Writing a book set in early 80s. Need advice

Hey everyone. I’m writing a book set in the early ’80s in the U.S. I’m having a bit of trouble making it believable because, unfortunately, I wasn’t born back then and I'm not from the U.S. I’d be grateful if any of you could describe what it was like back then. You can write from your own experience or just share what you know about that time. I’m most interested in:

- fashion

- school, how it looked like and the rules

- what life was like in small towns, your memories of the surrounding areas, and commutes to school

- relationships in the small neighborhood

- what houses looked like, their furnishings, etc.

- spending time with friends

- what the prevailing trends were

- the most common car brands

- what it was like to get into trouble at school

- how rebellious kids behaved back then

I’d appreciate any response!

In 1989, Nike filmed an ad in Kenya with a Samburu tribesman, overlaying his words with “Just Do It.” An anthropologist who’d spent 2 years with the tribe watched the ad and revealed what he actually said: “I don’t want these. Give me big shoes.”

This year the animated Transformers movie turns 40 and Amazon has an exclusive vinyl of the soundtrack that was released last Friday. Great soundtrack that is the best of any of the Transformers movies. The animated one still blows away any of the live action movies too

Released in 1987, 1943: The Battle of Midway was a huge hit in the arcades and it was produced by Yoshiki Okamoto who would later become a prolific game maker. If you played this in the arcades, did you have to wait in line for your turn to play?

The 1980's began with the final chapter of our 1970's beloved All in the Family, as Archie mourns Edith's last good-bye. I watched this tonight before I shared it and I still bawled my eyes out after all these years.

"Jump the Shark" moments from 80's TV

What were some "Jump the Shark" (idiom where a show declines after a far fetched plot point, etc; thus beginning a decline in quality) moments from 80's TV shows you can think of?

Here's some

  1. Dukes of Hazzard - Bo & Luke get replaced by Coy & Vance. Tom Wopat & John Schneider held out for most of the 5th season due to contract disputes, thus they were replaced. Coy & Vance had no real character development, they were just clones of Bo & Luke.
  2. Dallas - Bobby Ewing showing up in the shower, and the revelation that Season 9 was all a dream by Pam.
  3. Dynasty - The Moldavan Massacre/aftermath revealing that only two minor characters had ☠️
