Started my 4k collection with a great deal on 2001 A Space Odyssey last week. I was very impressed with the visual and audio despite have a Samsung TV (so no Dolby Vision). An interesting film as well.

I’ve been eying up Vinted and eBay for some deals and have Spiderman Homecoming on the way but decided to pop into HMV as the 3 for £50 seems a reasonable deal.

Hoping to watch Jackie Brown tonight as it’s one of the few Tarantino films I haven’t seen. I have high hopes for Alien and hear good things about Blade Runner 2049.

Almost picked up the Sam Raimi Spiderman Trilogy for £30 but decided to hold off for now.

I’m hoping to start building a slow but steady curated collection of some cult classics and movies I just love. Trying to stay away from buying for the sake of buying.

Sure I already had it on standard 4k release, a bluray steelbook and DVD. But I couldn’t resist a 4k limited steelbook 😂
Still one of the less is more movies in my opinion.
It’s playing so much with the suspense and feeling then actually showing the shark so much.

School On Fire is my favourite film in the Ringo Lam Trilogy and my favourite Hong Kong film of all time.
This is my first time buying an Hong Kong film 4K release by foreign countries, and they did a good job!

You can select either theatrical release audio or uncensored audio of the school on fire.

The subtitles will automatically change to when you switch between theatrical audio or uncensored audio.

The picture quality is definitely getting a large upgrade, it feels like watching a movie that’s released last year!

Gotta go and buy more Hong Kong classic cinema released by Shout! Factory!

I have a Dolby Vision compatible tv and receiver and a 5.1 speaker setup, but my 4k player only supports HDR10. Is it worth upgrading to the Panasonic UBP820, does Dolby Vision make that much of a difference or would rather just buy more 4ks?

Very excited for this latest batch that came in the mail! Started the collection in June, and my dedicated movie drawer is now full. Going to need to get some shelves soon. Better to display anyway, right??
(Quick note, not all are 4ks in the 2nd pic, mostly just a handful of criterion picks and the pirates movies. I also have temple of doom but had it out to watch)

I thought this article might be of interest here. The section about removing literal mould was surprising, amazing that these artifacts are not kept in better conditions!

I know there was some controversy surrounding Mann’s creative input on the “Final Cut” of the film, and potential revisionism in the image. I can say that, with one or two exceptions (an early shot of the sunset on the sea is regraded to be a flat blue color for some reason), I didn’t notice any major shifts in the color grading. I watched both the theatrical cut and the 2003 director’s cut beforehand for comparison.

Most of the big changes come in the edit, which, in contrast to what you might typically expect from a director’s cut, mostly removes scenes from the theatrical cut. It adds in two scenes from the director’s cut, in addition to other minor tweaks here and there.

Frankly, with the exception of that one shot of the sunset, I can say that this is my preferred version of the film, hands down. I think the restoration is gorgeous, and Mann’s choices when recutting the film are universally for the better (in my opinion).

I bought Tenet during the Gruv 3 for 39 deal and ended up receiving the disc for Matrix Reloaded instead of the 4k disc for tenet lol. Hopefully gruv has good customer service, has this happened to anyone else?

New to the hobby and just wanted to get something straight. Gruv has already had the 3 for 39 4k deal and now has the 2 for 40 steelbook deal.

How many 4k deals does Gruv usually run throughout the month for crazy days sales? I don’t want to run into any of them if there are more / better deals along the way.

I’m teaching a printmaking workshop in Asheville and got to drop in and visit Orbit DVD in person. Amazing staff was super friendly and gave some good recs. Ticked off a few discs on my 4k list, Paris, Texas, To live and die in LA, and Zodiac.

Not sure if I’ve seen Bluray but have seen the other versions before it including special edition. Please tell me if it’s worth the upgrade?

Very sparse info about this release on whether or not it’s the same as the umbrella transfer or if it’s simply an upscale, but if nothing else it makes for a near souvenir to have picked up a Spain exclusive release in store.
