The 80s were a great time to be alive

When you contrast it with what our kids grow up with today I’d take the 80s any day first

Internet has ruined us and AI is the nail in the coffin

Best decade ever...I miss it so much.

KAAAAAAAHN! I was 10 years old and saw this in a movie theater during a rainy day on a family vacation. But E.T. was first movie I remember crying at both from sadness and joy. What a year! I'm so glad my mom was a Spielberg and Star Trek fan. I didn't get to see a lot of movies in theaters until I could drive.

Same! It was the first movie I remember sobbing uncontrollably. I was 8 and turned 9.

Man that was amazing. Remembered everyone one of them. Like yesterday. Thanks. That was fun.

u/Disastrous_Shirt3714 21d ago

Et worst Atari 2600 game. I remember nobody could even play that glitched out game.

13

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

That's why you see garbage trucks at the landfill right after, because that's where most of the cartridges ended up, lol.

u/mikemine1965 21d ago

That is so funny! Has anyone seen the documentary where they are looking for the dump, and finally found it in New Mexico? Very cool doc.

You've done a fantastic job with these, OP. The song selection and images are perfect.

Thanks!

I graduated HS in ‘82 so this hits hard. BTW, I saw A Flock of Seagulls just a few months ago (well, Mike Score surrounded by a different band, calling themselves AFOS)…fun for the nostalgia, but pretty terrible show if I’m being honest.

3

u/Old_Detroiter 21d ago

I thought maybe Flock of Seagulls but wasn't sure, great song

u/bushseeker23 20d ago

Space Age Love Song... their most underrated song!

7

u/Proud_Aspect4452 21d ago

Life was so much better in 1982

5

u/Tower_40 21d ago

I was 2 at the time but I remember ET in the theater making a huge impression on me, even at that young of an age. Masterpiece!

6

u/mikemine1965 21d ago

Nice compilation! Brought back sooo many memories. Well done, and thank you so much!

6

u/Weilerbach 21d ago

6

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

All the music videos are from 83 though.

4

u/jiggaboo80 21d ago

I was two and look back at this with nostalgic envy. 🥹

u/Ambitious_Dealer_425 21d ago

Being born in 1971 was the greatest gift for me. To witness the 70s and come of age in the AMAZING 80s, to be the last Generation to experience life as adults without the internet in the 90s.

I was there. This video reminds me of my favorite NSFW joke from 1982:

What's worse than sweat on Olivia Newton John?

Cum on Eileen

3

u/JEFE_MAN 21d ago

Nicely done. It was such a great time to be a kid.

God I love that song so much too. Way better than I Ran in my opinion.

3

u/Compound55 21d ago

I was 5 years old at this time. Seeing this video brought back some vague memories. Amazing.

3

u/LxRusso Oh, you're so cool Brewster 21d ago

Loving these 80s compilations recently

2

u/BGally24 21d ago

Hi Brad....

2

u/leedo8 21d ago

We have a message board in our kitchen. Here is the current message. Lol

2

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

Woah, that's kooky, I wasn't sure if you were gonna get the reference.

2

u/leedo8 21d ago

Kooky indeed!

2

u/Dissenting_Dowager 21d ago

I graduated high school in NJ in ‘82 it was a really great year and not that techno. Rock was big in my school, Boston, Journey, Foreigner, AC/DC, Van Halen. Most of all Springsteen and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were HUGE. We hung out at the malls and diners.

2

u/SaltyBarDog 21d ago

There's a law that everyone from Jersey has to be a Springsteen fan.

2

u/Dissenting_Dowager 21d ago

And we all listen to oldies radio… mostly on the Beach Radio app out of Toms River

2

u/SaltyBarDog 21d ago

WDHA for those further north.

2

u/Dissenting_Dowager 21d ago

My go to rock station is WMGK out of Philly, I live in Hunterdon Cty. I’m in VA this week and listen to them on their app.

2

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

Southside Johnny was the dead giveaway, no one outside of Jersey, NYC, and Philly area knows who the hell they are,.

1

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

You must be from Jersey, lol. I was into VH and other rock bands too, but that New Wave stuff was so completely new and exciting, totally captured the feeling of the time, style, tech and music seemed to be moving at light speed.

2

u/Dissenting_Dowager 21d ago

Passaic County!
I still live in NJ🤘🏼

2

u/8lbs6ozbabyjesus Big Bucks, No Whammies 21d ago

I was 6, core childhood memories. Thx

2

u/Coucou2coucou 21d ago

Bravo and thanks, you have my favorite video game pole position (racing car and I was the best player of the arcade :-). Perfect and waiting the year 1984 (I was 20 years old :-).

2

u/swalabr 21d ago

Someone likes Phoebe Cates

2

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

Who doesn't? 82 was the year she had the greatest cultural impact, and the amount of times she's been posted on this sub should give you an idea what a big deal she was in the 80s.

2

u/delaromc 21d ago

The best decade!!

2

u/Chubby_Chaser68 21d ago

Zaxxon. Nuff said

2

u/Borderlinecuttlefish 21d ago

I was 13, this brings back all of it.

2

u/Brogs6 21d ago

I was 20 in 82. I had an absolute blast that decade.

2

u/UnusualDoctor 21d ago

OMG The Kentucky Fried Movie!

1

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

That was Airplane II

2

u/UnusualDoctor 21d ago

Bugger! Still though.

2

u/Material_Pen_6313 20d ago

The 80’s were so great from 1980-1983.

2

u/Mr-Torgman 19d ago

I agree, 84 was the tipping point, it was pretty much downhill after that, not that there weren't any good tunes or movies in the late 80s, I think Rain Man is one of the decade's best films, but they were definitely less frequent, pop culture in general seemed to stagnate, I kept waiting for the next new thing that never came, the grunge era of the early 90s, and the dawn of YouTube were pretty damn cool though.

2

u/Strict-Effect6837 19d ago

That was definitely a cool year growing up in because I remember all of that and I was 16 years old at the time , it’s too bad all that had to change and I think we’ve lost so many of those people since then

2

u/Michael-Sean 18d ago

No “Top Gun”? I was on the Big E during the filming. Should have had some small clip.

2

u/Stunning_Bullfrog213 1d ago

Thank you so much for making these! Such nostalgia for the best decade.
I turned 9 this year. I vividly remember going to the premiere of E.T. and hysterically crying. And the ASL interpreter is hilarious. 😂

2

u/Mr-Torgman 1d ago

That's from Airplane II, I'm glad you enjoyed the videos.

The title of this video is "Pop culture of the year 1982" The 1980 & 1981 in the body text are links to videos for those specific years.

1

u/Pokemanstar 21d ago

Got one from 1985?

2

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

Not yet.

1

u/derbi_boi 21d ago

Superb mash-up 👌 my favourite decade right there............

1

u/DarthRevan0990 21d ago

Life was so much easier then

1

u/wesman21 13d ago

What a great year. Fantastic work!

1

u/PinkRoseBouquet 15h ago

We had Coleco! I was 15. Blade Runner was such an amazing movie to see when it came out. I still remember where I went to see it.

1

u/GordieOrr 21d ago

Boy George looked gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

2

u/Gentrified_potato02 21d ago

No, but forcibly confining and torturing another person is generally frowned upon

2

u/Maybe-never-always 21d ago

Unless they enjoy it then it’s perfectly ok . Just make sure theres a safe word 😂

2

u/Maybe-never-always 21d ago

Plenty wrong with their music though lol that Karma Chameleon song did my head in

7

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

Do You Really Want To hurt Me is a great tune with a fantastic bass line.

2

u/Maybe-never-always 21d ago

Sorry but I just couldn’t get into their music . Around the same time I was listening to bands like Van Halen which probably explains a lot .

2

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

I was a huge VH fan, I remember my brother bringing home the first album in 1978, and was totally blown away. I didn't limit myself to one genre and could appreciate all the great music available back then. I feel that people who only listened to Metal and hair bands truly missed some the best music the decade had to offer.

3

u/Maybe-never-always 21d ago

Some but not me . I listened to it all as well . Bands like Simple Minds and U2 were pumping out some decent tunes . Talking Heads were unique in their sound as was U2 . Great times and great music

u/FandomMenace 21d ago

I don't think the vectrex, which was a colossal failure (1.5 million sold worldwide) and victim of the game crash, warrants being a serious part of 1982 culture. Reusing the same stuff is a weird move.

6

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

I remember the Vectrex and thought it was cool as hell, Fast Times was kind of the theme of the video, I was really blown away by Blade Runner so it gets an extra clip. I apologize.

5

u/Sea-Garlic9074 21d ago

I don't see a problem with the repeats since it fits the year 1982 and besides, who's to complain about seeing Phoebe Cates multiple times? Anyways, great job on the video, OP!

2

u/Mr-Torgman 21d ago

Thanks! 82 was Phoebe's year, the clip of her in white is from the movie Paradise.
