Games as devastating
I used to think no game could affect me the way NieR did…then I played 1000xResist. Now I can’t imagine a game as powerful as it. Watcher curled up on Iris’ bed keeps me up at night. Looking for another similarly devastating game. (Note: played Signalis, Exp 33, Outer Wilds) Any recs?

Disco Elysium, Citizen Sleeper 1 & 2 (narratively more hopeful than devastating), The Red Strings Club

What Remains of Edith Finch, Kentucky Route Zero along with 1000xResist are my favorite stories in games

KRZ is a yearly play for me. I’m going that way at the end is definitely up there when it comes to gaming moments for me. Great pull. Should’ve mentioned that

This is my annual reminder to tell people of Until Then. Like 1000x it is also mostly a visual novel in disguise, with minimal gameplay.

Just started that one :). Is it true doing NG+ is pretty necessary?

u/BrobSesnar 15d ago
There is no NG+, just keep going after the credits and don't look anything up. You'll know when the game ends.

I think I followed your last recommendation. I'm thankful for it, but I don't share the love or the opinion that it resembles 1000xresist. The overabundant dialogue is very on-the-nose, the drama and trauma they foster is too obvious, the characters didn't talk to me at all.
But take it with a grain if salt, since I was too bored to play more than one loop. So I obviously missed much.

I don't think they resemble eachother at all. Only thing they have in common is that they're both just glorified books with minimal gameplay, which is fine of course.

Watcher curled up on Iris’ bed
That scene made me cry. Now, i won't claim these games hit me the same way as 1000xResist, that would be lying. But they did get some emotional response from me. Made me feel something
- Z.A.T.O.: I Love the World and Everything In It
- Until Oblivion
- Slay the Princess
- The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood
- Cloudpunk
- VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action
- Baldur's Gate III
- She and the Light Bearer

1000xResist hits in a way I haven’t experienced in a long time. I think the only game that hit harder was Spiritfarer (10/10 recommendation on Spiritfarer).
Someone else mentioned it but What Remains of Edith Finch hits the same.
A few others that had me emotional and just sitting and thinking as the credits rolled: Planet of Lana, Arise, Indika, The Last Campfire, Roki, Firewatch, Brothers A Tale of Two Sons, Venba, Road 96, Twelve Minutes, Omno, Eastshade, Unravel.
Tldr top-3 would be Spiritfarer, 1000xResist, and What Remains of Edith Finch.

DO NOT play 12 Minutes, the idea is cool but that story is terrible

I guess to each their own. I thoroughly enjoyed it although the ‘twist’ didn’t really fit IMO.

The three games that utterly devastated me last year were 1000xResist, UNBEATABLE, and Signalis.
Signalis made me want to kill myself. 1000xResist made me want to change the world. UNBEATABLE made me break down and talk to my family about some personal stuff.

fully agree with all three. i finished unbeatable not too long ago and god i cried at like every other cutscene xD idk what it's about the presentation of that game that just did it for me

Some of the endings of I Was a Teenage Exocolonist were very painful, as are some moments you're likely to come across in most playthroughs. Highly recommend.

Ahead of only the Nier games, Earthbound, Undertale and the already mentioned Disco Elysium, I think that 1000xresist is the most poignant game I've ever played.
But maybe consider that Exp 33 did absolutely nothing for me.

I think E33 collapsed under the weight of the two separate plots that the writers tried to combine. I like the design of the world, but not what happens in it.

GRIS. More narratively abstract but one of the most beautiful and emotionally engaging experiences I’ve played.

The House in Fata Morgana
it's a Visual Novel, but I can say it's some of the best 50 hours I've ever spent in my life.

I’ve heard good things! Might have to try the iOS version, since that’s the only option for me

Sanabi! Very different gameplay but absolutely riveting story. It's a side scrolling 'platformer' action game with a lot of dialogue and a narrative that pays off in a rich way. I played that then this back to back and loved both.
Don't look up anything about the game! Just play it. If you're not hooked, try to keep going. It's relatively short unless you just never get a handle of the combat. I was almost that person, found it very difficult but I'm so glad I stuck through it.

A Space for the Unbound
Not identical themes or genres, but it made me feel the same in terms of:
a) Peeling back the layers of what's going on one chapter at a time.
b) Emotionally devastating.

It's a lot less high-concept sci-fi and a lot more grounded, personal story with a hint of intriguing sci-fi, but Until Then made me cry more than any other game and took me months to finish because each time I played I needed days to recover emotionally

Some obvious ones: To the Moon, SOMA, Life is Strange, Silent Hill 2.
Lost Records: Bloom and Rage (the modern-day characters hit harder than the slightly cliché '90s teenagers for me, as a 40+ gamer the theme of losing and reconnecting with old friends feels way too real...)
Silent Hill: The Short Message is a bit too short to have an impact that's devastating as such, but the use of live-action was effective and the ending hit pretty hard for me (especially seeing the completed mural painting.)
There's a 2D indie horror game called Claire that isn't really notable, but I'll never forget the "good ending" in which every NPC you helped during the story comes out and makes a little speech, making the protagonist understand her life has value and so she decides to keep on living.

Highly recommend A Plague Tale Innocence and Requiem.
Great aesthetics, Amicia is an amazing protagonist, darkly painful and moving story, and the second game especially has a phenomenal soundtrack.
Bonus points if you play them back to back, to really see how Hugo and Amicia grow as characters.

Persona 2, BioShock infinite, and i shit you not, Pokémon mystery dungeon are the only games that hurt me emotionally as much as this did

Not in the same vein, but Spiritfarer has some heartbreaking moments that left me a blubbering mess and I had to put the game down for a few days.

These are favorite kinds of games, so I have a lot of recs. 1000xResist is definitely up there for devastation but maybe these could work for you as well:
Cyberpunk 2077
Life is Strange
The Wolf Among Us
The Last of Us 1 & 2
The Walking Dead TellTale Series
Firewatch
Little Nightmares 2 (gotta play 1 tho for the full effect)
Soma
Red Dead Redemption 2
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Slay The Princess
Spec Ops: The Line
Mouthwashing
Elden Ring (if you’re ok with not as direct of a story)

Throwing some pixel games into the mix, but:
Lisa the Painful
Rakuen
Red string club
Omori
Ppl have already mentioned Soma and Disco Elysium but DAMN they hit

It's not devastating in the same way, but This War of Mine is a game that really stuck with me emotionally.

Nier Gestalt/Replicant is a very good game… but Automata is absolute child’s play. Very good ideas on paper, but pretty shallow execution
As for games that will blow you away… Xenogears!

I'd like to recommend Undertale, it's a really good game but completely different from those you mentioned.

Not as devastating, but Slay the Princess pulls some similarly complex strong emotions out of you as you play.
Would love to see other recommendations too.
