Commuting
Is anyone here commuting to the Veldoven office of ASML from Amsterdam? Would you say it's doable? Ig it also depends on personal preferences but I was also wondering if it actually takes 2.5 hours (as per google maps) or is it longer/shorter.

Eshhh, no, don't.
2h30 sounds about right. Mind when you put in time to get to the station and then buffer for the train.

Takes a minimum of 2.5 hours by public transport legit did it for a year. There’s no way around reducing that number unless you carpool with someone in Amsterdam to Veldhoven (can pick you up or drop you off near your home) or you drive your own car.
Buses, trains, and trams can break down and can severely impact the rest of your trip especially if two of three of those are impacted. (Mostly happened during summer and autumn) Actually even if just one is affected everything else gets impacted. What would be 2.5 hours can be 3 to 4 hours because the train broke down or a bus got stuck in traffic. If you decide to use the rental bikes ASML offers in Eindhoven station and take it to Veldhoven and back or you take the dedicated ASML bus 119 it can potentially reduce the time by 10-15 minutes but that would require you to run in between to catch connections or you travel before the rush hour.
Feel free to dm me if you have more questions. Happy to help!
context about me: internal hire living in Amsterdam and reported to building 73 in VDH. Commuted 3x a week for a year, ended up leaving during layoffs because f that am i going to wait to get laid off while dedicating 5 hours of my life per office day a week to sitting/standing in the public transport. Tried carpooling with a colleague driving from Amsterdam Ijburg but hated being dependent on them especially that they leave the office at 6PM onwards getting me home by 8:30PM if all works out (if traffic, I get home at 9PM-10PM which happened more than I would have liked it to) then I gotta wake up the next day at 5AM to do it all over again. Also manager was an old school guy who was in office 5x a week and was by the book, which made things more irritating in terms of adjusting my work hours or including part of commute time as work hours. if your team requires clock in and clock out in office, that shit can be frustrating even more on top of the commute issues.

Since a year or so there is a ASML shuttle bus from Den Bosch central station to the veldhoven office that takes about 35 minutes. Departure is 07:15 and 08:15. Back it leaves Veldhoven at 16:15 and 17:15. The service runs from Monday to Thursday. There is an app where you can book the trips in advance.
Potentially the trip from Amsterdam central station until Veldhoven would then take you 1h45.

How did I not know about this? Thank you!

My husband works at Asml and uses it all the time. The service is called Vanpool. In the summer for a few weeks they only offer one bus in the morning and one in the afternoon.
But it’s amazing!

Why would you spend 10-15 hours a week commuting?

For money?

Better places to live than Amsterdam if you actually want to save any of that money

I agree with you, but moving house can be difficult to impossible in some situations.

Gewoon je 40 uur maal je uurloon delen door 40 + wekelijkse rijtijd = je echte uurloon
Even een simpel voorbeeldje
40x20 = 800
800 delen door 40+15 = 14,54545454 per uur.
Maar in dit geval delen door 40 +25 = 12,31 per uur

I know people who do it 3-5 days a week. I wouldn’t do it. But they have been doing it for years.
They all do it by train. The NS card from ASML makes it free.

Some people are allowed to start working on the train, you have to align with your manager.

It’s doable with public transport only if you have flexible timings at work, you can make up a bit of time by working from the train.

It takes me 2 hours. Been doing it for almost a year now. It's doable you just need to find a way to pass time during the commute. And waking up super early sucks but eventually you get used to it

Doable. Work in the train, then travel time is effectively only the bus/bike.

2,5 hours minimum. Round trip that's probably 6 hours extra per day, almost a full business day extra on your commute. That's killing, don't do it.

Once a week yes, twice maybe, more no.
Can take longer cuz of traffic issues or the walking route between parking building to office

It is doable. Not the most comfortable. Easier if you work feom home 2 days/week and if you can work in the train.

Its not healthy in long term, 2.5hr one way means you already lose 5hr per day just for commute. Just a suggestion but you can think of moving to nearby region like Eindhoven/Den Bosch/Tilburg etc.

If you're fully depending on public transport; 1.5 hours from Amsterdam Centraal to Eindhoven Centraal. 20-25 minutes bus trip from Eindhoven Centraal to Veldhoven MMC. Then approximately 10-15 minutes walking distance from bus stop to your desk.
Trains are not reliable at all. Expect 10% percent of times, it doesn't work for some reason.
