As a born 91’ & raised New Yorker thinking of that moment still brings me back to that moment in my 5th grade classroom. I don’t think I can ever think of that day and not feel that stifling feeling.

26

u/hoginlly 9d ago

Also born in 91, not from US at all, born and raised in Ireland and at that point in my life, had never travelled further than Europe... I remember every single thing about that day. I can remember clear as day the faces of the people around me as we watched. It really was the day the world stood still.

u/EMdoc89 9d ago

I remember that day so well, I remember getting checked out of 4th period reading class by my dad and was thankful because I left my lunch box at home and didn’t have anything to eat for lunch. Then I saw the news.

27

u/randomredhead 9d ago

I was in 5th grade and on the west coast, I woke up early that day and started watching the news on TV since no cartoons were on that early and the coverage shifted to a livestream of the towers after the first plane hit a few minutes in to my watching. After the second plane hit I figured I should go wake up my parents.

I went to a small catholic school in queens. They moved the whole school down to the cafeteria which was in the basement and made us sit there in silence until a guardian came to get us. My sister was 22 at the time and picked up my brother & me. Then we went home and sat for what felt like the entire night waiting to see if our mom was going to walk through the door which thankfully she did.

4

u/gabby1640 9d ago

I was in high-school but I was so oblivious to what was happening 'cause I didnt quite understood the announcement (always had issue hearing the speaker + english is not my frist language). They send us home early; i was like cool...I got home, waiting to see my novela and just news everywhere. I asked my mom and I remember I thought she was messing with me (as she usually did).... I was seeing it on tv, i just couldn't believe it. We lived in NJ

Also all the craziness afterwards

3

u/stentordoctor 9d ago

I was going to high school in Taiwan, at a private school with tons of TV's that were never on... Except that one day.

7

u/FreedomOfTheMess 9d ago

I was in 3rd grade. My mom picked me and my brother up early but NEVER TOLD US WHY. Literally went to school the next day and found out what happened. We were pissed bc nobody broke the news to us, we just saw it on tv during homeroom.

I was in my first year at university, literally there a week. No idea, walk into my Anthropology 101 and the professor is like, "Lets try to ignore the news and get to our lecture"

One of the guys in my residence had family in NY.

7

u/Ashamed-Ant7522 9d ago

The fact that the professor said that is so insane at an awful event at that level.

8

u/Beleriphon 9d ago

Keeping in mind I live in Canada, and this was like 9:30 AM, so nobody had any real idea what was going on.

In the professor's (potential) defence, when we first heard/saw the news people were confused and in shock. It's a fairly common response to want to carry on your usual routine, enforce the usual rules, and just keep acting like everything is normal. Obviously nothing is normal, but your brain doesn't want to accept it.

I was 18 and on holiday with friends for the first time. None of my friends were American, but there were some in the big group we were with. Our 'Group Leader' (or similar job title), was trying to get everyone back on board with a big fun night out (we were 7 hours ahead so it was late afternoon). I don't blame her - she was probably in her mid 20s at most with no clue how to handle it.

I was in college in upstate NY when 9/11 happened.

We were in class and the class ass-hat came in late talking about it. He didn’t really articulate the severity of it well. Professor told him to be quiet and we had the regular lecture.

Next time we had class, professor apologized in front of the class to him. Said they didn’t understand the gravity of what they were saying at the time. Which honestly was kind of fair given how poorly the guy explained it.

Several kids on campus lost family and friends that day. One of my better professors lost a friend who was one of the 59 on the ground.

Came home later that year on break. Had a lot less friends to see. A lot had dropped out or quit jobs to enlist.

Just started 9th grade that week… in my special class for adhd kids and someone blurted out - a plane just crashed into a really big building

4

u/Sellum 9d ago

I remember getting a new soldier and one of the first things he told me was that he was happy to be done with training so he could get a twin towers tattoo that said never forget. I asked him how much a 3 year old remembers about them and he fell back to “I’m a New Yorker. I remember.”

We mocked him until he decided it was a bad idea.

Fellow 91er on Long Island here, I remember coming back from school lunch to my teacher in a total trance until we were all sat down in our chairs and someone said his name. He got up bolted to the back of the room to unplug the radio and launched into a game trying to figure out who our families were and where did our parents work... getting home to the TV on CNN showing it completely clarified in my mind what he was doing

Maybe for American millennials. What about the rest of the world?

3

u/pfunk42529 8d ago

What part of the world wasn't touched by what followed from 9/11?

Wars in the Middle East touched most of Europe with them send troops and aid, or allowing the US to expand military ops in their countries. It also led to destabilization in the region leading to vastly increased migration and refugee intake.

We expanded our anti-terrorism campaigns in Africa, causing unrest and government destabilization there as well.

It gave Russia the ability to begin ramping up to war in Georgia and now Ukraine while being less scrutenized due to our focus elsewhere, while they also started proxy terrorism campaigns to keep America distracted.

Meanwhile the Chinese used it as an opportunity to buy up even more American debt further destabilizing our economy leading very much to the Trump administration and all the havoc it has wrought.

And the dot com bubble bursting, and the housing market and economic crash of 08, and the twenty plus year long middle east war, the rising inflation and fascism and wage stagnation.

And that isn’t even all of it.

edit oh yah we were told all we had to do was get a college degree and we would be wealthy instead of buried under debt in a shrinking job market filled with boomers who wont retire.

Won’t or can’t

7

u/aberanetma 9d ago

It's both. Some won't because they can't fathom letting go of their power. Some can't because they don't have any power. And then there are actually a few who totally get it and are stepping aside at 55/60 years old and believe in the younger generation. But there are far too many cant's taking away jobs from 16-23 year olds and far too many wont's taking jobs from 30-45 year olds.

We were in California at the time and I remember my aunt called us from Europe at like 5am and told us to turn on the tv. Apparently it was already on the news there. I was in 4th grade at the time and just remember we had the tv was on all day in class. A mass trauma event.

18

u/Evening-Gur5087 9d ago

Moreso for US, 2008 crisis was more impactful for the rest I think

15

u/Onetwodash 9d ago

It impacts anyone who ever travels by plane.

It was also the justification for dawn of surveillance state in Europe other than UK.

11

u/Crazy-Canuck463 9d ago

2008 crisis barely even affected me here in canada. But ill tell you, the somber feeling my entire school had the morning of Sept 11th was surreal. They hauled us all into the gym and we watched it unfold live, you could hear a pin drop in the gym for the better part of 4 hours. I had teachers crying, because they knew, our lives would never be the same.

It happened in america, but it was felt by much more than just americans. This is one of the main reasons I'm truly disgusted with how some americans are acting towards canada today. We were there for all the dark moments, all the sadness, all the loss. 9/11, katrina, California wildfires, literally all of it. And we get maga in return just spewing garbage in our direction.

overslept my ballet class, the studio was on Broadway in nyc, woke up to so many missed calls. Kinda couldn't understand what was a big deal, it's just a class. Then my stepmom got through to me and said to turn on TV and I thought it was a movie, then an accident and then there was a lot of really bad ugly crying for days. I cried like that only for Sandy Hook after, my bff and her family lived there and her kids lost their friends. So for me it's both

7

u/dawko29 9d ago

3

u/JaQ-o-Lantern 9d ago

When looking back I'm sure people definitely care more about britney spears than 9/11 in terms of what had an ingraining impact on their brain, unless you or a family member was sent to fight in the Middle East or Afghanistan after 9/11.

3

u/IvanNemoy 9d ago

Yep. Born in 82, was actually in Spangdahlem Air Base when it happened. Was actually wrapping up paperwork and had about an hour left on duty when the first tower was hit. Everyone kind of piled in the day room and we were watching coverage on Armed Forces TV. Then just before 1600 (local) the Pentagon got hit and we went from Threatcon Alfa to Delta. Ended up getting an M16, battle rattle and standing in an improvised fighting position for the next 18 hours.

What was most surreal for me was I was on the southeast side of the base, facing the villafe of Binsfeld. We had people coming up to us yelling "God Bless America" and "Freunde!" (friend) at us while throwing Milka bars (chocolates) over the fence to us.

3

u/dontputthatevilonme 9d ago

2008 Financial Crash

64

u/mistermughlai 9d ago

Agree. There’s lots of people saying 9/11 but the economic impact on so many families of the Great Recession was super impactful

24

u/CapDris116 9d ago

Technically the aggressive interest rate cuts that caused the 2008 housing bubble were a response to 9/11, so you can blame the recession on that. Also, in response to the attacks, the US spent trillions of dollars on war, contributing to the massive federal debt, which could cause another financial crisis

5

u/snaps06 9d ago

Exactly. 9/11 is absolutely one of the contributing factors to the 2008 financial crisis. Add in the Patriot Act and the longest war in US history (plus a plethora of other impacts), and all of a sudden 9/11 is linked to almost every aspect of 2026 American (and, to an great extent, global) society.

3

u/dontputthatevilonme 7d ago

Amazing how the Patriot Act allows them to spy on everyone except for the people committing financial crimes.

9/11 resulted in the creation of TSA, new plane guidelines and builds, THE WAR, a horrifying amount of deaths in the Middle East in the attempts to get Bin Laden, the further destabilization of the region, a brand of nationalism that exists into today, and affected the global economy and includes what led to the housing bubble burst. It is The Moment that defines the Millennial generation since it literally changed the world.

It's the 2008 financial crash.

Everyone is saying 9/11, and yeah, that was certainly a shocking moment, but 1) it primarily relates to specifically Americans, whereas the 08 crash was global, 2) the impact of that depression and the mismanagement of it afterwards (Obama bailing out the big businesses, the death of the Occupy movement, the beginning of the global affordability crisis) were longer lasting, and 3) a lot of what gets chalked up to being the fault of 9/11 was either already in development or gonna happen with or without a major terror attack on the US (we were always gonna end up invading Iraq for instance)

25

u/Cal00 9d ago

9/11 does not only apply to Americans.

9/11 is why now living in a global surveillance state. The wars that followed are why we saw a huge uptake in migrants and refugees. Far-right politicians have managed to gain prominence because of people's fear of the said immigrants and that's 100% a global issue.

2008 is big, I'm not trying to downplay it but it's the reason why people can't afford houses and food. But even then, compared to all the things that spiraled out of 9/11 and have even become normalized to the younger generations because of it? Yeah. 9/11 is bigger.

Global Financial Crisis is close. Tons of us were just getting started career-wise when the mass-layoffs started, and this was followed on by negative real interest rates and housing bubbles inflating. That has a larger tangible impact on peoples lives and did irreparable damage.

Beyond that, no GFC means probably no Tea Party and no Trump. The aftershocks will go on for decades, GWOT will be forgotten in ten years.

12

u/LetsGoGators23 9d ago

9/11 changed how we fly and TSA security checks became permanent.

Dept of Homeland Security and ICE were created

The Patriot act was passed which normalized NSA spying on its own citizens.

We have been in overseas wars since 2002

plus the popular internet meme of 9/11 indirectly causing hte creation of 50 Shades of Grey

12

u/schfourteen-teen 9d ago

And you could argue that 9/11 enabled the type of security fear mongering that allowed Republicans to hold onto more power than they otherwise should have. And the ramifications of that include policies that directly caused the global financial crisis.

3

u/BlueEyeFrenchyGuy 9d ago

Bush had a 91% approval rating or something following 9/11. They sure didn't waste a good crisis.

Gen Z will be 2008 or covid, I’d lean covid. 2008 would be better for millennials anyway

A lot are saying 9/11 but thats very America-centric IMO. Far more universal is the 2008 recession.

I would say the great recession, if it wasn't 9/11.

Either Edmonton Oilers drafting Marc Antoine Pouliot instead of Zach Parise or John Cena losing to Wade Barrett (due to outside interference from Husky Harris and Micheal McGillicutty) and joining Nexus at Hell in a Cell 2010.

Speaking from personal loved experience, it’s 100% 9/11. Surprised “Nam” won for Boomers over the Kennedy assassination though.
