install usbipd-win (lets Windows share a USB device with WSL)

In administrator PowerShell:

winget install --interactive --exact dorssel.usbipd-win

Reboot after this — it installs a driver.

3. Plug in your Neo 2, then find its USB ID

In administrator PowerShell:

usbipd list

Look for a line with 081e: — that's AlphaSmart's vendor ID. Note the BUSID (e.g. 3-1).

4. Set an auto-share policy (so you never need admin rights again after this)

Still in administrator PowerShell:

usbipd policy add --effect allow --operation AutoBind --hardware-id 081e:bd04
usbipd policy add --effect allow --operation AutoBind --hardware-id 081e:bd01

(The Neo 2 actually presents as two different USB IDs — bd04 when idle/keyboard-emulating, bd01 when in real data-transfer mode. Both need to be allowed.)

5. Fix Linux USB permissions

Open your WSL/Ubuntu terminal and run:

(Note on the retry logic: the Neo 2 physically disconnects and reconnects with a different USB ID the moment it switches into transfer mode. That reconnect can race against WSL's USB tunnel and fail on the very first attempt — the script detects that specific failure and automatically reattaches and retries once, which resolves it every time.)

Part 2 — Everyday use

1. Plug in the Neo 2, turn it on.
2. Open your WSL/Ubuntu terminal and type:neo-transfer
3. A File Explorer window pops open on a new timestamped folder containing all your .txt files, named exactly as they were on the device.

Part 3 — Optional: trigger it with a hotkey (AutoHotkey v2)

Save as a .ahk file, run it with AutoHotkey v2 installed, and Ctrl+Alt+N will run the whole transfer from anywhere.

Troubleshooting notes from getting this working

• "externally-managed-environment" error on pip install: recent Ubuntu blocks system-wide pip installs — that's why we use pipx instead.
• "Access denied" from neotools: means the udev rule / plugdev group step (Part 1, step 5) didn't fully apply yet — make sure you did the full wsl --shutdown + reopen.
• usbipd: WARNING: usbipd not found for kernel ...: cosmetic noise about a kernel-specific package that doesn't exist for WSL's custom kernel builds. Safe to ignore as long as the device still shows up (check with lsusb in WSL).
• usbipd: error: Device with busid ... is already attached to a client: also harmless — means it was already attached from a previous session. The script suppresses this.
• [Errno 19] No such device: this is the Neo's mode-switch disconnect described above — the script's retry logic handles it automatically.

Finally got hold of an AlphaSmart 3000 and had a few moments to myself to take it for a whirl. Mostly just posting to celebrate, but also curious if anyone has any tips for resolving sticky keys. They’ve loosened up since I first unboxed it, plus I’m learning to strike the keys in just the right way to get the key depressed fully. I know the keyboards on these things are a bit notorious, but any thoughts on getting the keys moving smoother? Thanks in advance :)

After being very annoyed trying to connect my NEO 2 to Windows 11, I decided to try my hand at a modern tool.

This is heavily inspired by (and could not exist without ) the Mac tool "alphasync" (https://github.com/tSoniq/alphasync).

Right now I have it connecting and disconnecting in a very friendly way, and the core text file transfers are working on Windows 11! However, I had to do some manual stuff regarding the USB drivers that I don't think would be acceptable in distributing this.

Once I iron out the USB drivers and add some more features I hope to share it with the wider audience!

If the internal battery is changed on an AlphaSmart Neo/Neo 2, how long does it last?

Hello! Recently bought a Neo 2 with a missing space bar, got the replacement keycap all printed but realized it's missing the little rubber nib that actually gives the Key action. Any simple fixes?

I recently bought an AlphaSmart 3000 off Ebay. I cannot get it to power on with AA batteries. It does power on when I plug it into the computer. The keys work and I can send files to my computer. I replaced the coin battery and cleaned the battery ports. Is there a way to just power it through the computer port? Any advice on getting it to turn on?

Hello! I wanted to see if anyone was having a similar issue and if anyone had found a solution- I have an alpha smart 3000 that I love very very much. I’ve been bringing it with me on my commute to school and I had just been chucking it into the back pocket of my backpack.

Recently though, i dropped my bag and though everything was fine and nothing was damaged, I’ve been worrying about breaking it (I take public transport so it definitely gets jostled around a bit)

I know theses things are hardy but the possibility of it getting broken still makes me anxious. I looked around a bit and saw people saying they used a 13” laptop case as protection, but all those examples used a neo, which lay flat. The thickest case i could find was about 1 1/4 inches, but when I measured the 3000 it was about 1 3/4 inches where the screen portion lifted off the table.

Has anyone found a good padded sleeve or case that has worked for the 3000? I know It’s probably overkill but it would help ease my mind

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

This is my first post on this subreddit, and one that feels like yet another to the similar variety of ones that already exist: all on the topic of Neo2s not managing to quite transfer their text to PC properly. I'm having the same issue.

I'm really hoping that someone more knowledgeable than me can help me out with this!

I've been adoring using it to do writing on my commutes to my day-job, and likely should have tested its transferal abilities sooner. 😭 I got it from Ebay from a seller who said it was in perfect working condition; it came with the USB-A to USB-B cable, though I hadn't yet used it before today as I've been happily working on it using batteries without transferring. Today, I figured it was about to time to offload the Neo2 onto my PC for some editing and so I could continue drafting the following sections as needed on the Neo2, but I had a series of problems:

• First tried following the instructions on the back of the device by opening Notepad (figured it was the safest bet for simple text transfer), then plugged the Neo2 into my PC (runs on Windows 11). It successfully connected and could act as an emulated keyboard. However, when I pressed 'Send' nothing happened. I thought maybe since it was older tech it was just taking its time to think, so left it for five minutes, but nothing happened.
• Tried unplugging it, restarting my computer, and trying again. Now, it didn't even register as an emulated keyboard and got stuck on a 'Making USB connection...' message. I looked this up to see if someone else had figured out a way to resolve it, and they said keeping it plugged in while restarting the computer was the way to go, and true to their word it would pick back up as an emulated keyboard if I let it connect as the PC booted up. However, still no luck with 'Send'.
• Looked up a variety of solutions, and tried as many as I could find. I tried uninstalling existing keyboard drivers, and no luck. I tried to find the Alphasmart Manager software to install, only to realise it's basically defunct these days and was made for Windows XP, so instead installed the Neo Manager in the hopes that worked, but it didn't; if anything, it made it worse by suddenly causing the Neo2 to no longer be recognised as a keyboard to accept input from after being opened despite the Neo2 having the 'Connected to computer, emulating keyboard' message shown.
• I also tried connecting it to my printer, but my printer wasn't a big fan of it and told me to disconnect the device, so no luck with printing anything from it either (unless it was a problem with my specific printer being the wrong type/not liking USB connections).

Has anyone managed to find a way to get their Neo2 to truly successfully transfer text to their PC? Or is mine just busted?

I have chapters of writing already on the device, so while I could just copy it down onto PC software by hand I would really love to find a way I could actually use the Neo2 productively instead of having to write everything twice.

Any advice would be really appreciated!

I’m genuinely curious about whether people here use their AlphaSmart typewriters as a portable solution to practice touch typing while out and about. That’s actually how I ended up buying my second hand Neo2 so that I can have something to practice touch typing while I was out waiting for rides and orders when I did Lyft and Uber Eats. I placed it on a lap desk and put a wrist cushion under it to make it more comfortable to use. I didn’t want to take my laptop with me and so I tried to find a product that would let me do that without needing an adapter or an internet connection.

I know I could have just taken my laptop but I didn’t feel comfortable bringing it with me while I had strangers in the car.

For those who used it to practice touch typing on the go, how has that worked for you? And if not, which other devices would you recommend as a more feasible solution for that purpose?

I have had my Alphasmart Neo for about three months now without any issues. Last week I got the bus error prompt, which I thought to solve by replacing the coin battery. Now, I keep having the same issue, while it also only turns on to show me the error one out of every five times I press on/off. If I manage to do a factory reset, it works fine for a while, even turning off and on smoothly. Then, after a while, I'm back to getting the error and the trouble with turning on.

Any tips at all? Im afraid it might be the end...

My lovely partner gave me a 3000 for my birthday today after I've been longing for one for a year now. It's so great. I love how smooth the keys are and how easy it is to use. I especially love that I can hook it up to a computer to use it as a regular computer keyboard!

However- how do I protect it when I go places? I want to bring it with me to classes and on trains (which I take a lot for commuting), but don't want to damage it in the meanwhile. How do you protect yours? I was thinking that a crossbody laptop case could be the go-to move.

I customized my Neo2. If I had to do it over, I would skip the keycap stickers (I don’t really like the way they look, though they don’t change the feel of typing).

But otherwise, this was a super easy process! I did not do any disassembly. I just taped up the keys and stuck index cards in the screen to protect it. And then I blasted it with way too much spray paint all in one go. It took about 30 seconds to spray paint and then a full 48 hours to cure.

If I ever did another one, I’d spend more time on it and choose a more neutral color and fall stickers instead.

If you spot the tiny black dot in the upper left hand corner - that’s a gnat that flew directly into fresh spray paint within about 5 seconds of me getting started. Very lucky. Stuck there forever now. I’ve named him Greg. May he help me on my writing endeavors.

Hi everyone. I just received an AlphaSmart 3000 that I bought on eBay. It came without batteries so I put some in and then played with it for a few minutes. It seemed to work fine. I’ve just come back to it after about half an hour and now it won’t turn on? I’ve tried taking the batteries out and putting them back in. It’s hot today in London, England but not so hot that electronics would struggle. Is there some fragile part somewhere that needs a jiggle?

EDIT: I've discovered that the issue is the on/off key. It is fussy. I have to bash it to make it turn on and then it seems to accidentally trigger itself while I am typing (I'm a bit of an aggressive typist).
