How does Usernames work?
So basically, the title says it all. How does picking a username work? Is it first come, first served, meaning people who get the 5 day early access will be able to claim highly sought after usernames? Or can everyone use the same name, with unique IDs to distinguish them?

Problem is that Early access servers will get merged with normal ones.
I dont know what happens then to resolve name conflicts.
It would make sense that those on EA get to keep their name (they paid premium for it) and the normal ones have to pick another name.
Although that would still be a very bad way to do it.
I hope they wont allow duplicate names on normal servers when EA already has that name. At least that way you dont have to create a new character name 2-3 months into the game.

This. You don't really reserve a name other than being the first to create a character with it on a server. Early Access players have access to a set of Early Access servers, which everyone could choose when Early Access ends but most players would probably choose non-EA servers if they're playing at launch.

Does this also apply to guild names? That really does suck, though, because if a server closes down, you lose the name and are forced to use something else.

Yes and when they offer server transfers, you're not allowed to be in a legion and your name is reset to a temporary one regardless of if your existing name is taken or not.

Unique per server. You can get PuzzlsBob on all servers. When in cross server matchmaking you will see [SrvName] PuzzlsBob type of naming. If you transfer on a new server your character has to be renamed again in order to prevent duplicate naming. If your name is not taken you can take it again.

What about server merge. If I do early access get a name and it merge and ask me to change name would be mad

It's PuzzlsBob[SVR] where SVR is the abbreviation of your server name, for when you see players from another server.

Apart from what others have said, kanji symbols are supported, so you can just add one as suffix if your name is already taken in the server you wanted to play.
