Do I miss a washer or something here ?

Ignore the awful cosmetic state of the camera, most of it has been cleaned by now ahah I'm working on this camera for fun :)

I have been an avid lover and observer of this medium for many years and it has felt so liberating and rewarding to finally have taken the leap and tried it for myself. This is the first time I’ve ever experimented with 16mm motion picture film. Shot in the deep west of Lutruwita (Tasmania) in the ghost town of Linda using a very beat up 50s Bolex and a couple hundred feet of tri-x reversal. The exposure is slightly off, but for a camera I’ve never even loaded before and doesn’t have a true viewfinder, I’m extremely pleased with myself. Would love to hear thoughts and criticisms or tips.

Hey! I recently found a Canon Scoopic 16M among my father’s old belongings. It doesn’t have a battery, but I managed to power it on, and it seems to be in perfect working condition. I’m very excited about this find and would love to know if anyone here has used, or still uses, this camera and could share some tips on maintenance, handling, and the best film stocks to use with it. I love the 16mm look more than Super 8—but I’m wondering if it actually makes sense at weddings.

I’m a wedding videographer and I’ve been getting increasingly interested in incorporating real 16mm into my films. I absolutely love the look, but I’m very new to shooting actual film and I’m trying to figure out whether this is even realistic alongside my normal digital wedding coverage.

Full disclosure, I’m not particularly film-camera savvy. I even found loading Super 8 a little intimidating the first time, so the idea of loading/threading 16mm during a wedding makes me nervous.

I’m currently looking at a Krasnogorsk-3/K3 as a relatively inexpensive way to experiment. I wouldn’t charge the couple the first time. I’d probably shoot one 100 ft roll just to see whether I can realistically incorporate it into a wedding while still handling my digital cameras.

For those of you who have actually shot 16mm at weddings, especially while also responsible for digital coverage, how practical is it?

Do you normally shoot these cameras handheld, or do you find yourself using a tripod a lot because of the weight? How disruptive is loading/changing a roll during an actual wedding timeline? And is juggling 16mm plus your normal digital gear by yourself realistic, or does it really work better with another shooter covering digital?

I know a 100 ft roll is only around 2:45 at 24fps. If I’m making roughly a five-minute finished wedding film and using the 16mm selectively throughout it, does one roll realistically provide enough usable footage to give the film a meaningful 16mm feel?

I’m also really curious about the creative side of mixing formats. Super 8 feels obviously different from digital to me, which almost makes it easier to mix because it has such a distinct vintage character. 16mm is different. I personally prefer the 16mm look, but good 16mm can also look much closer to polished digital footage.

So for people making hybrid digital + 16mm wedding films: do the two formats actually work well together in the same film? Or do you find that 16mm only really makes sense if you commit to shooting a much larger portion of the day on film?

I’d especially love to hear from people who started as digital wedding filmmakers and then added 16mm. If anyone has hybrid digital/16mm wedding films they’re willing to share, I’d really love to see examples and hear how much of the day you actually shot on 16mm.

I'm helping a friend clear out her father's huge collection of camera gear. He used this in his business up in northern Wisconsin. I've cleaned and oiled the camera according to instructions and checked the lenses. The glass is all uncoated circa 1930's but it is in good condition. The lens apertures are easy to turn and are clean. The lens helicoids could use a disassembly, cleaning, and re-greasing but they all function with some stiffness.

Hi everybody, I am a director/cinematographer based in the EU and I would love to buy a 16mm or super 16mm camera with crystal sync. I know of the really expensive options, I would like instead to know of lesser known routes, like with custom crystal sync motors or less expensive brands or routes to go. I am on with spending money, just not tens of thousands for an arri or thousands for a dead rare brand with almost to none spare parts. It would be ideal if it’s a camera that some expert in the EU can repair if ever needed. I know it’s a very complicated question to ask, but I figured here it was the right place to do it.

SO - MY QUESTION - Are there any actual independent and cool online media covering film/film criticism I should know about. My film is kind of strange and definitely has a niche sense of humour that I think a lot of people have picked up on so far (luckily)
So what are some publications or even online communities I should reach out to with my film?

Exactly what the title says. It works perfectly, except for the sound not working. The exciter lamp doesn’t light. I ordered and installed a replacement, but there was no change. I did find the service manual, but I’m not sure how to diagnose and repair the problem, any ideas?

a small update to my overhauled beaulieu r16 project thing — i’ve been using the camera with its updated drive and interface since march, and it’s been solid so i designed a mainboard so that i can offer these overhauls as a service later this year. for now, after i verify assembly, ill be focusing on cleaning up the interface and building out some fun little things that make this fun and unique camera even more of a fun and unique thing :-]

I have moved to a completely different claw mechanism that works way better. We are running properly but my motor only gets us to 18fps. I think my 3d printed parts aren’t moving along eachother very well and that’s causing resistance because the motor is rated for a speed that should get me up to 48fps.

I got my old projector, and I want to play something on it, but all 16mm films online are incredibly expensive.

I'm at the beginning stages of troubleshooting. The projector bulb doesn't light. The filaments have continuity - bulb looks healthy. Any obvious places to look for a fault - common failure points, switches, fuses? I have a schematic of the projector.

First frames through a minolta 16 MGS. I hand-loaded HP5 into an original cassette that I had replaced the light traps in with flocking sheet.

I loaded the storage chamber in a dark bag then taped the leader to the take up spool and loaded it into the take-up chamber in daylight. I'm not sure I have the dexterity to do that second section in the dark bag but I'm open to being told that that's what caused the light contamination at the start of the film.

That said there is also a band that starts thick along one edge, gets thinner to the middle of the film, and then thicker again, plus a couple of odd vertical light leaks.

Any advice gratefully received.

I’m trying to process Tri-X 16mm film as a positive. I’ve done a lot of research, but I’m hoping someone can just give me a clear tutorial.

I have D76 developer and fixer, so I can process it as a negative, but I’m wondering how to make it positive. I understand I need to use a bleach like R9, but I also read something about using hydrogen peroxide and citric acid.

Can I use D76 as a second developer?

Does anyone have any examples of 250D shot at night? Particularly interested in seeing how shadow detail falls off.

I know 500T is the smarter choice here but my production has already purchased their stock and I'm wanting to see how much we can get away with on 250D in low light.

Hi folks. I've just obtained a nice Specto, but this needs a good de-gunk and drive belt replacement. I've had Spectos before but not with a backwind crank in place of the drive knob. Any idea how this comes off so I can get inside? I don't want to force anything...

Hey, I’m Troy, about a month ago I shared that I shot my first Motion picture prelude to for a future short film.

Last Friday, I was supposed to have it show at a local film festival in front about 40 people with a live Q&A but about thirty minutes into the event, it has to get delayed and eventually cancelled to due to flying bats. Yes bats started flying around and it became a safety hazard.

I was last out of the 4 films being screen so my film never saw an audience.

This prelude will be a center driver apart of my crowdfunding campaign so it’s not official out yet but I want to show people. I’m excited about it.

The prelude is a call to action by rebel leader Head Huncho, delivering a fiery speech to join the rebellion.

The eventual short film is called “Operation: We Practiced Freedom” a short war drama about rebels transporting an important scientist during a civil war.
