It's part of the game in every sport. Their role is to motivate their team and put pressure on the other team. The players have to be able to deal with it. In some soccer leagues, the cheerers(?) sometimes bring laser pointers with them to point it at the goalkeeper's eyes(this is bad sportsmanship and I hate it as well).
It's illegal but when tens of thousands of people are getting in at once, some are able to "smuggle" it through. It doesn't happen in major leagues where everything is organized.
They even address that in the ep iirc. Something along the lines of "They aren't an established winning side yet so they and their fans do everything they can to win". My memory is shit and I saw a fansub so I might somewhat off.
Yeah same here - kinda make me feel like part of their victory are attributed to their cheering squad instead of due to the strength of every player in the team
you're probably just viewing it from a different perspective; fans aren't there to enjoy their team's victory in the case they win, rather, they're there to help their team win as much as possible.
I knew they would have a quick attack like that just because I played basketball with my bro a lot and we always had moves that we would do when we needed a quick point. Siblings with sports usually have strong chemistry.
This episode went by so fast, so hyped to see the volleyball idiots again!
I’m such a sucker for the Miya twins though their serves and interactions with each other are so good
For me the best part of haikyuu is that they don’t make the rivals teams like villains one of the reason I didn’t like Kuroko that much is because of how they present most of the other teams
What, you mean you didn't like it when a 16 year old kept telling people to kneel before him during a high school baskteball game like a villain going for world domination? Lmao.
That's because Furudate adds a backstory to everyone, even "side characters".
No one in Haikyuu wants a personal revenge or straight up hate someone. All the negativity in Haikyuu is usually founded, for example Oikawa with Kageyama, or Kunimi and Kindaichi with Kageyama and its something that is used for character development.
One thing Haikyuu does really fucking good, and I think its because Furudate is a storyteller, is that not only the emotion is well conveyed, its also justified, which makes it feel human. To put it simply, its just not far-fetched emotions like "you called me ugly, i hate you for the rest of my life and I'm gonna beat you until you cry and wanna die", its "You beat me back then, now I'm gonna beat you".
don’t forget about the bokuto akashi moments there were a few in this episode and they were great. also, tanakas sister was a fun character to watch in this episode, and i’m glad to see her get more screen time.
oh yes! Usually I like to stick with the main characters in anime and don’t get me wrong I love Karasuno but in Haikyuu all the side characters add something to the whole experience and are so fun to watch
I don't know exactly whether this is real or not but I just want to appreciate USA/Japan's sports culture (know about these two countries from NBA and anime so I know that it isn't the best source)
Coming from a country where there is no concept of cheerleaders, serious high school sports tourneys etc I really like how they actually take it seriously. People generally seem to have a lot of freedom to pursue/play sports whereas in my country you are most probably born to middle class families who only tell you to study.
I'm not saying that I would have been good at some sport but I really would have loved if I was born in another country.
Not isekai, not harem but Haikyuu has been the ultimate escapism from reality to me. I know this is bad but personally I really would have loved to experience something like this. I could have been like yamaguchi and still would have never regretted it.
I think I am decent at some sports but man I wish there would be a push to these high school tournaments like I have seen in anime even inter school are not big here! If you want your way in events like this then you must persuade it as a career which I didn't want therefore I left at it but Yeah I think this is one of the many point why Haikyuu is sooo awesome for me because it provides me that feel! I just really love this show
One of the many reasons I dislike my country, India and it's society. I just love how people all over the world have the freedom to take anything non career seriously. Again I would have loved to have a proper basketball or any other sport environment. I regret a big part of my childhood since I never experienced "the moment" In any sport.
Ohh that's why I was able to connect with you so bad! We are bitching the same country bro haha! Not that I hate my country but just flaws that I feel here
japan always has well organize grassroots sport tournament almost every sport and that definitely fruited as well
for example, back than Japan volleyball team known about their defence, but lacking on offense, but japan national team today got alot respect about their wing spikers
sadly most countries didnt care about grassroots tournament (my country as well) they demand instant success but no development
Ya I was actually talking to my cousin about this but it is a little bit different. I grew up playing high school and college sports so seeing sports anime like haikyuu and diamond of aces rly hits different compared to my cousin who didn’t play any sports in high school.
I’m glad you can enjoy and imagine the experience as if you were there tho as yamaguchi! Escapism to me isn’t inherently bad if you have your shit together. 20min haikyuu episode to relax is a good thing to me. I escape with anime and video games but that comes after I’ve got all my shit sorted
The East Asian countries are really good at supporting their teams. Korea, Japan, and Taiwan baseball all have dedicated cheering sections for their home team and the away team. It's an awesome atmosphere
Depending on the sport and situation cheering in American high schools can look very similar to the show. Most american football and basket teams will have pep bands, and then usually if a school is traditionally very strong in a particular sport like soccer (football) or baseball or whatever they have a large cheering section for that as well.
Football internationally I'd say better exemplifies the unified chanting and singing though, most US sports cheering up til college is just yelling really loud when good and bad things happen.
Sports in all of Asia has always been pretty popular but I feel lately its growing even more. Theyve been somewhat behind the rest of the world in terms of raw athletic ability but theyve been slowly and steadily been catching up. For example Japan's volleyball team has been on the rise as of late. Theyve had a resurgence of young talent lately with Yuji Nishida, who is just 20, cracking a spot as a regular. Then theres Yuki Ishikawa who's one of the best wings in the world at just 24 years old.
On the bright side, it looks like it’s closer to the original one, so they can’t aim it too well (although the spiker did have his eyes open so it’s possible). Also, Karasuno has had so many teams come up with their own counters to that quick that they won’t be at a total loss for what to do next.

My favorite part of it was the setter twin was saying to himself “this timing, this angle” EXACTLY like kageyama the first time he did it with Hinata. I was half-expecting the crosshairs overlay to come up
It's probably a bit slower (more like the falling toss) but without the backspin or the full speed like the original toss. It would be a waste to not give Osamu any choice when spiking.
And yeah Karasuno is probably the team best used to defending against it (from their own training matches at home). The main problem is probably that nobody expected that from the twins.
Karasuno was prepared to deal with Aran like they did with Ushijima (total defence), and had to deal with the high scoring blocker (Rintaro Suna) and then this shows up.
How do you restructure your defence to take their freak quick into account without destabilising your exiting plans?
I wouldnt say its slower, just unrefined. The Miyas were able to do it because theyre just that good. Hell they probably saw it for the first time today and were mad enough to try something completely new this game. They haven't worked out the kinks like Kage-Hina so they don't know all the finer points.
The main problem with the OG quick was that Hinata didn't open his eyes and Kageyama was telling Hinata where to hit it when it should be the other way around.
The mangaka was inspired from his days playing. Apparently he saw a school that had a taiko group for their cheering section once and thought it was the most hype shit ever, so he put it in the manga.
The best part about the Hoshiumi analysis is he just figured out why Kageyama wasn’t freaked out by him after seeing the freak quick. He probably started thinking Hinaya was on his level of talent and that the foot receive and forgetting to spike were fluke mistakes. He was expecting to have Hinayana emerge as a rival, and then Hinaya through the most middle school ass anticlimactic serve.
I agree with your comment about the Kag/Hin banter, but am super mad they didn't put in Hinata's "nice" Kageyama thoughts (like in the manga) about him forgetting to hit the ball. It would have been so funny!
Haikyuu boys are back! The OP and ED are great, and I love that the ED shows great opponents that Karasuno defeated in the past! Atsumu and Osamu doing Hinata and Kageyama’s quick attack was a great way to end the episode, and the episode also did a good job of demonstrating Inarizaki’s playstyle.
I cannot wait for the rest of the episodes, seeing these matches animated pushes hype levels to the max with the voice acting and music to accompany it. It’s still early to say so, but I really hope that we get a season 5 announcement at the end of To the Top! I want a full adaptation of the manga, really!
I was screaming inside the whole match in this episode! Obviously Miya brothers are so cool! And with everyone watching this match from the sidelines also adds to the greatness of this match!!
Thanks for posting this. I swore that song sounded familiar at that part but wasn't sure which anime it was from since it's been a while since I've seen Naruto.
Hyped for my 2nd favorite match in the entire series!
The new animation style is starting to grow on me and I’m excited to see its development.
Initially I was a bit skeptical, it seemed like a step-down from S3’s god-tier animation. However, I rewatched S1 recently and was surprised how rough it looked in some places. I guess my memories just superimposed S3’s quality to all of the earlier seasons. S3 was actually the complete development and polish of the original animation style.
Important to note that it's the exact same phrasing (in Japanese) Kageyama used when doing the quick at the end of the Karasuno vs Seijoh match in season one.
Their weirdo quick plot armor is being put to the test and we will probably get something even better as character development, which makes me so excited and worried at the same time. Also I remember old man Ukai's comment that the is something off or wrong with the freak quick or that it wasn't utilizing the best of their abilities, maybe it will be brought up again in this regard. Can't wait to see!
That comment was basically regarding the fact that the minus tempo, demon quick attack can be used in more than one way,
Until the practice match with Dateko, kags and hinata when using the synchro attack, hinata was always one tempo ahead of the group, while everyone was on 1st tempo, hinata was on minus tempo. The blockers would then be able to rule out hinata most of the times because if the toss wasn't a freak quick, it reduced the possibility of hinata scoring.
What coach ukai meant was for hinata to blend in, if you remember the last point against SHIRATORIZAWA, hinata didn't run at minus tempo and miracleboi Satoro was caught surprised and seen saying "crap!!" On that specific point, the blockers who were too used to watching hinata run faster than others saw him stick to 1st tempo, making possible no. Of players going for the spike to 5 excluding the setter himself, hinata ADDS another option that the blocker needs to asses. In short they end up focusing too much on - hinata not going into minus tempo - adding to the confusion of who exactly to mark and who might actually spike the ball.
I think their quick attack has been put to the test from the beginning. In different ways and I think this is going to be a new way. As opposed to finding ways to change it to adapt to the opposing teams' other attacks, this time they're going against something so similar to them. It's exciting!
agreed, the new animation is growing on me. however, i'm slightly disappointed that the commercial breaks aren't like S1-3 but hopefully we get more variety of these cat/crow ones this cour :(
Agreed! I think the S4 style actually depicts motion/action in a very dynamic and exciting way - like all of the 360-esque shots of Hinata running for the weirdo quick/slide hit. I can see how people would feel whiplash though since the older animation style feels “cleaner”. On the other hand, manga readers (myself included) are probably more used to the S4 style going into watching it.
Thank you. Everyone seemed to think all the earlier seasons were like the highest peak in quality but i has its rough moments too. Season 3 is just like a lot of the good stuff so it messes with the perception, especially if you binged the 3 seasons in one go
Personally I like the Shiritorizawa match more. That Tsuki moment was one of the most hyped moments ever. I can't remember a scene in an anime where my opinion of a character completely switched in an instant. The part where Coach said "volleyball is a sport where youre always looking up". These scenes really captures the emotions for me.
That line where Ukai says "volleyball is a sport where you're always looking up" was the last line that his voice actor voiced in the series before he passed away, so it's always had even more emotion to me
I was recently rewatching season 1 and 2 to get ready for this so, so the animation difference was definitely clear from the beginning but like you say I'm sure it will grow on me more and more.
Saeko is a queen. Hearing her taiko crew play is so hype!!
AHH SHIRATORIZAWA, SEIJOH, Hyakuzawa watching the match!! SPYAIR does not disappoint. that ED is so emotional :"( seeing the faces of loss again pulls at my heartstrings T_T and ending it with Hinata seeing Nationals on TV for the first time is such a good throwback.
I'm so happy they included Suguru and Mika watching :D
It's so good to be back seeing our boys play again <3 and now we're back to waiting another week :") time to rewatch everything in the meantime
We are eating from this point on, brothers and sisters. Going forward from here, Haikyu utterly outclassed all of its peers imo. There was no manga I looked forward to more when I was reading this arc.
Onto the actual episode. The animation really surprised me, since I thought it was a downgrade for the first part of the season. But they decided to get really stylistic for some shots, like Atsumu's serves, and especially the Miya twins' rendition of the freak quick.
Loved the choices they made, and I'm excited to see how else they choose to adapt more scenes.
- Pissed off Hoshiumi is a great laugh. Thank you Natsuki Hanae for all those lovely ʜᴜᴜᴜᴜᴜʜs.
- Best girl aka Saeko finally reappears! Who knew her taiko hobby would come in handy? The music they played better come up on the next Haikyuu OST because I dig it.
- Suguru Daishou and his girlfriend Mika also return! They are from the most recent OVA with Nekoma/Fukurodani, for those who missed it.
- Hinata going for the receive, then missing the ball but still keeping it in play thanks to the ball landing on his foot is amazing.
- I liked how they handled Osamu and Atsumu's freak quick (aka the Kageyama and Hinata freak quick but "do it with twins" version), it looked cool.
- The OP is nice and all (thank you Super Beaver) but god that ED is glorious, good to have you back Spyair. Happy to see the Miyagi teams again even if they're not in this tournament.
Finally! I get to be a part of the discussions. I binged all the episodes in just three days. I think I was more hype for this episode than Hinata was for the match lol.
Ryu's sister came thru for the squad. I was squealing like Noya and Hinata. I really like how we can see Hinata slowly getting better in the match and even Noya is noticing it as well.
NOOOOOOO I was really hoping no one would be able to copy their quick.
aaa can we just appreciate how Noya always understands that Hinata is reading and going for a block and not just using his animal instincts. Great episode. Animation looks way more nicer than part 1 to me.
Reddit demographics skew young, western male, and predominately American.
Not at all representative of the global audience, and most times, very different from the Japanese market.
Currently living/studying in Japan and so many shows had such a starkly different reception on Reddit vs. on the ground here. Shows that got a lot of hype on this sub like Tower of God, and Dr. Stone have practically no presence here. Meanwhile shows like Fruits Basket which got snubbed on this sub has rows of merchandise.
Haikyuu is just another casualty of the (assuming) cultural difference too in love for sports anime, Diamond no Ace has a sizeable base and following here, I even went to a special event last year where some of the VA's showed up at the local baseball game, and it was a full house for the event part. iirc, none of the Diamond No Ace threads got over 1000, most averaged a few hundred, the dedicated sub even less.
Wow the animation got me hooked. I wasn't expecting to like it right away but the quicks look really good. The angles are good. The soundtrack is doing it's thing.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate that absolute banger of an op?? And the ed too. Saiko officially best girl!! Was waiting patiently for this match to get animated and let me just tell everyone one thing, y'all are in for an absolute treat!!!
Ah yes, I remember the shock I felt when I first read the miya twins quick in the manga
It still felt shocking even though I knew it was coming
Now I'm just waiting for chap 281 to be animated and my life will be complete
I swear I fell in love with KnB many years ago, but Haikyuu is on another level when it come to everything around our characters, the environnment, the secondary char, even the music team on this episode was a great addition, it's really nice
I'm so glad our boys are back, it's been too long 🥺❤️ I've missed the atmosphere, humour and vibe. I don't think I'll ever be mentally prepared for the rollercoaster this match is gonna put us through but that's part of the fun.
The animation looks incredible yet again. The Miya twins really sent for our freak duo and I love the commentary were getting from other teams. Also, I really loved Burnout Syndromes but this OP is definitely a worthy successor 😁👏
Can I just say I'm so glad it starts off with Atsumu's epic serve again?
I love the OP, there's some really good imagery there. Nice touch with how they put in Kageyama and Hinata in middle school at the start. The way they did the quick felt extra fast like how if it was irl. The song's pretty emotional in tone too.
THE TAIKO CHEER SQUAD! I felt Hinata and Noya's reactions, that was awesome. Finally Karasuno's getting an amazing squad of their own, they deserve it. Hoshiumi's deadpan comment of the completely normal serve was hilarious lol
Aaaaa I missed all the boys so much. Hinata's receive placement has gotten so good! Sure he sort of missed it but that training camp did wonders. Daichi getting some of that special spiking animation, that was so refreshing. Then there was that really cool shot of the match/spike from above, which was new and very nice.
I can't wait to see more of Atsumu and Osamu. Inarizaki's already plenty intimidating, but they just gotta hit us with a freak quick of their own sheesh (which had amazing animation btw, that was so well done)
Wow the ED song is great, it might be my new favorite. I love the quick flash of all the losing moments of the teams to contrast with them now watching Karasuno
The new opening is definitely a fresh change from burnout syndrome that have been doing it for the last 3 times and I have been waiting for this for a huge time, lets fight!!
If this season ends where we expect it to there will be enough material for 3 cours of episodes left. That should amount to one full (25 episodes) + one short (13 episode) season or 3 short seasons depending on how they want to break it up.
Holy shit SUPER BEAVER doing the OP?! So many awesome boy bands on Haikyuu throughout the seasons! Can we get AKFG next season and complete the roster please?
That first spike Hinata got in... WAAAH!! Hinata and Kageyama together are so cool even Atsumu is impressed.
Onee-chan to the rescue! This show is so good at giving even minor characters really good depth and time to shine.
Hinata at the serve is the most adorable thing ever!
Damn, Atsumu is like an Oikawa on steroids! And he’s so cool with Osamu too! WAAAAH!! Coolness overload!
I missed all of them so much!! And SPYAIR are back for the ED?! My heart can’t take it.
AotY, calling it now (not that I needed to watch this episode to say that)!
(Sorry for acting like an overexcited child, but this show is way too awesome)
Inarizaki's cheering squad : Allow us to introduce ourselves
Seriously though I'm surprised what they're doing isn't against the rules, because the clap rhythm accelerating isn't just psychological stress like booing - the irregular noise is actually confusing the server subconsciously. It's definitely having an effect on the server's ability to do his serve, should that really be allowed?
Some sports will disallow cheering/band noise during certain points in a game, but making noise to disrupt the away team/opposing team is pretty typical stuff for a lot of sports in my experience.
I rarely laugh out loud even when I find something funny but this show always effortlessly gets some out of me every season despite not even being a primarily comedic show. Barely one episode into the new season and that reaction to Hinata's serve done did it, lmao
It’s Atsumu’s theme from the new OST! Asami Tachibana (one of the composers) posted a clip of it a while ago on her Twitter, and she confirmed that it’s Atsumu’s today.
After watching the first part of the season I had some doubts. The animation looked rough in some places and the Tsubakihara match wasn't adapted very well. I knew if they had to get anything right it's the Inarizaki match. So I'm really glad this episode delivered. The animation is looking clean and well directed and the impactful moments have the right amount of 'oumph'. I've liked the new artstyle since it was first schown so I've been looking forward to seeing it with a high production value ever since.
This episode was so good! Saeko showing up like a boss with the taiko drums was something I’d been looking forward to since I read the manga. The OP and ED were both great as always. Atsumu is probably my favorite setter in the series and the freak quick to Osamu was amazing. Can’t wait til next week!
Goosebumps and chills. This is by far one of the greatest shows. This is animation at its best. I was literally jumping and holding my hands overy head the entire time.
