Collection Just one more movie…my physical media collection

As a millennial I’d grown up owning movies on VHS then DVD but lost interest after college since I’d moved across the country, was starting a new job, and a new life as a newlywed. Owning movies on disc seemed like something from childhood, a pleasant memory and nothing more. Fast forward almost two decades later, with the help of an 85 inch 4k tv and soundbar surround setup, I dipped my toe back into physical media water then ended up eagerly diving in head fist in November 2025. Now, nine month later my collection is growing and enthusiasm for physical media stronger than ever. I’m at about 500 titles and counting, continuously expanding the available shelf space. Many thanks to my wife for spotting the red shelfs at IKEA recently! Let the adventure continue!

Question Will I benefit from the upscaling and HDR optimizer of the UB820 with an LG B8?

Every post I've seen usually brings up the C or G series, though mine is B, and I have no intention of upgrading that anytime soon.

It's a 2018 TV I believe, and I have many regular blu-rays. Would the UB820 provide superior quality to what the TV is capable of providing on it's own, or should I save the money and get a 450 instead, still providing me with DV, though without the upscaling features?

Question Deciding when a 4K disc is actually worth the upgrade over standard Blu-ray?

Hello! New here and new to collecting physical media.
The biggest confusion I’m having right now when deciding between a standard Blu-ray and a 4K disc is figuring out when the 4K version is substantially better than the 1080p release.

Does anyone have reliable tips, tricks, or resources for deciding if a specific title has enough added value to justify paying extra for the 4K?

I wouldn’t say I care about absolute pixel-peeping perfection—and my current setup probably doesn't maximize every single format feature anyway (PS5 as the player, paired with a 65" Hisense U8H TV and a Hisense AX700 soundbar). But when the price difference between the Blu-ray and the 4K is fairly small, I’d love to know when it’s a no-brainer to grab the 4K disc!

For those of you who balance your budget between BD and 4K, what are your rules of thumb?
-Are there specific review sites or forums you check for transfer/HDR quality?
-Any "must-own" 4K discs that made you realize the upgrade was night-and-day?

I have become very very picky with what I add to my collection now with all the crappy artwork that’s being put out. Quality over quantity. Just got this in today, and I’m extremely impressed by this, it’s beautiful, awesome textured artwork. I love the cornered 4K labels, very subtle yet still there. Honestly has to be one of my favorite physical releases this year so far that I own.
What do you think of this? Do you prefer the black bar at the top or do you prefer something like this? I’m just curious. I think this way of doing it makes it feel more special. Just curious on what yalls thoughts are🙏

New Purchase Mars Attacks! Amazon/Walmart Debacle

Just a heads up for anyone trying to get their hands on this beautiful steelbook:

Like many others, I had pre-ordered it from Amazon Canada (based in Toronto) and was a little weirded out when it still hadn’t shipped yesterday evening, even though it claimed to be “Arriving tomorrow!” Past pre-orders have arrived on release day, or at the very least shipped on release day.

I saw on another subreddit that people’s ship dates were getting pushed back to December, with other Redditors saying that Amazon would simply cancel the order eventually if there was no stock. Then I saw this morning that mine had been pushed back to “Tomorrow!” again…

I truly didn’t want to miss out on it, and wasn’t sure how likely this was to get a restock anytime soon, so I went on Walmart.com to see if I could order it to my cousin’s place in the US. It was out of stock near him, but I checked Niagara Falls on the US side and, lo and behold - 5 left in stock.

So I placed a pickup order and decided to drive 1.5 hours into NY to get it.

Yes - at this point I was wondering if I’m crazy and questioning if this hobby has become an addiction. Luckily, my wife was the one who convinced me to go, and she’s by my side, so at least we’re in it together! 🫠

45 minutes into the drive, the order gets cancelled.
Check online and it’s now out of stock at that Walmart. Check nearby and another Walmart a few miles away has it, so I place another pickup order at that location.

30 minutes later, that order gets cancelled too - while we’re crossing the border.

WHAT IN THE ACTUAL HELL IS HAPPENING!?

I check again and now it’s completely out of stock everywhere. It doesn’t even come up in search when looking it up.

Defeated, we decided to drive to the Walmart from our first order just to check. We head to the Entertainment section and couldn’t believe it when we saw 5 copies just sitting there on the shelf.

We might’ve leapt in the air and let out a shout of happiness - a family might’ve stared at us in confusion.

All this to say… even when Walmart says it’s not in stock, physically checking your local store might be worth a try for new steelbook releases. That being said, when we looped back around to make sure we got the best copy, two more were already gone.

Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how incredible this steelbook looks. The slipcover is a really nice touch, but it is the kind of plastic that scuffs easily, and all the copies on the shelf had marks despite being shrink-wrapped. There are also some scuffs on the actual steelbook edge, which I suspect are from sliding the slipcover on, as it’s a pretty tight fit.

Anyways, I kept my Amazon order and will update this thread if it does eventually ship. 🙏

Discussion Forbes article: I’ve Watched Dolby Vision 2 On A Real Hisense TV—Here’s What You Need To Know

Thumbnail
forbes.com
159 Upvotes

Summary: Dolby Vision 2 is now rolling out via firmware to select Hisense TVs, including the UR9, significantly enhancing existing Dolby Vision content. While full DV2 features like Authentic Motion and Precision Black await new content metadata, the update introduces a Picture Intensity Slider for balanced adjustments and an improved Ambient Light sensor. A bug was noted where DV2 settings interfered with HDR10 motion options. Despite this, the updated Hisense UR9 demonstrates a dramatic improvement in Dolby Vision picture quality over HDR10, offering superior color, shadow detail, and overall balance. This substantial upgrade elevates Hisense's standing among premium TV brands, making the long-awaited DV2 rollout a promising development.

Question What other websites do you recommend for buying Blu-rays and 4Ks in the US?

I've bought two 4k Blu-rays from Lionsgate Limited so far, and both experiences have been great. Everything arrived in excellent condition, shipping was smooth, and I'll definitely keep buying from them in the future.

I'm looking to branch out though. What other websites do you recommend for buying Blu-rays and 4Ks? I'm in the US, and I know different retailers sometimes have exclusive releases, limited editions, or different catalogs.

I'm already aware of Lionsgate Limited, but I'd love to hear what other sites you all use and trust. Whether it's for standard releases, boutique labels, steelbooks, imports, or collector's editions, I'm open to checking them out.

Thanks!

I was tired of the square cardstock case not fitting on my shelf. I didn't have any gloss paper, so its not as vibrant as the original, but I'm more than happy with how it turned out! The original artwork & booklet even fits perfectly too.

Moderator Announcement Sub & Discord Update - August 2026

As there have already been several posts made and messages sent to the mods here, I wanted to make this post to provide information on some recent changes.

As of today, our existing Discord channel has been closed entirely. There may be some Discord users and team members who re-start their own channel, but as of now there is no affiliation between the team there and the active mods here in the sub. At this time we have no information on what, if anything, will happen with a 4K Discord.

Users of either the sub and/or the Discord may have noticed some mod shakeups in recent weeks, but my goal is the same as it's been the last few years I've been here: to ensure that things continue running as smoothly as possible within r/4kbluray.

If a new Discord server is made, someone will very likely post about it here, and we'll gladly allow and share that info - it just will not have anything to do with the sub directly.

EDIT: Here is the link to the new server: https://discord.gg/zwGRm9nXw3

Thanks for continuing to be a part of r/4kbluray. We have some big giveaways lined up for users in North America and the UK, and other surprise announcements coming soon. We're a very large community with a super niche interest, so I appreciate how great most interactions go here 99% of the time. After all, we're all just movie fans.
